In 1999, Romania was the first European country to introduce a full set of circulating polymer banknotes (the banknotes were issued between 1999 and 2001).These included the commemorative 2000 lei note which was issued to celebrate the last eclipse of the millinneum.

They can literally shrink to less than 25% of their original size if left on a hot plate or washed at high temps
Otherwise they are pretty hard to counterfeit the lower values (because it would cost you more to make than to purchase). They also wear off less, they do get ripped even if the graphics don't show visible wear.
