Socket 775 for a mining rig

Ive got 2 old socket 775 mobos kicking around, both can be 5 card rigs with risers. Socket 775 2 and 4 core CPUs can be picked up on ebay with heatsinks for the price of afew beers. Coupled with 4 or 8gb ram and a usb flash drive, ive got 2 ready and waiting rigs.

No issues with socket 775 right?

nope I've got a couple core 2 duo e8500 rigs running great. i also had them around. finally found a use for my old stash, glad I didn't toss them out. probably could sneak by with even 2gb ram.

just need a stable low end system with a good PSU and expensive gpus.

Any motherboard with PCI-E slots should work. With older motherboards you need to make sure you only use PCI-E slots with risers. Many have PCI slots that look like a PCI-E slot and the riser will fit in the slot, but PCI uses a different voltage and WILL cause fireworks if you try to use it with a riser.

No issues here.
Been running this motherboard since conroe and Penryn came out and was my main computer until I started using it for mining.
Now it holds 3x 1060s and is rock solid.
Makes me around 100$ per month. No complaining for hardware that pays you to use it after 9 years.

Thats prettty obvious you cant use PCI in place of PCI-e

Just make sure its PCIe 2.0 at least.

If its PCIe 1.0 then some GPUs might not work.

PCI-E 1.0 should not be an issue, PCI-E 2.0 and PCI-E 3.0 specs are 100% backward compatable.

I did a lot of my early mining on AMD socket 754 Sempron based motherboards, worked fine - even the pair I eventually upgraded to NVidia 750ti cards (they were in small form factor cases).

I've ran a few 775 socket mobo rigs.  Not a lot of BIOS options to get all 5 pcie slots to work with risers, so don't expect too much out of them.

Im using gigabyte socket 775 with 3 x rx 470 gpu, until now works perfect without any problem, motherboard allready used 4 years and still ok

775 stuff is getting pretty cheap;  as is the 1366....

I think the last similar system I ran was SLAED which was socket 771 3.0Ghz 1333Fsb;  Which used to cost a premium, but they are a pretty reasonable price now.   I had a lot of cpu mining machines in the past that were either Dell Precision 690, or a similar dual processor equivalent.   They were all pretty rock solid and handled multiple GPU as well... you should look into them since the price of a cpu went from $150 to ~$30 each now and a good second hand precision 690 chassis can also be had for pennies if you have the right sources... ~80-100 average on ebay now for a tower.  Most have a minimum of 750w power supply, while some of them come with 1000w PSU's.  I had no problem fitting a GTX980 and 960 in this machine for a long time running full blast, as well as mining xevan back when it was a young algo.
