i like their lyrics - mostly mocking how stupid society is. and sleep forever is a great song for cynics like me who live in their own dark mental space.

I think they're just over-exposed.

They are now, plus their last couple of albums have been shit. They kinda just went all sleazy sexist hard rock when that's not what their first few albums were about at all. Chad Kroeger seems like such a hypocrite now.

i don't think they are hated for their overexposure. they are hated because they are an extremely successful band yet their music has no individuality or creativity. their music is just like a commodity, so generic. and then you see them wildly popular  and even though their music is catchy yet so trite.. they rehash the same music styles and don't even go through evolution. it's the same reason why people in the 70's/80's hated the eagles.

i have really negative views towards "pop" music and i'd say nickelback is one of the most poppy rock bands ever.

I like all sorts of music. And The Beatles were pop music. Just because something is catchy doesn't make it bad. It's not easy to write a catchy hit song.

And I'd rather be a metal 'fag' than an indie hipster one.

ha, i like indie.. i prefer it over listening to pop. i like indie songs that sound something different, the kind of music where you aren't able to predict the next beat. i don't absolutely hate pop, but it's so bad these days. the only pop artist that i think is great/legendary today is.. adele. it's catchy with a whole lot of soul, unlike other pop artists today who abandon the latter.

is it just me or does anyone else find that there can be songs that you don't like.. even if you feel they are catchy? that's how i feel about pop.. it's got a lot of catch, but every song seems to be the derivative of another, so it feels like i already know every damn pop song out there.

You should listen to some metal with lots of time-signature changes then. I think Adele has a soulful voice but her music lacks any. Her music is just sterile pop to me. I love Hometown Glory though. She needs to do more stripped-down songs like that.
