We can see a lot of Newbies that had been creating topics to ask questions which are asked a hundred or thousand times already and again we answer them and sometimes we include links that will help them like those that are pinned (stickied). Here are some examples of the common questions that are asked: How does forum ranks work and activity count?, Posting Guidelines and alike. Aren't you wondering why newbies are posting these which in fact the answers are already given? Maybe they are too lazy to read or search (I also think this at first) or they just didn't simply noticed it? Either way, I came up with a suggestion so here it goes:

I suggests to make a redirect thread displayed in the home page of the forum where all the compilations regarding the things that a newbies should know before posting. It will be titled like this: Newbies - Read before posting. This is filed in the home page together with the boards/sections but instead of opening a board it would a redirection to a topic instead. In the left side of the entitled page there is an icon (a redirect arrow) like this:

Why make this?

  • Newbies would stop or lessen (if not stopped) asking questions that are already answered and given hundred times.
  • Newbies will have a better understanding how the forum works (i.e. ranks, activity count, post count, etc).
  • Will make the forum much neater in a sense where the topics who are posted over and over again would somehow lessen if not abosolutely stop (with regards only in newbies' questions and alike).
  • and other more that I missed to mention with regards to the topic.

This should include all the necessary things to know. Maybe we can also make another separate redirect link regarding Forum Rules?

Here's the forum that made me come up an idea to also implement a feature like this here: Primedice Forum. I see no wrong adopting features like what they have in their forum but we need to ask for their permission first since it is theirs' and if it is fine for them then that would be great! Honestly, we need to upgrade this forum which will make it much greater like what it is and what it should be.

What do you guys think? Is it a good suggestion or not? Share your thoughts below regarding this!  Grin

Newbies won't read it or they're too stupid to understand. People here are so lazy and greedy and eager to start shitposting they wont bother to search for answers or figure it out so they'll just create a thread for it which helps them rank up in the process.

Well that's sad but actually some don't just notice it or maybe your rightt that they are just a bunch of lazy people. But isn't it a great idea that atleast will make them more aware or we can jusy do the forum rules part. It would be good if it is included in theymos' chat section that he is saying he will make.

This.

I disagree. Almost all of them just do not want to read anything before making a post/thread. It's isn't even about the lack of resources or that finding those resources is hard. It's quite trivial.

Theymos could add a "Have you read X, Y, Z?" *test*. However, I'm sure that regardless of how easy the test was, someone would post (or even sell) the answers to it somewhere.

Well somehow we can try it since in the Primedice Forum (sorry if I am comparing this forum to PD forum) the members had not asked anything regarding ranks or anything (or I think maybe just once that is before they add a redirect regarding ranks and etc). Maybe they don't just really care since what they want is to gain bits only but nonetheless it is effective in there so I think it might be effetive here?

I see. *disappointed

I doubt about the test part since like you said they can just leak the answers or they can view the thread that the question is referring then they can just forget it making it useless since they don't really care at all? But nonetheless if they somehow force them to read it then they will just remember it like a stock knowledge then that would be good. How about while taking the test, it will unable any screenshot/print screen, copy, though they can do it manually but it can somehow be countered by a timer but still not that effective. It has its holes and need to cover those all up.

We need to come up a way to make them read it like mandatory though I don't how it will go so the best thing is to make it very obviously available to them like really right in front of their eyes (in the home page)... And make these newbies somehow to read it before posting? Well we can somehow modify it to make it more effective?

Warning then temp ban for all threads that can be answered with stickies. That'll teach them to read it.
I have an inkling that some of the newbies asking these threads are merely there to boost the post count of other members.

That's a bit harsh. How about having an opening message when they entered forum with a warning to read the following thread that if they somehow asked it then they will be temp ban that is with some sort of red words to make it scarier.

Never in my mind that I ever think of it ever since I was a newbie so I never give a thought much about this. That makes me sick!

I suspect a number of the posts are newbies trying to increase their post counts without having to enter into Bitcoin discussions.

Well, you can't really compare that forum to this one. They are quite different communities.

But nonetheless if they somehow force them to read it then they will just remember it like a stock knowledge then that would be good.
The problem is that the user is reluctant to read/learn. Forcing them to do stuff is much easier said than done. For example, I think that removing the newbie jail was a mistake.

No. I'm not comparing their forum itself and this forum itself. I'm talking about the features and this forum also needs that kind of great features which a great bitcointalk.org forum deserves.

Well anyways, I am looking forward to a much better version of the forum in the future and I hope it will happen soon.

Okay, fair point. Well, this forum is severely flawed in many aspects/policies.

It's been happening "soon" since the 2015 release. Roll Eyes
