According to NIST and ECRYPT II, the cryptographic algorithms used in
Bitcoin are expected to be strong until at least 2030. (After that, it
will not be too difficult to transition to different algorithms.)

The hacked has stolen through the vulnerable of the multisig wallet. The white hacked already secured over 140 million dollars (ethereum amount + asset). These 3 project of the icos getting hacked by the hacked such as Vslice, Swarm, and I can't remember the last project that has drained by the hacked. The parity developer already took the action to make a patch for the multisign wallet.

Heard about it this morning. I assumed that this was the catalyst for the price drop. I wonder if the news has been priced in yet, or will ETH dip some more

Thank god for the whitehap hackers that preserved all the other multisig parity funds. Really though people need to test their code better, now my swarm city tokens have lost their development funds and the price has crashed.
Its not the end though ethereum will recover as it always has, and so will the ERC20 projects if the devs are really serious about them.

Yeah it will recover but at what rate? In my opinion it won't be the same in terms of growing capability now that there has been a security breach like this

Never ever use third party wallet, if the dev don't have the ability to code a decent safety wallet then the coin shouldn't worth anything.

Hopefully this incident won't effect the Ethereum's price. Ethereum's moved up really good yesterday and I can see the price has dropped a little but now looks like getting back very well. Hope won't drop more and keep increase.

That is not an excuse for the incompetence of their developers. If it is really still an early stage project in their eyes then they should not allow this project to be in the market especially right after the DAO hack. This should stay in testnet mode only.

So it looks like Parity.io were using buggy code is the problem in this case, not Ethereum?
The platforms being developed upon ETH have so many moving parts they're highly vulnerable to exploits.

How the tezos guys have it covered? U mean Tezos is not hackable? Can you point out how it is safe since Tezos is also a crypto and may also be hacked in its initial days I can first dog on Tezos, they have spent so much time on making their platform secure that its very difficult to work with. The idea is that their smart contract language will be 'formally verifiable'. Sadly that seems to translate to much more difficult to use for the novice programmer to work with. Also their protocol is written in OCaml which isn't widely used either. If there were a spectrum of Security <----> ease of Use, I'd say the Tezos team put all their eggs in the basket of being a very secure platform bordering on extremely difficult to implement things on top of. After working on the project since 2014, they have arrived at something that is incredibly secure but they don't yet even have a wallet or blockchain explorer. I suppose they are putting the heavy investment on making the platform bulletproof first. I don't know if this will be a good approach or not but I can save given their focus that it will at least be much more secure. I think this put them way behind the 8-ball timeframe wise and I also think folks will continue to gravitate to Ether until the security flaws in Ether prove to be too much. (if that ever happens)

Hmm interesting point. I wouldn't say that hackers are more brilliant just that it's easier to break into something than it is to secure it. A security developer can try to safeguard against ever possible attack they can think of but a hacker only needs to find one vulnerability. I had a grad class recently where the final project was find all the ways to 'hack' or break an incredibly simple program and it's astonishing how many vulnerabilities the entire class was able to find. There are just so many layers of abstraction that are at risk. In a way computer code is written on a pyramid and the higher level you go the more holes there can be at each layer. I suppose this is partially why bitcoin was created with a near bullet proof low level implementation. (and as I said above, why Tezos spent three years building an incredibly secure base layer)

The error was super basic and a big miss from the development part. The real problem is the lack of thorough code reviews. There seems to be some confidence that if it comes from the core devs then it is gold standard. More experienced eyes need to be actively reviewing all these new enhancements. There should also be a bounty program for all these big developments.

A modifier should have been added to the public initializer method to ensure the contract is not already owned. It pretty much allowed the hacker to run a quick new initializing call and change the owner...

Oh no of course not, but I wish a site like coinmarketcap would add one more column of 'unique code' (though that would probably be very difficult to implement) From perusing the community for years you have Bitcoin clones, Ether 'built on top ofs', NXT, Ripple, Ant, Waves and more recently Tezos. Fill me in, what's left of completely new code bases? I spend a lot of time looking at code, give me some new code to look at...

Wrong, myetherwallet still not safe when they not have 2FA for security wallet, example hacker attack your PC and know your private key, they can withdraw your coin anytime on myetherwallet. I had mail to devs myether about this issue but still not have reply Iirc they started implementing 2FA a week or two ago. Let's pray.

I am not impressed at all about these ETH wallets, already I got over 1 btc worth of ETH and erc20 tokens stolen a few weeks ago through one of the myetherwallet phishing sites. ETH hackers are running rife ll over the slack rooms and now we have the Parity wallets compromised on a massive scale. I am wondering what next?

Not a chance, there is too little a proportion of the total ETH that got stolen. The value is obviously high but that's because ETH has taken off in value since the DAO hack.

