Ripple has also been around for a long time as far as I can see.
What is interesting though is that many of the early coins either haven't delivered or have disappeared entirely, something to bear in mind when looking at alts nowadays. Some projects will succeed, but a lot, probably the majority, won't.

great info I don't know that Namecoin was the first alt coin that has been created after btc, not really familiar with such project and I'm happy to learned
it from here though I'm still thinking that ltc was the the first alt coin as well thinking that it was a copycat of btc.

Ripple I think is 2012, so you're right that Namecoin would be before that. My mistake. Although I wasn't around in cryptocoins at the time.
Presumably there aren't many of those old alt coins that have survived this long. Obviously Litecoin and Ripple, but maybe not so many others.

I really dont know what altcoin was one of the first and one of the best. I just know that digibyte is very old coin and its still getting some attention in the currect market situation. NXT coin was very early too, but dont know the launch dates for sure!

Thank you for this information and i didnt expect that Namecoin is the first altcoin because when i do jump on bitcoin world i didnt ask these kind of question related to alts but now i do learn something new today.It might not be a big information but atleast it does help those people who do have these kind of questions on mind.I thought the first altcoin was DOGE. |

Fantastic explanation, much appreciated! I'm actually a bit surprised to learn that LTC is as old as it is. My understanding is that it is still one of the fastest coins out there (but that probably came from later developments like the lightning network). |

I had heard of Namecoin but never got into detail. The purpose is good and the price got up to $10 at one point in time but I guess the supporters left it because lack of applications for the coin and real life usage.

I also thought that Litecoin was the first altcoin, but I was wrong. |

Thanks for this useful piece of trivia  Now that I recall, there was also an ICO last month (or July) that was called Name Token, but that was an ERC20 token. And guess what, exactly the same purpose, or rather, domain registration was one of the activities. I'm not sure any project is powerful enough to take over what iCANN and all the gigantic registrars already monopolize, though! |
