This LightningATM [A Beginner's guideline to Bitcoin Lightning Network] was built to distribute small amounts of BTC - obviously - it only accepts coins. It shall demonstrate the power of Bitcoins Lightning Network. A two cent coin is enough to buy some satoshis at the LightningATM. A physical coin exchanged into bitcoin and send to your lightning wallet in seconds, (a convenient and easy on-boarding process for people that are new to bitcoin). ©

An old thread was used for the post / Not including image processing, the material was almost entirely written and previously published by github/21isenough.

       [1] Hardware requirements

Below you will find detailed information on hardware requirements, or check here

    • Further Details
➥ Make sure there's Wifi available and you know the Wifis name (SSID) and the password.
➥ Luster terminals make your life easier when connecting cables and can prevent soldering.
➥ A soldering iron and solder are handy and some connections might be better soldered then clamped/wrapped/screwed.
➥ For the laser cut case, @21 bought small plastic handles that he attached to the bottom of the case as legs.
➥ You would also need M2.5x10mm screws to assemble the pieces http://bit.ly/382jufj

       [2] Hardware Setup

    • Hardware Overview

    • RaspberryPi and Display

    • Assembly and Software

➥ Additional description of the (Setup Process) here.
➥ Wiring Details here (The described Wiring Details are correct if you only use PaPiRus Zero - ePaper / eInk Screen.).

       [3] Software requirements

Below you will find detailed information on Software requirements , or check here

    • Linux / Mac / Windows
    • Software to flash an SD card (Balena Etcher).
    • SSH client (Putty or your standard command line).
➥ The major part of the SWR comes directly with the code from the GitHub repository.
➥ Everything else will be directly installed onto the Raspberry Pi during the installation of the ATM.
➥ It's all thoroughly explained in the videos.

       [4] Software Setup

I did not add step-by-step software setup to this thread as the displayed currency and a few other details do not suit me.

       [5] Supported Wallets / Setup / Communication

Click on the links to see a step-by-step guide on how to set up Bitcoin Lightning wallets with Lightning ATM, (there are two wallets you can use with LATM).

    • Lntxbot (Using this wallet you have no control over your private keys).
              ➥ Updating your current installation.
             ➥ Installing Lntxbot.
             ➥ Funding the Lntxbot.
➥ Connecting the Lntxbot to the ATM
➥ First transaction with the ATM

    • LND (on BTCPayServer).
              ➥ Updating your current installation.
➥ For a little more advanced users.
➥ Displaying your BTCPayServer QR code.
             ➥ Connecting to the ATM.
➥ First transaction with the ATM.
(Make sure, you have finished the hardware video part 3, before you attempt to setup your wallet).

              ➥ How the ATM "talks".
➥ API endpoint, usernames and passwords.
➥ Talking to an API in practice.
➥ Requesting Lntxbot balance in python.

(A quick description on how you can start the ATM automatically, as soon as the Raspberry Pi has booted).

This is a hobbyist project and it is not secure and reliable enough, @21isenough does not recommend using this setup in a professional environment.

I first saw the idea of creating a Lightning ATM in this thread, when Jsraw fleetingly shared a couple of images and links. Since I am a engineer by profession, and since I had been planning to create a bitcoin piggy bank for my niece for a long time, I was very interested in this project. Since I have the equipment on hand to create the wireframe, the task becomes even easier, but still there are many open questions. Later, I will share more detailed information on changing LightningATM specifications, since this instruction is only partially suitable for me, until then, enjoy the discussion.  Wink

Lets hope the lightning network is NOT implemented worldwide. It's not a solution at all and gives just back power to big financial institutions and power to companies like blockstream who toke over bitcoin, making it slow and bad to make money out of it. Wake up, bitcoin is not anymore what its used to be or what it should be. BTC is not Bitcoin.

Running an payment hub as an normal person does not fit current worldwide laws and that makes it illegal for you. That's why Bitcoin as it should be, is not illegal because its peer-to-peer.

As soon as you transfer funds for another person to another, you need a financial service license. Which means in other words couple millions of dollars, lawyers and much more.

Besides that, literally no one is using the lightning network right now or wants to do so. There are about 20 merchants worldwide accepting the lightning network. And I'm not talking about big merchants, I talk about some student resident in south America and ski hubs in Italy.

All those lightning fanboys don't even get what it really is about.

In case you missed there is also a video by @21 ($ cents) and @thedavidcoen (Euro cents): "Coins turned into bitcoin - literally in seconds - received over the lightning network"

I would think so, but can't be sure, you can ask in their Telegram group https://t.me/lightningatm_building or their github https://github.com/21isenough/LightningATM

Just Dave's opinion: Cheap off brand eink displays suck. Bad (burst) pixels, poor QC on the wire contacts, etc. Spend a few bucks more and get the PaPiRus one.

