Rest in peace, BTC-e. You can't now change password and turn on 2FA since U.S. slaves stole our BTC-e money.
Actually, that's not the case. The site was brought back online on btc-e.nz. Password reset is mandatory and resetting 2FA is advisable. It is definitely them, because people have been reporting for a week or more now that they are receiving their refunds (55% of original funds).
I know because each email address I use is different. I made the account probably back in 2012 or 2013.
So did the owner sell the addresses to spammers after the site was shut down by the feds? Or maybe the owner is trying to start some new service since the spam is Bitcoin related.
Are you sure that your email address was never used anywhere else?
The email address associated with my oldest account (registered in 2012) was leaked in the database hack a few years ago. On that account, I did receive a BTC-e phishing email 1-2 weeks ago, which claimed to be offering refunds from the site. However, I did not receive any phishing emails on accounts that were created in the last ~ 1 year. I would have to check when I get home to see if I received anything today, per the OP. I suspect that my email box will be empty on the more recent accounts.
