Bitcoin mining is now a specialized and very risky industry, just like gold mining. Amateur miners are unlikely to make much money, and may even lose money. Bitcoin is much more than just mining, though!

I would imagine that non-Newbie status posters rarely take a look at this forum. While I agree with some sort of mechanism to insure that new accounts are legitimate users that have a positive interest in things, I feel the current mechanism only fills the the Newbie section with fluff and non important topics, and only provides a 4 hour wait time for bots/spammers to do any damage.

I don't have a cure all answer to this problem, maybe a time based system where posts are initially limited and additional posting cap razed as the account matures by age or # of posts. Also maybe implement the ability to reduce an accounts posting cap if any of the posts are flagged as spam or offensive.

Just some thoughts from a newbie who needs to make 5 posts to be able to use this forum, while simultaneously trying to suggest improvements to the process in the spirit of the forum.

It's pretty easy to also tell people who spammed their 5 posts to get our of newbie section. If you look @ someone's first 5 posts, if they're just there to get out of newbie section it makes it much more likely they're a scammer.

Peek-a-boo.       Smiley

Raised, I assume, for "razed". Interesting idea. I hope you'll mention it to the mods when you get your non-newbie chance soon. Really!

I remember that self-conscious feeling. Is anybody listening? Do I really have to do this? Should I pretend to do something useful to beat the system?... Relax - it's your system you are trying to improve. The newbie thing will be over before you know it. As a quick self-test of any suggestion for improvements to the newbie system, ask yourself whether you would still think it was an improvement if you were no longer a newbie? Will you still champion the idea when you are on the other side of the fence? Yours has merit, I think. Most don't - they are blatantly short-sighted, self-serving, opportunistic and not at all aimed at improving the community.

See you on the inside soon (he said smugly).

the sense of 5 posts is.... none, better way would  be 0.01 or 0.005 btc to get full access.
People would think twice before troliing

except that would require a great deal of work by the moderators to keep track of who donated and is now allowed access.  This is easier.

It's not that big of a deal. You could technically do it in a few minutes, and still provide helpful information.  Undecided

Not only does it help with spam but I think it's a good practice overall anyways, makes people get more involved in the community as soon as they sign up. I'd think it makes for a lot less accounts that aren't ever being used to post too.

Why do you make them worthless, instead of using the opportunity for a strong introduction?

I try to be respectful and informed.

To me it seems quite logical to have a 5 post history to use the forum in general. People who scam and spam i think might not do so here just for the shear inconvenience. hopefully these folks with just move along to another place to do their dirty work.

Also in 5 posts people will probably get a sense of the typr of person you are.

Anyway, I am new to bitcoin and play poker on seals with clubs, a bitcoin poker site.

I am excited to learn more about btc through this forum