I doubt that other Wallets are much safer. There was a big hackernews thread on how shitty solidity is, so maybe someone took a deeper look.

Ethereum is second largest crypto currency according to coinmarketcap.com and widely used for almost every upcoming and ongoing ICO transactions and last few days there are a lots of news coming of hacking like coindash robbed for almost $7m value of ether and now more news coming. Now what will the next step of cryptocurrency investors to save their hard earned money. If high quality wallets are not safe then how this market will survive. This market is in growing stage yet but people are losing big amounts and with that fear remain always there in minds whether to participate or not.I think now crypto currency world community needs to think about lots of aspects like scanning of coin projects etc. This market can only survive if every coin/project/wallet take high security measures to protect themselves as well as investors and indeed this new but big market.

My goodness! It seems hackers are much more brilliant and more skilled than developers? If this becomes a pattern then perhaps we should really be dead worried. Coindash lost some $7 million dollars just very recently and now this. Damn! I am beginning to be really worried about digital currency, much more brilliant hackers have lots and lots of mouth-watering targets nowadays.
Hah, don't confuse all Crypto currency with hack jobs, there are solid projects out there. Just because ETH is big does not make it any good. It was a scam from day one and you people are surprised it keeps on giving? Grow up and smell the roses and stop being blinded by your greed. Well at least Ether is a real project. You might not see these types of hacks from other 'protocols' but that's because they are just copies of previous protocols. (or they aren't anything at all in which case there's nothing to hack!) Perhaps in the future when you see something was hacked you can think, "shit that must have been a real project with it's own actual development pioneering new things." You think ETH is the only project that is not a bitcoin clone? LOL No wonder you fools keep losing your tokens. Well the most well known one is Monero. If you can follow that code then I tip my hat to you. {I hear it's commented now so maybe not so rough anymore to follow: Idunno} I cant believe since their official wallet miltisig was hacked they didn't lost significantly more market value
Ever hear of "to big to fail"? It seems Eth has reached that status, to many big players in now from the create free fiat crowd. The question is, will we now see a third fork of Ethereum?
Hah that was my thought as well, I wonder what the magic number of DEV tokens stolen is the tipping point for braking mutability again.

Well thank goodness for Tezos! They have this covered...
How the tezos guys have it covered? U mean Tezos is not hackable? Can you point out how it is safe since Tezos is also a crypto and may also be hacked in its initial days Tezos might be a trainwreck waiting to happen. There are valid reasons that its self amending ledger might be exploited by would be hackers of the system. If it happened on Ethereum, it could happen anywhere. To think of it, bitcoin was not safe from hackers during its early days.

There are valid reasons that its self amending ledger might be exploited by would be hackers of the system. If it happened on Ethereum, it could happen anywhere. To think of it, bitcoin was not safe from hackers during its early days. The Bitcoin protocol has never been hacked. (It's relatively simple with extremely minimal functionality) Also Tezos could be a train wreck but they will have spent 4 years drilling on one very important thing when it launches, having the smart contract code be formally verifiable. It's not flashy or sexy, in fact it's boring but it will be much more secure. People have been warning about this issue with Ether for a while now ( certainly prior to the most recent hack): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ItCYzwPkiDYIt was obvious back in 2014 that Ether was likely to suffer hacks that were inherent to the protocol. A group of very smart people saw the writing on the wall then and set out to design an truly secure platform at a much lower level that could be guaranteed secure. Unfortunately, such a undertaking took a really long time! I get it though, man this space is getting so complicated you need a Ph.D. in Computer Science to have any idea what you are talking about... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4oG4Ead74xA

Is this for real or an inside job? $32Million is not a joke, its so huge! Almost less than 10% of the ETH's total market cap. This might affect the market. It can crash or can manipulate a small marketcap coin.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't holding your funds in paper wallets a sure way to protect yourself from hacks like this?
Good question. And the next one is: how safe is MyEtherWallet? I seriously have questions about myetherwallet. If classic ether wallet can be compromised then myetherwallet has a chance too There’s a very high possibility that Myetherwallet could get hacked sometime if the guys that manage that website want to hack the database. I know that many Ethereum wallet owners don’t like to download the whole Blockchain for that coin so they choose to use Myetherwallet instead and they don’t think about changing the password while doing it to secure their money. It’s pretty simple to change a password to secure a wallet, just have to do it.

I have no idea why would this happen to Ethereum after a few had occurred to DAO and a few others. After all, what's the essence of their smart contracts and I'm afraid how the proposed Waves smart contract would be implemented in a way that'd be more secured and impossible to hack or attack.

I wonder why too. Ethereum has been hacked so many times while millions of dollars involved, yet it remain stronger than ever and everyone going crazy for it.
