Btw. I've updated my node to the latest version from github (some days ago, after the new version was announced) and it still shows up as version 1.0.0.1. I noticed now new commits fom 12 hours ago, should I update again? Just asking as I see some nodes with version 1.0.1.1 in the list.

The password is mandatory, an unique password will be created during first wallet launch (on Windows). Sure, you can change it! It's used for RPC calls, e.g. for miners, yes.

As of now, the SciFi blockchain is not that big, ~ 38 MB. You should be able to download it in a matter of minutes (there are plenty nodes). In case you really, really need a bootstrap.dat - let me know, I can upload it to mega.nz.