As stated above "Python scripts are built to talk to the manufacturers library, future version of the software will support other brands as well for example from the brand waveshare.", So DaveF is right, if you visit telegram chat maybe @21isenough will create a script not only for PaPiRus and Waveshare but also for other brands you prefer. It's nice to see that someone else besides me is interested in assembling #LightningATM.

The idea below is a step in the right direction. Let's hope that in 10 years, most of the services related to bitcoin will switch to SATs as a standard, and as I said earlier, 1 Bitcoin will soon be out of reach for the majority, so I tend to agree that the SATs standard will help spread Bitcoin's influence.

With the price increasing and Bitcoin in the mainstream media, I dug out an old app idea and launched 'The Price In Sats (thepriceinsats.com)' - certainly not a new concept but I hope the website and the use of pricing everyday items in Sats will give people a usable gauge for how much something costs like a bottle of coke, steak or even a pizza.

Just found this awesome live shop free to use to have a first hand experience of the Lightning Network (testnet). I showed it to a few friends (skeptical about Bitcoin in general and LN in particular) and they were gobsmacked at the end.
Could it make sense to add it to OP for those who want to test it without getting hurt?

Does anyone have a source for cheaply getting the case made in the US?

I went to my local guy who does plastic cutting and for a one off job the price was $75. Which is just nuts for something that although it does look cool, is not going to do much other then sit around and be shown off to people now and then.

I really wanted to help you with this, and I found out the final price in my neighborhood and it turned out to be a little cheaper, but the catch is that I am not from the USA, so in the end the ATM box and delivery will cost even more. By the way, I have a counter question ... do you have any ideas how to integrate contactless payments into the box in place of coins? I checked GitHub again but didn't find anything on this issue. And one more thing ... you didn’t accidentally try to find out about the boxes in their chat, I didn’t go there, but I remember that somewhere there was a link to the Discord channel, (can find).

I would suggest contacting @MoparMiningLLC. He can "3D print" it for you and he's based in the US.
    - Just to be clear, the $75 price was for "this design", am I right? If you have no problem with having little room for the installation part, then I would suggest designing your own case [assuming that you already know how or you're willing to learn] and reduce the overall design in half [based on the images, there are a lot of empty spaces] and that'd significantly reduce the cost of creating one.

contactless payments into the box in place of coins?
Since you mentioned before that you're doing this project as a hobby, then why not stick to the retro style/theme [the "coin acceptor" part is the only component that makes it different from the rest]?

    ...

The files that they have are setup for a cutter not for 3D printing.
You have to tweak the files a bit to get a good 3D print, so if someone is going to have to spend time tweaking the files then I am going to want to pay them something so it puts me back to a higher price point.

As for why not do another case, no reason I just outside of I think that one looks cool.

Will look around at a few other off the shelf case designs and see if I can adapt something.

Well, I was not going to deviate from the design of the original box published on the github, the more I have everything for this. But honestly speaking, I put this project on the back burner for the reason that I did not manage to attract my nephew to work in the summer (as I wanted), besides, there were a lot of other urgent matters that consumed all my time.

p.s. I admit I haven't even sent the T-shirts to the BCA winners yet, but I will fix it in the very near future [although the hitch with this is not only my fault]Embarrassed

    ~Snipped~
Despite being a beginner in 3D designing, I'm confident enough that I could either recreate it [for free] in STL format [assuming that there won't be any legal issues] or come up with a different design [perhaps a compact one].
    - I tried my best to find the measurements for each part but since I don't know my way around GitHub, I couldn't find it. If you or anybody else provides the measurement for the components and parts, I wouldn't mind spending some time to come up with a design for the community [without charge].

I put this project on the back burner for the reason that I did not manage to attract my nephew to work in the summer (as I wanted),
I guess it now makes sense why you were looking for a way to modernize it [contactless payment] or rather integrate it into the original design.

nice one is there any alternative of coin acceptor, since bitcoin keep rising i think penny will worth 0 point with a lot zero satoshi, and would be great changes the cardboard with some strong material like alumunium or acrylic right.

Hey icopress I had no idea you were a technician/engineer or whatever it is you call people who make such electronics, I love this!

Now imagine if El Salvador made their bidding for Bitcoin ATMs public contract and people like you could bid for it and possibly help build something more practical for real Bitcoin economy. With more professional funding you could make it meet safety/security/privacy standards.

    Amazing!

    Interesting application.

I'm wondering why someone would go to the effort of seeking out a Bitcoin ATM just to purchase two cents worth of bitcoin - other than for leaving a small tip, or, to have a few micro rolls of dice or roulette?

Conversely, someone might decide to get rid of a jar of coins for Lightning Bitcoin and you've then got to clear those coins at the bank.
