In my experience the miner makes little to no difference. But the settings you use definitely make a difference. Make sure you enable vectors - it makes about 50MH/s difference on my 5830.
Catalyst are the video card drivers and Stream is the OpenCL SDK (it's been renamed to AMD APP now though).

./phoenix.py -q 3 -v -u http://... -k phatk DEVICE=0 WORKSIZE=128 BFI_INT VECTORS FASTLOOP=false AGGRESSION=13
Change WORKSIZE to 256 if you have underclocked your memory.
AMD Stream APP SDK is the OpenCL software development library which is required to interface with your cards in the way needed to mine Bitcoin.
AMD Catalyst is the graphics driver software which tells your computer how to recognise your graphics card, and allows you to overclock it & monitor it.

great thank you two! im getting 280 Mhash/s now and im more than happy with that. I have one more question though, maybe you can help me with that also i cant decide between Slushs Pool, Deepbit and BTC Guild, which of the three could you recommend? and should i choose pay per share or proportional with my relatively low hashrate of around 300 Mhash/s in total? hope you can help me with that oen too

Also you can get more than that out of a 5830, assuming you're using Linux, try doing aticonfig --adapter=all --od-enable then aticonfig --adapter=all --odsc 966,180 Keep an eye on the temperature but a 5830 should run that clock fine and get around 305MH/s.

your line "-f 0 -w 256 -a 1 -v" bumped me from 204 Mh/s to 231 ! Thanks! I am getting a lot more "warning: job finished, miner is idle", tho I just started today. I bought a 5830 on Amazon for $189 (total with shipping) - I know you can find them cheaper, but Amazon has good returns, and I wasn't sure it was going to work. I have a linux file server / firewall sitting here with an old Nvidia card in it. It has a PCIe 1.0 slot. I figured I'd slap an ATI in there and do some mining. I wanted to be able to return it, because I was not sure it would work in the 1.0 PCIe slot. It works fine. I have it under-clocked at 750 right now (stock is 800) to reduce the fan noise. My wife would complain. Right now there is only the power supply fan noise, and it's low. I figure I'll clock it up during the day when no one is home, then ssh in and clock it down when my wife gets home from work. My UPS has a digital read-out, and it will tell me the power draw. Running the miner adds 89 watts. Not too bad.

did exactly that about 2 days ago just with 980/300, runs very stable 24/7. Running at 310.06 mHash/s. I think thats a good rate no? Thank you very much for your answer

My pleasure)))
Do you use modified kernel? Phatk or what? Try to boost your mem to 360-365. It added me a couple of MH\s.

yes i use phatk, i modified the kernel according to this thread http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=23067.msg291159#msg291159 are there any other you know of? im getting now 312 mHash/s with 985/300. temp is at 76 C is that too high for 24/7 usage? what do u think abt difficulty increase? still profitable for you?

Yes, still profitable.
Did you play with mem frequency?
76C is ok. Any method to monitor vrm temps? Do not force your GPU fans to spin at 100% or they will die in a month or 2 of 24\7.

Why would you make such a claim as that? Why would you think that?

'cause I have 2 examples of my own and claims of far more experienced people than me.
EAH5870 - dead fan (does not spin more than 700 ~rpm even if hardware forced) GV-R587 - one fan is down the other is hardly spinning.

Do not force your GPU fans to spin at 100% or they will die in a month or 2 of 24\7. This is simply not true. Making your fans spin 100% 24/7 is bad for the motor, but usually they'll still last ~2 years. Still not recommended though. 76ºC is absolutely fine. Anything below ~85 isn't really an issue.

I ran a fan at 100 for a year(i didnt know you shouldnt).. it slowed down quite a bit after a year, even after a good cleaning, i could never get above 3800 rpms anymore(new was just under 5000). but it still worked.
