Is it possible to connect 50 - 100 of these units to 1 raspberry pi via USB hubs? If so what usb hub would be the best quality?

Hubs: http://elinux.org/RPi_VerifiedPeripherals#Working_USB_HubsGet only these. I got a belkin model not mentioned in the list, had to fiddle a little to get it to work. It has to be a powered hub. And keep in mind the usb erupter needs 0.5A power... so if your hub comes with 5V 4A adaptor then in theory u can have 8 USB block erupters on it. Is it accompanied with a diode to prevent the shortcut between the 5V PC port and the 5V extra power source If it isint, then ud need to block/cut the pin 1 (+5v) cable off the USB connection between the pi and hub. In theory u can have 127 devices on a single USB.... but i doubt if the raspi has enough CPU power to control them all.... I use raspi to mine 10 ztex 1.15y boards .... and cgminer eats 20 - 25% CPU. the cpu usage of cgminer has been proportional to the number of boards i hook up. ymmw with USB erupters...

Power Adapter cUL, FCC Input: 100 - 240 V, 50/60 Hz; 1.6A, maximum Output: 5 V / 4 A Cable: 1.2 m (6 ft.) so 8 erupters...

Will happily make a small donation to anyone who can find a 8port that meets the specs required!!!
U cant... AFAIK all usb hubs are 4 port hubs. you can find 7 port hubs that are internally 2 x 4 port hubs.(one port on hub 1 feeds hub 2). So you can get 4 port 7 port 10 port 13 port 16 port and so on...

just buy cheap usb externder cables split the cable get a 5v psu and run all from 1 5v psu and you wont need powerd hubs

I think i get what you mean, but i really am not technical in the way of building things I'be been waiting for plug and play mining devices for a while..... just kept missing the boat with other ASIC suppliers(avalon). when i spoke to friedcat in PM regarding USB hubs he kind of told me that cheap ones were not good.... unfortunately he also did not want to recommend a USB hub to use, i guess i can undestand why. We would like to warn you that most USB hubs on the market have really bad quality. They omit necessary components to try to reduce the cost. Please check at least the following before buying:
1. Is it accompanied with a diode to prevent the shortcut between the 5V PC port and the 5V extra power source? 2. Is each port on it properly fused?

I don't own a Mac. I was asked to find out. This IS the "setup" thread, is it not?

I am going to try and run the units from a laptop with 4usb ports, the pi idea is out the window.
i notice the hub you are using is 3.0..... does this make a difference in performance?
None. USB 3.0 makes transferring files faster.... Bitcoin mining isn't constrained by data speed, it's very low bandwidth. Even USB 1.0 is good enough. Mining IS constrained by the electricity you provide to it though. So, you've received good advice: get a hub with enough total electricity output to at least equal all of your Block Eruptors amperage requirements added together (0.5 Amps x 8 Block Eruptors = one 4 Amp USB hub) Cooling: the miners will almost certainly become fairly warm, especially with those plastic cases around the little circuit board, but they won't require anything more than common-sense placement of your eventual rig. So, a 12 foot by 12 foot room with plenty of air getting through it is probably more than adequate to keep it all cool, no external fans or whatever. But if you put the rig in your sock drawer, especially without removing the socks first, you might end up cooking something.

My rig will be in the attic. It is very cold in winter months sub 10 degrees C (and actually uses electric heating so electricity costs are non existent 6months+) However in summer if the sun is on the roof it can get up to 24/25 degrees C in there. Is that too hot? I will obviously place a fan facing my pc+miners.
Opinion?

It depends how big the rig is. The heat generated is directly related to the wattage the rig draws. If your attic is too small, or not well ventilated enough, the heat will build up before it finds a natural balance (and that will push your ambient temperature up). Find out what temperature sensors your equipment has (NOT just the miners themselves, your PC can also suffer in overheated conditions) and check them as the summer comes around. Sorry, there's no single correct answer to your question!

Opening the windows in the attic will maintain a max temp of about 25 degrees. The question I guess I'm asking is operating at 25 c for 12 hours a day 6 weeks a year too hot for them? I will obviously have a fan pointed at them to maintain airflow. (Most of the year they will be below 19c) Myrdd
