Quick update for those of you who may be curious about the process involved in silkscreening fabric.

It all starts with a design in Illustrator:



The design is then printed onto clear film, with special high-opacity black ink:



The film is taped to a screen that has been coated with red photosensitive emulsion. The emulsion is thick, like glue, and dries in the polyester mesh of the screen.



The screen is then exposed to a bank of lights, in order to harden the emulsion. Any areas of emulsion where the light is blocked by the stencil will not harden, and can be washed away later with water.



After 20 minutes, I will be able to remove the film, and rinse the soft emulsion away with water. The screen then dries overnight before the next step.

The screen has been washed, rinsing away the soft areas of emulsion. this leaves bare mesh in the shape of our stencil:



Now, the screen must be left to dry overnight!

Before printing, the screen must be hardened once more as a precaution.



We then apply painter's tape to the frame, and add some ink.



The hardened emulsion will not let the ink pass through, but the bare mesh lets it pass easily.



A finished shirt.



The final step is to run the shirts through a conveyor oven, to permanently bond the ink to the fabric.



I'm going to be packaging up shirts tonight, and I'll start sending them out tomorrow. If you haven't sent me your mailing address already, please do so.
