well, the cool thing about it is that it's the 8,000 BTU but only uses 650 watts.  it says 760 watts on the specification sheet I think but I hooked it up to the kill-a-watt and it was generally around 620-635 & sometimes going up to 650.  i didn't used to mine in this room but it'd get hot from the computer, anyway...   but now I mine on a 7950 + 7850 constantly + the computer itself (with 3 hard drives, tons of peripherals, etc, because it's my main comp) and a few other things (alarm clock/radio, etc).. probably about 1000 watts of heat.  i have 2 circuits in here, & I may end up moving one of my other machines in here..  it gets too cold, really.  i'm wearing a long sleeve shirt and some pants + socks and it's like 90o outside... the problem is the 'auto' mode isn't configurable and it doesn't drop until the room temp drops to 68o... and then it turns on the fan.. haha...   12x14 room, 168 sq ft.  you still have to hook the exhaust up to the window but it's not totally ghetto like some swamp AC.

my main problem with it was the dehumidifier tank was filling up too fast (northeast texas, etc)....  but I solved that by just putting the unit on a platform and hooking the hose up to drain into a big 5 gallon container instead of whatever it holds itself (probably just 1/2 a gallon or so).  it would fill up every 6 hours or so and shut off... this way, it just drains itself constantly and i only have to empty it every other day or so.

i'm pretty surprised, really.  most of the portable AC units get horrible reviews, but this one you'll usually see at 4 stars +..  I bought mine at Lowe's, but it's probably cheaper online somewhere....  you'd want to make sure you get the GB-PAC-08E4 model instead of the one that NewEgg has http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16896808095, that's the KY80, it has less dehumidifying capacity & uses more watts.  less efficient.  this is the good one:  http://www.lowes.com/pd_367199-37610-GL-PAC-08E4_0

Wow, that's good to hear.  Yeah you're right, I always saw not the greatest reviews on the lower BTU models.  I was looking at a 13,000 btu but have been on the fence because of the high power draw.  But if you say this model helps quite a bit, I might just grab one Cheesy

Good call on the model difference difference too, I didn't realize.  Smiley

Yeah, I was thinking about how I had just wasted $290 at Lowe's (had to pay sales tax) when I could have gotten it for much cheaper at newegg... then I noticed that 935 watts crap and also only 28.8 pints dehumidification vs  the stated 38.4 pints on the Lowe's 8000 BTU model...

btw, I just found this:

http://www.searsoutlet.com/8-000-BTU-Evaporative-Portable-Air-Conditioner-Dehumidifier-and-Fan/d/product_details.jsp?md=ct_md&pid=64284&mode=seeAll

WTF!!

even though it's the crap model, i'm considering buying another, haha (wonder how long a warranty they give on 'reconditioned' items?)

ahh, nm, the cheapest one within 50 miles of me is $220.  so not worth it.

If you are really cheap, just get a GE 5050BTU Window unit from walmart, for $100.

The GE unit I mentioned gets 4-5 star reviews on walmart. It is good in my opinion.

I think most people that are looking at portable ACs are unable to put one in the window for various reasons. Smiley

yeah, housing authority here won't allow the swamp coolers.  the portable exhausting out the window is quite a bit more discrete and wont lower property values like a bunch of people sporting swamp coolers will

anyway, that 8000 btu soleus was making my room too cold, so I brought in a system w/ two 6990's....  so now I'm generating about 1500 watts of heat in here and it can still keep it cold at night.  it does struggle a bit midday though, i'd say it gets up to 76o or so in here (95o outside).   i guess the next question would be if it can handle the abuse for more than a couple months
