i have become so scared of losing my wallet.dat i have spent over 200 hours testing and using many different security products, from password manager to pretty good privacy.
i can't sleep at night and i noticed my hair is falling out at a fast rate.
anyone else in the same boat?

As long as there is not a keylogger in the machine you use to mount your truecrypt partition... that's the main problem. |

You could spread them out across multiple wallets... my reasoning being you could keep some "extra secure" by hardly ever restoring them.
Just a thought.

Software, mostly. I plan to buy a new computer and then allocate my old laptop only for bitcoin usage, as long as it survives. No web browsing on it. It will be quite annoying getting the addresses from the "surfer machine" to the "bitcoin machine" each time I want to do a payment, so maybe I'll leave a small wallet on the dangerous machine as well. Something that wouldn't make me pull my hairs out if it's stolen. Or maybe I'll just get used with copying and pasting the addresses around. |

I put half on Mt Gox. under lock and key with my favorite password: "passw0rd" <-rock solid. Also, a nice gentleman that I met on 4chan who said he was a security expert offered to hold my wallet.dat file for me. I sleep soundly at night now knowing when I need it he will be just a quick email away with my file.

if you're so scared about losing it,
take a computer and a bootable USB linux drive
put a blank hard disk into the computer or save the files into the bootable USB stick, boot from the USB stick,
plug in ethernet cable, download bitcoin client from official site, unplug ethernet cable
install bitcoin cable write down a sending address to that wallet. shut down that computer
remove the harddisk/usb stick with your wallet on it
Saveguard that hard disk/ usb stick somewhere where no one can touch it, don't ever put the hard drive/ usb stick into a computer that has internet connection unless you plan to send the bitcoins from your wallet to another, use it as you would use a savings account, don't browse the internet, if you connect to the internet, send the bitcoins to another wallet and disconnect again
You should have at least 2 wallets, 1 for savings, one for regular use, transfer excess bitcoins to your savings account so the worst that can happen is that you lose your regular use wallet

Clean install of a nice secure Linux distro should keep you safe, then. Don't do anything but Bitcoin on it. |

Best way is to keep wallet.dat on a usb stick. At least thats what i do.

lol, what I did was use aescrypt for windows http://www.aescrypt.com/ and encrypted my wallet.dat with a really long password then uploaded the encrypted file to my gmail account. I'd say its pretty safe for free! |

I am not really concerned at this point. The issues are due to the trading houses and users using low security and not due to the bitcoin creation/processing itself. This will only result in those trading houses getting better and bringing to the forefront the fact that users need to secure their wallets or move their bitcoins into a holding area like MyBitcoin or a bitcoin bank if one ever shows up.

I plan to keep my dollars and BTC's on the market site for now until I feel more secure with how to handle the BTC"s on my own. In light of the recent events with the one major exchange I am waiting for OnlyOneTV to broadcasts that segment on securing ones wallet they have been talking about doing.
