Also in the guardian:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/society/2010/dec/19/broadband-sex-safeguard-children-vaizey

And yet again all internet users collectively have to pay the price for the incompetence of certain parents.

Quote
60% of nine- to 19-year-olds had found porn online, while only 15% of computer-literate parents knew how to use filters to block access to certain sites.

In other words, 85% of computer literate parents are too lazy to spend 30 minutes researching and downloading a family filter (can it be that hard?).  If they really cared that much about their children seeing porn you would think that they would at least spend so much effort protecting them.

So if it's going to be a draconian solution, how about cutting off the internet connection of those responsibility-dodging parents for gross negligence, so that the rest of us internet users can just get on with our business?

creepy story.  wtf...

"We will not find a solution to political problems in cryptography, but we can win a major battle in the arms race and gain a new territory of freedom for several years.

Governments are good at cutting off the heads of a centrally controlled networks, but pure P2P networks are holding their own."

Governments want to control the internet the same way they control conventional media (TVs, newspapers etc).
They will get there, eventually.
I hope by then systems like Tor, I2P and others are the most user-friendly and widely known as possible, so all sort of "computer-illiterate" people can use them.

I doubt this is about porn.  This is about control.  Porn is just the Trojan horse (no pun intended) to get this ball rolling.

Next it will be wikileaks, then file sharing, then various 'intolerant' media, then Drudge, and pretty soon all we'll be able to access without asking permission is BBC, CBC and CNN.

And somewhere between file sharing and Drudge they'll block bitcoin.org

Exactly; porn is just an excuse to start this process. It should be purely parents' responsibility to install the filters. What if I want my kid to BE ABLE to watch it? Smiley

hehe
Not to mention that trying to block porn from a kid old enough to want it is quite useless... at this age, the kid will probably be smarter than his parents regarding technology, and will bypass any sort of protection.
Parental control protects only against accidental accesses, not intentional ones.

Exactly. I grew up with the internet and I may be scarred but I know how do deal with the rawness of an uncesored medium.  If anything it is my parents who need to be protected from stumbling across goatse.

It will become illegal just as soon as it can be detected. The detection doesn't even need to be reliable.

I'm sure all the sexual libertines on here are going to pound me for this but...
Just because something should be allowed, doesn't mean it is helpful for you.  Poke around here for awhile and read about neuroplasticity and how porn affects your mind:

A link to porn addiction curing centre ?

Just because somebody watches porn, does not mean he is addicted to it.
The same goes with everything. You can be addicted even to chocolate (some women are), but that does not mean that everyone who eats chocolate is addicted to it.
