I have a couple of these in backups from previous computers. Somewhere I have o.1 bitcoin that I was given years ago. I have BC 14.2 loaded & updated with block chain thru today. Can I drag & drop the dat file or do I need to save it somewhere that the software automatically updates ? Thanks

Unlike traditional banking where clients have only a few account numbers, with Bitcoin people can create an unlimited number of accounts (addresses). This can be used to easily track payments, and it improves anonymity.

The wallet.dat is located in the data directory of the client. There are various different directories for each different OS. Assuming that you are using Windows and you didn't change the data directory, navigate to %appdata%/Bitcoin and you should see a wallet.dat inside of it. Copy it out and paste it somewhere safe. Next, get your wallet.dat and copy it into that directory. You can now start Bitcoin Core and it will rescan and display your transactions.

You can find out where the data directory is by going to the debug window (on the third menu along from the top left).
You might not want to drag and drop the wallet file as the program will have to reindex again.

You can open the console there and specify Wallet=file.

Either that or this. Its a lot more convenient to just copy it into the data directory since its a hassle if the file change is not temporary.

I'm pretty sure that the client will not reindex unless its pruned when the wallet is changed. It will still reindex even if the client is pointed at a different wallet file.

Ranochigo,    I'm using windows 10.   Tried the search and command prompt for % appdata%/Bitcoin and both came up with no results. Am I missing a step here? When you say client does it mean my computer?

The command does not exist, neither is there a command for changing wallet.dat in the console. The closest I can think of is importwallet which imports the wallet dumpfile and not the wallet.dat.

Use my method. You can point it at another wallet file within the same data directory but that requires a flag at the start up.

Go to Help>Debug Window and you should see datadir. Beside that, there is a directory and that is your data directory. Navigate to there and you can paste your wallet.dat.

Have you tried searching for a file using the built-in search in Windows?

Try.
Open disk C:
In the upper right corner you will see the search line
Insert: wallet.dat

And if your computer has this file, it will be displayed as a result of the search

Has anyone had any success in transfering the funds from an old multibit wallet to an electrum or a core wallet?

Is it multibit HD you're using.
If so:
1. Note down your seed somewhere from multibit
2. Open electrum
3. Select "standard wallet"
4. Select "I already have a seed" > Paste the seed in there > click options and check BIP39 seed.
5. In the next step, your derivation path is m/0'
6. Your wallet should open and syncronise with your balance.

If it's multibit classic.
1. Export your private keys from multibit
2. Open electrum
3. Select "standard wallet"
4. Select "use public and private keys" and copy and past the private keys from your multibit wallet.
5. Wait for the wallet to syncronise fully with the network and your balance should be displayed.

Why he do this ?
Because it is a scam... he only needs 5 desperate people to give him $20 and he has $100.

DO NOT buy that file... it's no doubt exactly like that fake wallet file that has been circulating for months/years... someone hacked a wallet file and removed a few transactions so that it looks like the wallet contains loads of bitcoins... but it is effectively an invalid wallet that will never load and does not contain as many bitcoins as advertised.

so like that scam scheme is compiled. I have known Bitcoin for 2 years but this is the first time I know of a case like this.
thanks for the advice you give , I'll be careful again in a case like this.
