Russian central bank to ban websites offering cryptocurrencies

Russia will block access to websites of exchanges that offer crypto-currencies such as Bitcoin, Russian Central Bank First Deputy Governor Sergei Shvetsov said on Tuesday. He called them “dubious”.
Russian financial authorities initially treated any sort of money issued by non-state approved institutions as illegal, saying they could be used to launder money. “We cannot stand apart. We cannot give direct and easy access to such dubious instruments for retail (investors),” Shvetsov said, referring to households.

The can ban websites, but Russians are clever people so it will not be problem for them to use VPN and access the websites anyways Wink In any case, it really shows that the banks are fearing Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies they don't control.

I am not worried about this, I notice when bitcoin prices go up, there must be actions or issues that are not good for crypto. I am sure the news that this Russian central bank will not affect the current and future crypto.

You must take note that it is "going" to ban them. Has not done it yet.

Not sure how the legislation would work there. If they ban cryptocurrencies they also ban US dollars, Euros etc.

Lets watch this space. If there was an easy way to do this it would have already been done.

Cryptocurrency is decentralized. There is no one to attack to stop it!! Governments already know this and its a HUGE headache for them.

and russian people love crypto. I read about Putin met Ethereum CEO Vitalik Buterin, and other good news about how cryptocurrency is very welcomed in russia. Seems only central bank against it there

That's their loss. Surely Russia of all people will understand the pointlessness of trying to ban websites. Unless they're prepared to invest in high tech software and a lot of programmers who must work round the clock to actively block nodes and tunnelling, blacklist DNSs and monitor internet traffic, they're going to have a hard time blocking citizens from a huge part of the internet. And with so much Russian interests behind cryptos and ICOs, you can be sure they'll find ways to access.

Putin would be miffed at the central bank for sure.

I guess how this plays out all depends on whether they're trying to stifle BTC in Russia because they want the new Russian official cryptocurrency built on Ethereum to prosper.

Otherwise russia planning to get more bitcoin by spreading this kind of rumours as a announcement. Nobody can stop bitcoin.

OMG))) And Russia is there too .. So what will it give? Include VPN and all right again. In my opinion, it is a useless and losing decision to fight with crypto-currencies. We must not fight, but regulate. I hope that China has already understood this.

Russian government should embrace btc to fight the embargo.  Why would they want to fight btc when their currency is not that good?

I think same. If country will ban cryptocurrencies it will make a big step back in development. Stupid decisions are making fast but what next..?
If big investors and businessmen will defence Bitcoin than it have a hope to survive Smiley

Banning websites in Russia is an action about as useless as it gets. I will be really disappointed with humanity if this impacts Bitcoin price, especially after China comeback.

I guess the market is used to such news, there is not much impact to Bitcoin price. Even if the Russia government block all crypto websites, the Russian will have all ways to access the websites.

I think this is just another method and way of pressure from Russian government.. But I dont think it will make modern Russian people to stop working with cryptocurrencies and use such kind of websites:).

Although price of btc is not affected

IMO this decision is big as Russia is a kinda big region there

Anyhow just look at china, then look back at Russia.

Everything is fine i suppose, when you are banned, get a cryptocard Smiley
