In 1999, Romania was the first European country to introduce a full set of circulating polymer banknotes (the banknotes were issued between 1999 and 2001).These included the commemorative 2000 lei note which was issued to celebrate the last eclipse of the millinneum.

just get few of them and make bets against your friends, you cant rip them
Each block is stacked on top of the previous one. Adding another block to the top makes all lower blocks more difficult to remove: there is more "weight" above each block. A transaction in a block 6 blocks deep (6 confirmations) will be very difficult to remove.

I guarantee that in January in Canada where I live I will not only be able to rip a polymer note, I will be able to make confetti from it. There are not indestructible.

First ones are coming here Nov 2011 in 100 dollar denomination.

They can literally shrink to less than 25% of their original size if left on a hot plate or washed at high temps Smiley

Otherwise they are pretty hard to counterfeit the lower values (because it would cost you more to make than to purchase). They also wear off less, they do get ripped even if the graphics don't show visible wear.

I love how they call them polymer money and not plastic money. Central banks are masters of PR.
