@Hydrogen. Lyoto Machida will need to increase his secret training method if he wants to stay in the UFC. Derek Brunson showed him that it will take more than drinking your own pee to win versus a power puncher.

I reckon Lyoto and Demian need to retire.

Sadly, i agree with you. Being a fan of lyoto machida, its heartbreaking to see him lose though we have to understand that a lot of things contributed to this loss. He's not getting any younger. He was fighting among legends and hall of famers like himself several yead ago and most of those aren't active fighters anymore. No more comebacks please

I wonder what's going on in Machida's head right now.  He had been gone from the sport for so long, then came back as motivated to win as ever, maybe more.  And then losing in such a fashion. 

It sucks.  I don't think he'll come back anymore.

Maybe it's not that he took a time out off the octagon. One of the worst enemy of fighters regardless if its MMA or Boxing is age. They are not getting younger. No matter how long he stayed in the gym, no matter how many hours he sparred with his partner and no matter how good is his team, his body and mind will not work the same way it worked 6 years ago when he defeated randy Couture with a front kick. Machida is still one of the best fighters in my list.

Lyoto Machida was a good fighter but age and the battles he had being will take a toll and any hard chin will become brittle with age ,the biggest example was Chuck Liddell,he had a great chin when he was dominating and in the back end of his career he started getting knocked out cold with just a touch,he has to retire or fight elsewhere where the competition is less but i am disappointed with Demian Maia as he was gassed out in the first round and went on to loose the fight.

Time to hang the gloves up. He's had a great career already and i was surprised he even came back. It's been a long while and most fighters whose been away that long usually don't have it anymore. One of the best in the division and sad he didn't agree to a fight with anderson before but i think now.the dragon should call it quits

Machida still have a few fights left, he can still make a comeback but I don't think Dana White will allow him to headline another event or if Dana will book him again. Machida being absent in the MMA for quite sometime may have affected his performance. My total disappointment is with the outcome of Maia and Covington. Both fighters showed their skills but Maia somewhat looks tired in the 3rd round. Both tried to score by taking turns in trying to take down. I was rooting for Maia on this one.

Derek Brunson has knocked out many top notch MMA fighters in the 1st round. I don't think the loss means Machida is done.

The sequence leading up to the finish was Brunson ducking down and throwing a punch that came from far beneath Machida's line of sight where Machida couldn't see it coming. That could have finished anyone no matter how old or young they were. I had Machida winning the fight up until he got KO'ed. I think Machida could have another fight in the future the same way that Anderson Silva still fights even though everyone thought he might retire after losing to Chris Weidman 2x.

Colby Covington, Robbie Lawler, Stephen Thompson, Jorge Masvidal and a few others are likely in contention to fight Tyron Woodley for the title next. Its tough to see a clear favorite getting a title shot. There isn't anyone who is finishing their fights in impressive fashion. The fighter who finishes their fights is usually the one who fights for the title.

Next up is UFC 217: Michael Bisping versus Georges St Pierre @ Madison Square Garden, New York.

@Hydrogen or anyone. Who do you reckon Derek Brunson must fight next to be at a stage closer to challenge for the middleweight title?

There are 3 names ranked above him that might help him get there, Chris Weidman, Luke Rockhold and Anderson Silva. All 3 have won their latest fights and fighting Anderson again will give him a chance to retire another Brazilian that might revive his image.

Watched the reply on TV, what a punch hook from Derek Brunson finishes Lyoto Machida early in round one  . I think it's time for the dragon to retire he can't even breath a fire anymore, his prime is fading. Aging can't stop that slowed him and he doesn't have the speed to counter, was destroyed in the octagon, it's too much for me to watch as a fan. To be honest he it's time for him to leave the octagon, legend will be a legend.

@krach. Yes, a rematch versus Anderson would be my first choice if I was his manager or is agent. Assuming that Derek Brunson wins in a questionable way, like Anderson did in their first fight, then we will have another good trilogy!
