If I were you, I would sit on my couch and watch the real-time charts. The market is moving up and down so fast nowadays. Please wait a bit if you want to start with bitcoin.

You just choose to buy Bitcoin or Altcoin, I suggest to buy bitcoin with the money you have.
Bitcoin will slide, after the 1st of August I believe BTC will skyrocket.
Risks always exist, face and overcome fear.

I paused my trading a bit right now. Waiting for what will happen to BTC.
Also exchanges paused their deposits and withdrawals.

It is better you make your own research on where you will put 'your' money.
So you won't have to blame other people when you profit/loss.

I suggest having a portfolio of at least 5-10 good currencies to mitigate risk and average profit.

5 coins would be enough already because if you decide to diversify it on 10 coins i think it wont really be worth it at all unless if you are longing for long term profits then it would do. If i do have $500 in my balance i would diversify it on $100 per coin,it wont be too big but still better than nothing at all. I would Choose up some ETH,DOGE,LTC,Some BTC and  Monero. Yes,its just really small amounts but i would just keep those coins for long term but still it would depend on the opportunities if i do see some profits on a certain price point maybe i can do short trading to maximize profits or let those portfolio to grow somehow if doing good profitable trades.

Dividing your capital into 5 or higher altcoins is also a good idea to minimize risks but in my opinion $500 is already a good amount for short trades. the risk on it will also be minimized as you'll be only waiting for +5, 10, or 20 sats on your bought price. just make sure the coin is in demand-- has a lot of buy and sell orders and huge volume.
ex. $500= .18 btc atm
you bought 180,000 of coin x for 100 sats each so the total will be 18000000 sats (.18)
then wait for the coin to increase 10 sats after that sell it. Your profit will be .018 because 19800000sats minus 18000000 sats
Do that everyday and you'll make decent profit

also use this chart: https://coinmarketcap.com/

You should hold 100$ in fiat, 200$ in bitcoin and invest remaining into ETH, LTC and ETC with whatever proportion you want.

All of this three alts are in correction phase so it can get pumped when bitcoin price will start to get correction after reaching $3k. Talking about bitcoin you should always hold some bitcoin in hand to buy more alts if they get dumped. Similarly holding fiat will give you the opportunity to buy back cheap bitcoins if it experiences huge dump.

If I may be able to suggest then I would suggest that you invest them on new coins or tokens by joining their ICO. And since all investments has risk then your investment on those coins will depends on what happens on their ICO whether it's successful or not but you can easily research stuffs before you invest.
Just as above said, atleast 5-10 coins or token is good to invest on so that whenever some of them gives no profit then there would atleast 2-3 or maybe more would give you nice profit.

Right now, I would advice to just buy bitcoins and nothing else right now.
Because there is a lot of things happening with bitcoins and the possible forks by august 1.
Its really technical, but just buy bitcoins and nothing else until about 1 week after august 1.

You can always visit the altcoin discussion or altcoin announcements to get a hint of what coins are the best to invest and if there are some serious community backing around it. Also, just a serious tip, it's better to put your money little by little into bitcoins since it has some more serious development being done around it and its a large factor for price increase since the overall market sentiment would be positive.

Yeah there's real money in these icos and you can grow that 500$ into a loy mote if you happen to chance upon a rrally good ico. Some icos can give you up to 500% earnings but you have to really watch the charts as more often than not, his would go on for a short time only then become stable at a lower price. Try to start with a smallnportion of your capital to test the waters with the coin you'd trade with.

My first choice would always be Bitcoin, still is the best investment will greate opportunities to make nice profit. But if you want invest in altcoins don't make quick decision. Watch the markets closely, altcoins worth investing are changing all the time. Maybe ETH is one of that coins, for singer period now, and this would be my choice.

I want to advise you to diversify your investment. I usually divide my investing amount into four parts. First part goes in Bitcoin. Bitcoin might not double your amount in short span but holding Bitcoin would be best in long term. Second part goes in any of the top 10 cryptocurrency. Which altcoin to choose will depend upon the latest news and trend. The third part in any coin with less volume but still popular enough. Usually from next 30-40 altcoins. The last part, I invest in ICO which seems to show potential. Most of the time through this strategy I am able to make overall profit. The important point is to know when to sell your coins.

As with all high-return of investments, investing on cryptocurrencies are risky.  And as with all active investments in general, it is wise to never commit more money than you can afford to lose. But for me if you really want on investing or should I say trading on bitcoin or some altcoins make it wise mate don't just focus on one or two only it will end up losing some of your investment, invest on the older cryptocoins also not the new ones, the older coins are better.
