it is not a question of IF it is a question of when people realize Ethereum is not the best option for smart contracts out there. and it doesn't have to fail as in fall to zero for them to realize this. it is all about efficiency, how well it is performed and how cheap or expensive the whole process is both in money and time that it takes.

right now there is RSK (Rootstock) which will work on bitcoin blockchain (the most trusted and secure and well known blockchain) and it will be practically free to make a smart contract using it.

I agree with you 100%. There are good projects over the eth platform, I'm suspect to say because I put some stake in SONM, but I think they can migrate platforms, since ETH is just one aspect of their project. Would probably be a pain migrating the tokens, and they need to do it because their tokens have actual functions, but it is doable. The eth platform there is to verify and transact the fog computation, which is the "creme" of the whole thing.

I wonder how many other platforms launching on ETH in these recent ICOs could also do the same. Bancor comes to mind (not judging quality of their project, just saying the a mere market former can be run elsewhere).

So You think Rootstock could host them? Never heard of it before.

But what prevents BTC itself to accommodate smart contracts at some point in the future (lay person question here)?

don't worry, there are so many altcoins, and so many people are waiting to see ETH dying.

If etherium dies many altcoins will be affected for those who is under on his side. I hope it will continue living like a bitcoin.

very mean mate hahaha, but its true there's a lots of members around here who still doesn't believe that eth will grow big in the future still waiting for the value to really dump hard, i think if ever eth fall down there's still some imitation coming from the numbers of alts that has been develop from day to day can't say what would be the fittest one.

NEM might have a chance since there is a bunch of Altcoins that like to have the contract thing with their coins. If Ethereum dies then there would be a bunch of coins going down since there's many coins using ETH to help improve their technology. Ethereum won't be better than Bitcoin though.

If there will be an efficient platform for smart-contracts, maybe it will not even use blockchain, which despite being the best technology for the digital gold, so far this has not proved to be the best way for projects that require much higher scalability properties, such as Ethereum.

I agree but it is actually true, I think a lot are waiting for Ethereum to die. If it does then those weak hands will be transferring and buying another new altcoin and others would take advantage and buy them when the price dumps.

if you are a prophet, I am happy to see its death.

But, if ETH die, the profit is ETC rather than BTC.

RSK is not a threat to Ethereum in any shape or form. It is a centralized sidechain and therefore has distinct disadvantages.
Ethereum isn't the best smart contract solution, but Bitcoin isn't the best coin either. There are many better coins out there, but that doesn't mean they are a threat to Bitcoin. That's the case with Ethereum as well.
Due to their huge market cap (a perk of being first) they will both thrive, and neither will die.

If Ethereum dies, will people still trust smart contracts?
This would be the main thing when ETH would die or either dump.People will surely lost its trust smart contracts which means all coins under this will surely be affected. There are really people who do love to see ETH die on the soonest. As been said above if it would die then there are lots of promising alts do exist on the market and i bet you, you cant choose all of them  Grin

So You think Rootstock could host them? Never heard of it before.

But what prevents BTC itself to accommodate smart contracts at some point in the future (lay person question here)?
it is pretty new. it just recently raised $1 million. and it is supposed to bring smart contracts to bitcoin utilizing the side chains. so it will be instant transactions and very cheap ones at that. to find out more about it please visit their official website: http://www.rsk.co/

Pusuer. ...how is RSK going?
Does Rootstock mean that btc can do anything ETH can?
eventually yes. that is the final goal. there will be a lot of challenges along the way but it seems like a pretty good project to me. here is another link: https://medium.com/@CryptoIQ.ca/rootstock-smart-contracts-on-the-bitcoin-blockchain-e52b065421a8

It is a centralized sidechain and therefore has distinct disadvantages.
I don't see anything centralized about it!
