Hello everyone, sorry for my ignorance as I am new to this. I have purchased 8 of the new D3's and I was wondering what I need to do to have these prepared? I plan on buying the power supplies for each one straight from bitmain so I will have 8 of those as well. I plan on running these in my spare bedroom at home. I know I will have at least 4 of them at my home, and possibly the other 4 at another location. What do I need to do electrical wise to be prepared so that when they arrive I can have them up and running quickly? I have a lot of 110 plugins in this room (I live in the US) but the spare room shares the same wall as my breaker box so I can add whatever wiring I need to. Do i need to add plugins that can handle 220? what is recommended? Thanks for any help!

You will need to run things at 220 to get the proper power out of the PSUs. These machines pull 1200w each so you will need to upgrade your electrical if you are running them at home. You are looking at 10k watts in total which is a lot of power to run in a home. Also you will need some major cooling if you are planning on keeping these in one bedroom.

Also remember its not about the number of plugs in the room its about the number  of circuits. Most houses have multiple outlets off of the same breaker so you need to plan accordingly.

Stop buying industrial miners, running them at home, and then complaining about the noise.

I'd also be concerned about the quality of the power and also your ability to cool these devices properly.

Honestly with that much of an investment I'd consider going with a co-location..   JUST to protect the investment.. also if the technical aspect of environmentals isn't in your wheel house it might be the best overall for up time and reliability.

Yeah, that's not going to work... Speaking from experience here...

You will need a dedicated 240v circuit breaker to give those power supplies the voltage they need in order to efficiently put out 1200watts. The heat that ONE unit puts out will keep a 200 sq ft room at 85 Fahrenheit very easily. In short you need the following:

240V Circuit
240V PDU
Heavy Gauge Power cables from the PDU to the miner
Wired Ethernet connections from the miner to the switch
Somewhere to exhaust the heat

Thanks for the info guys! I didn't plan on running it off of the 110, I was just giving an idea of my current wiring setup. I remembered reading somewhere that it had to be ran off of 220 for best efficiency. We built my house completely ourselves with no contract work (my uncle is a certified electrician) so I think I will have him install new wiring in the bedroom. As for the heating and cooling I think I will try to have 4 of them (D3's) in this spare bedroom and maybe the other 4 at a different location. I have a commercial grade AC unit for the whole house so I think it can handle the 4 and possibly even the 8.

So what do you suggest when it comes to the breakers? Can I run 2 outlets and use 2 of the D3's hooked up to 1 breaker? and then have another breaker for 2 other outlets? Also, what outlets do I need to install? Are they the standard outlets that you plug something into but just wired for 220? Or does someone have a picture? lol like I said I plan on buying the power supplies from bitmain so whatever their plugins have I can wire into my wall.

My long term plan is to build another building beside my house that will have its own dedicated wiring straight from the pole and have its own AC unit and venting. For the bedrooms for now I will vent them out. I may look into heating my home with them once it gets colder. Either way any advice will be welcomed! Thanks!

Nevermind, I spoke with my uncle and I think I know how I will do most of the setup. A last question though, what does the plug that bitmain sends with their APW3+ power supply look like? I'm trying to make sure I buy the right outlet. Is it the one with one of the terminals turned sideways? Because I think I'm going to add about 4 220 volt outlets and each of them will have their own wiring and breaker at the breaker box. The other 4 I think will go to another location. Thanks for the input!

Does anyone use the miners to heat their home? If so which way did you do it? Also, what would be the suggested way to vent the hot air to the outside in the summer? I can hook up a vent to go to the outside through the wall and use dryer vent.

This is where you have to look at your situation and use some creativity.  Remember that when you're venting all that hot air outside, you're pulling in the same amount of outside air somewhere else.  You don't want to be sucking outside air into your living room and exhausting air conditioned air from your mining space.  In other words, make sure you plan for air intake as it is also important.

Ok I will definitely take that into account! Thanks!

BTW have you ever ordered from Bitmain? I'm wondering because I plan on getting in on the next batch of the L3+ and idk if I should fill in the sections on my address at the bottom that say:

Tax ID:
HS Code:
VAT:
EIN/SSN:
IMPORTER NO

Do these need to be filled out? I live in the US and I was just wondering if leaving these blank will cause me any problems with customs. thanks!

Is your second site far away or can you go there quickly ?
Depending on that i would recommend planning some monitoring-equipment

I think you should also consider adding a renewable power source to your build if you're still going for it.

Are you still pursuing this?   I also am stuck with electric power so might as well have my heaters making money for me in the winter too Smiley

Too much electric power you need. So these are not for home minings and i guess it will be dangerous four your electric lines in home.
You need a ware house with a nice electrical power support.

It can be done in the home if you do it correctly. We ended up running a new wire for each outlet. I think we used 10-2 wire. Probably could've done 8-2 if we really wanted to. I plugged in a PDU to each outlet and each PDU can handle 4-5 miners maximum. So I can run 12-15 miners in my home without a problem. Luckily enough for me, my power company will upgrade my transformer for free outside of my house. I have a shop that I plan on putting my small farm in once everything gets going, it can house up to 50 miners fairly easy.

Does anyone here know how much more efficient it would be to run the D3 off 220 instead of 110?  I have a warehouse with industrial power but it will not be ready for another month. In the meantime I would like to run them out of my house. I have an extra 220 circuit that is not in use now but I'd rather use 110. Is there a difference other than efficiency? I mean, will the amount of power effect hashrate?

It won't effect the hashrate but with the miners and psu's you have you will be at peak capacity running on 110, running them on 220 will give you the necessary room to be "safe"

Hey man, so you have a breaker dedicated to each machine? I'm assuming that's at least 20 amps per breaker right, since it's wired for 220v?   I'm also running into this issue, I have 6 D3's that'll be here in a few weeks, my outside breaker can handle 150 amps for the whole house.  I talked with an electrician and he said each machine will work with 10 amps each.  So that takes me to 60 amps for all six.  With everything turned on in the house it's just pulling 60 amps in total and now with an extra 60 that's pushing 120 and I still have 30 to work with.  I live in the mountain west and right now it's cold and snowing outside so I don't have to worry about cooling for the next 6 months.  In the summer I'll have to figure something out.

I wonder if I can honestly run these six miners off three 220 outlets with PDUs?  thoughts?

If you have 20 amps x 220V (outlet) = you have 4,400 watts to work with but a good rule of thumb is you must only use 80% of the total wattage of that single circuit. Let's say your using the max of 1600w for 1 D3 miner: 1600W x 2 D3 miner = 3,200 watts, 80% of 4400W is 3520W. So to answer your question, (if we are basing it on 1600W max capacity) only 2 is recommended, but then again sometimes this miner won't even reach the 1600W power consumption. SO you can use 3 miners in 1 outlet/circuit (connected by PDU) AT YOUR OWN RISK!

Sorry for the late reply, you're right, I studied this for several more hours and then hired an electrician to install 6 separate 220v outlets each with 20amps.  Its overkill, but better safe than sorry.  I also paid the money to get an upgrade to 200 amps for the whole house.  I made sure they got a surge protector in there too.  My electrical costs are only .10 kWH since I live in the mountain west and most of our energy is cheap coal.
