I do think that one reason of its volatility is due to the fact that people keep buying bitcoins for the sole purpose of investment and speculate that they will gain or earn huge profits and not use them as a digital currency. These buyers anticipate the future demand of BTC, and as long there is more demand in supplies, they will expect the fact that supply price will increase. However, these kind of buyers are easily affected by events or stories that might turn their decision upside down. Such as when there is a sudden crash of BTC price, instead of holding the coin, they will immediately sell them which is one of the main reason why BTC price increase or decrease gradually. If people will only use Bitcoins not as a digital commodity or asset, but for practical purposes, then there will be a stable price which might eliminate BTC's volatility characteristic.
