I invested in Presearch.io, they aim to rival Google as a search engine.

It is pretty though to identify ICO's that will be scam or not so to spot one, first look st their public relation skills because most of the time those who lack this becomes scam in the end. Also look at the roadmap of an ICO, and their team because sometimes it determines what is scam and what is not. By doing this, it would lessen the chance of you being scammed by an ICO.

I think it's absolutely crazy the market caps the ICOs are getting and the amount of money people are throwing at them. Not to mention there's a lot of scamcoins out there just to make the founders very rich.

To answer on your question about how to spot of an ICO is a scam or not, read the whitepaper well, try to rationalize the concept and see if you think it will succeed in the future and be valuable, see if the team have given any interviews, participated in podcasts, blockchain events, hackathons, see their github for activity, follow their social media and see if the community is active and supports the project (facebook groups, twitter, telegram chat room, slack chatroom)

One tip in investing in ICO is looking at their product, if a project already has a working or even a beta product that you could test try it and if you find it working well and stable and you think many would be interested in it you could try to invest in it. Also if developers and team members are always active, always give updates and accepts criticism and suggestions then people will trust them more then you could try invest in their project.

If I may advise, wait for SPECTIV to open ICO. You can invest there. I see that the SPECTIV project is a great project.

Most ico provide bonuses. For example if a ico is running for 2 months like dimcoin they provide 20% bonus in first 15 days and then keep reducing to 0%. What you can do is invest on the last day of bonus ending for example if 15% bonus is from aug 1 to aug 15th invest on 14th. If the ico is transparent you can easily recognise weather it's successful or unsuccessful.

I agree with you, I have also tried my best to find a best ICO project to invest and I found the SpectcivVR project because I think the VR will be a very popular market in the near future.

It is getting harder and harder. Whitepapers and other project presentations are getting smoother and more convincing that they would appear legitimate. I am basing on the actual use of the tokens, the practicality of their goals and ideas. If a certain project is too ambitious that they would surely find no way for their project to really materialize, I won't risk.

this is a tough question!
early stages you sometimes may find some bonuses and some amount off what you buy. this can be good as an early investor. but the problem is, early on you don't know what you are dealing with.

and besides until the last days you may not know. the scammers are getting better and better with time. they are more experienced now. they are illusive!

i see someone already mentioned white paper, i also say reading it is good but these days people pay good money for a well written white paper by someone else!!! so it is not as reliable as before either!

No one can tell you when you should invest in ICO. You need to do the research by reading the white paper. You should also look for competitors in the space. Doing research will eliminate most scams, but you can never be really sure. So, you should only invest the amount that you are willing to lose.

No one know how the coin will becomes scam or success, only predict and learn from history price. If you're invest before ICO is just like gambling, but as long you can deal the risk that would be fine. When ICO starting, the price always lower than pre-ICO because maybe there's not have exchanger or investor. But after ICO, there's a chance to get profit with the right price because exchanger, investor already available. You can decides when to buy or sell, remember to manage your money. Good luck.

I think some alt-coin ICO that have bounty campaign here in bitcointalk is a good for investing and for assure you only invest that what can you also afford to lose because we also don't know when that ICO will go to scam!
Some Investor's is also a gambler because they gamble here by investing there money in the alt-coin ICO.

From my experience don't invest during the ICO period, especially not when ethereum or bitcoin is pumping. Just wait after the ICO period when all the people are selling and pick up a few cheap coins.
