It is probably harder these days as a few years back. You will leave traces and the more money you made the more motivation for the police to find you. At least in Austria in the last years, the police got more and more people to a cyber unit. The main purpose is to locate those hackers.

I had a lot of security at the university (informatics). There are a lot of ways to cover your tracks. Anyway there are a lot more where you can fuck up.
