The problem is everyone will have a different opinion, and some people will recommend a coin if they have some and want to sell it.
In general the coins nearer the top of the market have proven themselves more and are safer long term bets. As you go to lower cap coins the risk increases, but then so does the potential for big % increases. So this is why many people suggest to split your coins betwen some bitcoin some top altcoins and some lower altcoins.

I think you should hold RIPPLE in the long run as it's current price is really low for its potential. It is based upon the idea of global banking and global value transfer. Many banks and companies use it for their daily transactions. Its price can really grow in the coming years.

You can also hold stellar which is another coin based on simmilar idea. STELLAR recently became friends with IBM and many more technology tycoons which shows how much potential it really has. You can expect it's price to almost double in coming years.

Right now my investments are in ARK, Vertcoin, NAV, Monero and Verge.

The reason why I chose those five were because I did research into each coin, what they offer right now, their roadmaps, the team behind them, history etc and they were all coins that I liked the sound off and feel are undervalued or have the potential to rise a fair bit in the future.

I feel privacy coins will be big in the future, PIVX is a good one to watch. I swapped my PIVX out for Vert when it had its dip in September.

Like has already been said before though, everyone will have different opinions and their own interest. Use people's suggestions as just that and do your own research into them and make a decision from there.

I enjoy these kind of threads mainly to come across coins I haven't heard much about previously and then I can do some digging!

I suggest that ethereum is the best altcoin to hold if you wanna invest on it,but the growth rate is not very high but the risk factor is less in ethereum.I hope ethereum willa also become valuable once everyone started to use cryptocurrency.

Clearly the long term viability of a token has a large chance of being in relation to the sector it is in and the future intrinsic value. I agree with you . Investors really like the new altcoin or altcoin from the ICO project because it's really attractive to potential investors. In the future, Ethereum may disappear as everyone is losing faith in Ethereum

OK... I will give you the list of 5 altcoins, which are having the maximum future potential. The list is in decreasing order of potential.

1. Bitcoin Cash
2. Ethereum
3. Monero
4. Waves
5. Litecoin

I don't know much about Bitcoin Gold, and therefore I am not including it here. My opinion may change after its listing.

Ethereum is the best altcoin to hold it for a long time. They are going to create more partnerships in the future and they still get a lot of attention from the crypto people. I am sure that they will rise up with Bitcoin in long term.

it is always pretty hard to choose an altcoin for "long term". they are not known for good performance in long term. everyone wants to get their money out as fast as possible and as you can see every time bitcoin fluctuates altcoins are dumped hard.

if i had to choose, i would choose 2 coins: litecoin and monero.
LTC because it is the brother to bitcoin and keeps rising with it.
XMR because it is a well known anonymous coin which is popular and had a very good and stable price.

i am also looking more into coins that you can stake but i am a bit disappointed in their prices in long run which means you can not make decent profit from them.

there are no altcoins that can make you say "this is going to have a long term profit", there are so many factors in play that you don't know exactly which one is the best altcoin. Besides, there's always going to be a new altcoin that will caught your attention, it shows some promise and before you know it, you forget about the old one and invest in the new one. But there are some altcoin that i'd recommend you as a "safe" option for long term investment: Ethereum, Monero, Litecoin.
