Hi,

I bought 6x"MSI GTX 1070 Gaming X Twin Frozr VI OC 8GB GDDR5". I want to know what PSU is required if I want to mod the bios for higher hashrate regardless of other hardware? Only GPU.
Is 1000-1200w ok only for GPUs?

1070 cards have a 150 watts TDP , so for 6 cards + your system need min 150wx6= 900 watts + around 100 watts for ur cpu/mobo/hdd/mem , so your total system draw going to be around 1000 watts , if you know how to overclock and the same time undervolt your cards you will be ok with 1200 watts psu . I would not use 1000watts psu for ur setup...
Building mining rig to about 80-85 percent of a PSU's capacity is advisable to achieve maximum efficiency and stability .

If he runs at 60% TDP he won't be using more than 800w, so a PSU 1000w would be fine.

Also with oc and modded bios

There is no BIOS mod for NVIDIA.

yeah a 1200 will do it, either supernova or corsair 1200 platinum are good, but you can also try to buy 1 rm1000i, will do good if you lower the tdp to 80%, and it's less expensive than the other 1200watt psu

Thanks for sharing knowledge  Wink
But why only platinum? Gold is not ok? Or gold 1300w?

I have 2 options only:
1- GREEN GP1450B-OC+ Overclocking Evo 80Plus Platinum PSU (lower price)
2- Cooler Master V1200 Platinum (high price)

I was told GREEN PSUs are not good at high voltage usages, is that right?

Platinum or Titanium PSU's can handle a high load more efficiently than gold PSU's. If you are going to run more than 80% of the rated power, I would only go with a platinum or better PSU from a good brand like EVGA or Corsair. Platinum PSU's run cooler and the higher efficiency will also save you money in the long run.

If you mine ZEC, 1200W is enough.

I'm buying up all the 1700w psu in the EU, they are so freaking rare even a used one with a platinum rating goes for over 300 euros.

Lepa has a platinum rated 1700w psu, they are rock solid but rare and mostly used. Enermax Platimax 1700w is new but the wait is 2-5 weeks, haven't received that one yet. It will be powering my 7 gpu rig most likely.

Some GTX 1070 cards have as high as a 180 watt TDP.

(edit) if that's the MSI 1070 model with an 8-pin AND a 6-pin the TDP appears to be 230 watts, per discussion in another thread.

I'd recommend going with a good-quality 1200 Watt or higher - EVGA G2 1300 or Seasonic X-1250 gold would both be good choices.

Platinum and Titanium are more efficient, but the MUCH higher cost tends to take too long to pay off unless your electric cost is VERY high (and in that case you're probably not going to be very profitable in any case).

Stick with 1200W power supply, preferably Corsair/EVGA (good price/performance ratio). It isnt a good idea to run at almost maximum load PSU especially for 24/7 operation.

I like the 1700w psu because I can run 7 cards now and maybe more in the future. PSU can last more than a decade if they're good, worthwhile investments.

With the EVGA 1300W you might run into the issue that you have only 2 x 8+8(6+2) and 4 x 8 connector, some 1070 GPU's need 6+8 connected to power on so you would need at least 4 additional 8+8(6+2) cables that you can connect 6 1070 cards with 6+8 plugs.
using Molex / SATA to 6 or 8 pin connectors might cause a lack in Molex / SATA connectors for the PCIe Riser Cards (where you need 6 of them too).

The Cooler Master v1200 Platinum has 12 x 6+2 Connectors so it's possible to connect 6 x 1070 GPU's with 8+6 using all 12 connectors you have.

Not even my Gigawatt GTX 1080 models with the 180 watt TDP need 2 connectors - and since the PCI-E spec states 75 watts from the bus + 150 watts from a 8-pin connector, I'd really like to know why anyone would put 2 connectors on ANY GTX 1070. That would be a 50% increase over the "base" TDP the GTX 1070 was designed for after all.

GTX 1080 I could see it for a card with a very high factory overclock perhaps (but I've not SEEN such a card to date), and the base GTX 1080ti needs 2.

The cabling on the EVGA G2 1300 is heavy-duty enough you could pick up an extra cable set and use dual-connector cables in all 6 of the "VGA" ports on the PS safely.
I don't know offhand if Seasonic sells extra cables, but EVGA has them listed on their website or forums somewhere (but they only sell "complete" cable sets, not individual cables).
