I'm staying away from home for a month or so and have left the mining rig at home. No more noise!

I have setup remote desktop so that I can manage the computer but on both occasions I have started either Geth or Mist I lose connection with the remote computer, never to regain. I have given it enough time to resynchronise but I still cannot connect to it.

After I jump in the car and go to see whats going on I find the computer doing its thing, as expected. I have to close Geth/Mist (restart computer for good measure, I don't wanted a repeated trip) before I can connect again.

Has anybody else experienced this? Is there a cause and workaround for this problem? Is it Geth/Mist or just a coincidence?

Thanks for any help.

Well i don't use the same apps as you.

But you can use Teamviewer like me and it works like a charm to remote control my rig, unless Internet goes down.  Grin

Looking to have remote access to my rig as well.  Any cost for Teamviewer?  Just checked out the site really quick and can see it has what I'm looking for...windows support as well as android.

Can you specify what remote desktop you're using?

Thinking about it, the only possible problem is either your remote desktop service bugging out, or your internet connection cut off of a few minutes. We need to know what service your using. What I personally use though, is TeamViewer and Google Remote Desktop. Never had problem with either. Try them out:
https://www.teamviewer.com/en/
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/chrome-remote-desktop/gbchcmhmhahfdphkhkmpfmihenigjmpp?hl=en   (chrome plugin)

Remote desktop?
I started learning it in my work today.
We are using remote desktop , but sometimes it goes slow.
Whenever the connection goes slow or goes out we have alternative.
We also use Teamviewer , its also useful and effective.
Its easier to use than remote desktop, for me.

Teamviewer is also my choice. I used to be a fan of Ultr@VNC but making it work through some networks is difficult, Teamviewer is very effective even from my secure work network.

I dont use the same software but there is an app that is good and user friendly that is one tap connect. I believe its has now some android application right now in google play store the of the app is team viewer all you need is to create an account save the created login credentials cause later you'll be needing it if you try to remote control your computer. Just go to website and pick what ever version you like, there are two versions the paid and the free version. Nonetheless if you dont like it you can google for some remote control apps in the web.

Have you tried PcAnyware - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PcAnywhere < pcAnywhere was a suite of computer programs by Symantec which allows a user of the pcAnywhere remote program on a computer to connect to a personal computer running the pcAnywhere host if both are connected to interconnected networks and the password is known. > Windows, Mac OS, Linux

It was discontinued, but I know some people are still using it and was replaced with https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bomgar  < All session data is guarded by SSL encryption and support sessions are recorded. Bomgar has a Federal Information Processing Standard 140-2 Level 2 Certified appliance to meet government standards for security sensitive enterprises. >

https://www.bomgar.com/

Hope this is helpful. ^smile^

You can have for free as long when you install selecting the option for "particular use" which indeed its the true.

Thank you for all the replies. Teamviewer certainly gets a lot of mentions!

I'm not discounting using Teamviewer or any other piece of third-party software but given Remote Desktop and the RDP is built into Windows I thought I'd give it a go. I don't know what happened the first time I lost connection because after a restart it worked again but after the second occasion I realised that my public IP was changing so I didn't have the correct address to login with. If I stop that from happening then RDP will be all I need. I have a few questions about accessing RDP through a VPN but i'll start a new topic for that.

Look into a free dyndns service/client to run.    It will give you a fixed subdomain to use and will resolve the changing IP issue.

Teamviewer is really good you can just install it and use it into your computer desktop, but I don't think that it can also use in android.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.teamviewer.teamviewer.market.mobile

It also supports iOS, but obviously, you can't control it remotely from other devices.

With teamviewer you can even do the opposite, control your android phone/tablet from a computer, sometimes it's useful.

:-) Its been a few days since I logged and since I last read this thread I have started to use Teamviewer.

My ISP updated the firmware of my router which disabled/removed DDNS. So I gave Teamviewer a try. Its great! It just works, no account required and its free! I have even started to use it using my Android phone. It's often said if things sound too good to be true then they usually are. Teamviewer is an exception, as I was told many times.

With teamviewer you can even do the opposite, control your android phone/tablet from a computer, sometimes it's useful.
I didn't know this. It now means I can play eXtreme gammon for free on the PC :-)

Thanks for the help guys, and for anyone reading this post because they are wriggling around with IP addresses, DDNS and Windows Remote Desktop just save yourself a few hours and install Teamviewer!
