This patent:
http://patft.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO2&Sect2=HITOFF&p=1&u=%2Fnetahtml%2FPTO%2Fsearch-bool.html&r=2&f=G&l=50&co1=AND&d=PTXT&s1=bitcoin&OS=bitcoin&RS=bitcoin

Is a prime example of what is wrong with both the USPO and the patent system itself.

This was patented AFTER multiple gaming systems were using the described method.  A simple google search would show that.  Now a big company owns this patent and would sue any small player using this system and the cost of fighting would be more then what most small companies can afford.  This causes two (at least) problems.  The first is nearly automatic, companies wishing to do something similar will simply locate overseas from the US.  This causes the US economic damage by eliminating the free market.

The second problem of course in my opinion is that patent should not have been granted in the first place because of prior art.  The patent itself is unjust even if you believe in the patent system.  And a small company would NOT be able to fight a bigger company even though they were right.

Then when it's challenged at that future lawsuit, the patent office will remove it. Yes, that is an annoying part of patents, and why it's good to have someone skilled in patent research assist you (Google doesn't count).
