This is jargon for trading. Pump: To make the price go up with news, usually irrelevant news, that are sensationalist and not really of substance, but are spread just to trigger people into buying, even if they are fake. Example: The fake "Amazon is accepting BTC in X days" news is a fake pump. Dump: To sell after the pump. That's basically it. A "pump and dump" coin is basically a shitcoin whose only purpose is to get pumped, then dumped. You can make money out of these, but most likely you will end up bagholding. Additional term: bagholding: To hold a coin that keeps stagnating in price.

Don't use that phrase "pump & dump" when it comes to bitcoin. It gets so overused, it's ridiculous.
Pump & dump refers to a stock scam scheme, whereby people artificially inflate the price of a security by buying it all up and hyping it up to unwitting investors. Then when the price shoots up (the pump), the scammers sell everything they have (the dump) and make a profit. And in the end, the security drops back down to wherever it was before the pump, and probably much lower.
People on this forum just refer to a price increase in bitcoin as a "pump", but those folks are ignorant and are just parroting what they read. Since everyone else is using the term, they use it too. And it's mindless.
The phrase is more aptly applied to shitcoins, where P&D scams are commonplace. Big investors do exactly what I described above.

A lot of people refers to it like short/long positions in forex, because they mean quite the same, but in fact, they are very different things because it depends on altcoins. I am going to sell some of my bitcoins before december, so i can say that i am going to "dump" some of my coins, i mean "sell" them. That is how dump applies, but "pump" refers to buy, or only hype the price of a coin to make it go up. And this is very simple.

It certainly has an effect on bitcoin. When you say pump, it means the bitcoin value is going up and on thr other hand, dump would mean its value has gone down.

The tactics of pumping and pouring so many users into Bitcoin are that anyone involved in Bitcoin knows the meaning of doing so. In a word, pumping means that the price of a stock is going up dramatically thanks to the launch of rumors. Thanks to that, careless investors will invest in, and at that time, we will sell out all the stocks that we hold, or in other words, dump. This is very profitable for sellers. But I do not encourage this to happen when the fraud and falsehood is too much through the rumors, it makes the market really unhealthy.

this is a good question, pump is a process where bitcoin prices have increased quite high, usually the pump is often associated with a person or group who deliberately buy bitcoin in large quantities for a particular purpose. while dump is the process by which bitcoin prices decrease and impact globally. dumps usually cause panic for bitcoin owners. one of the dump processes that ever happened can even reduce the price of bitcoin to 50 Percent in just a few days. for a trader then dump and pump is a thing they really like because it can bring a lot of profits.

I think most altcoins, as theymos put it are pump and dumps, which is sad, but a reality and we must be careful what we invest in.

Bitcoins volume is far too high for a pump and dump. You'd need many whales with millions of $ to come close to even touching Bitcoins volume. This is more common of tiny altcoins with virtually zero volume thats value can be doubled with a few hundred or thousand dollars.

Correct. This is not applicable to bitcoin market anymore. But you can find a lot of "pump and dump" on most altcoins. They are artificially pump, meaning the coins are being boosted and inflated by some entities or group and later they will dump, selling their coins at a good price to take home profit. Its very fraudulent practice in the altcoin market, specially there are a lot of pump and dump groups behind manipulating the price in their favor.

Pump and dump has happened for decades on the stock market.
It is usually done with fraudulently news. When caught, the perpetuators can be punished or sued.
With altcoins, there is little that can be done. Hence, there is much more pump and dump on altcoins than with stocks.

Well you've heard it a dozen times by now, but it's a thing that some people who trade altcoins use to describe coins which are being hyped online on various forums and then proceeded to be "dumped", or massively sold-off in an attempt to make a lot of money off of the high price-per-coin that typically exists at the peak of any kind of pump n dump scheme. This only ever really affects altcoins though, and never has an affect on Bitcoin because Bitcoin is typically hundreds of times larger than the alts they pump, most of the time anyways. Sometimes a meme takes off, and when you think the joke is over it just keeps going and never really goes down.

So far I think a pump or dump is a phrase for bitcoin. I was wrong, and I've been doing something ridiculous. thank you for the science you give, you are right, many people use the expression of pump or dump when dealing with bitcoin. People are also wrong about it.

It is used like when its pump the price would reach the peak or rise and then dump sell the token while the price is high but it is not for long term. After that token left is just.like nothing.the value would be very cheap.

Pump and dump words are using for high and low and its related with bitcoin price some time the price of bitcoin become low and some time the price of bitcoin become high which is a part of trade and its normal bitcoin is facing these kind of things always which is a normal but the good quality of bitcoin is that it change his price in a week.

The ethereumdark coin (ethd) issue comes to mind. It is a classical dump. The pump and dump scheme is usually adopted by failing devs to ease themselves out and make easy cash by having the public deceived into thinking the momentary price rise of the coin is sustainable. The public rushes in, holders sell off their units and scamper.

The public rushes in, holders sell off their units and scamper. it is not just failing devs, it is almost used by all the altcoins out there. either by the developers themselves or their supporters and when they are dead coins they become the toys for pump groups. that is one of the many reasons why these altcoins run things like ICO or they go ahead and premine a large amount of their coin.
