Ever since the 0.8.2 I have been having major issues with it. It takes hours to open the program and the laptop is practically unuseable.

Now I'm getting "system error: Database I/O error "  that comes up whenever I open the program.

Also where has the bitcoin data directory moved to I can no longer find it in ~/library/application support/bitcoin because there is no bitcoin folder anymore....

It is a common myth that Bitcoin is ruled by a majority of miners. This is not true. Bitcoin miners "vote" on the ordering of transactions, but that's all they do. They can't vote to change the network rules.

Try installing the newest bitcoin client. If your referring to the bitcoin directory where the wallet.dat is located its by default in %appdata%/Roaming/Bitcoin

I've suddenly started having this same problem, both on a linux mint and a win7. I've backed up my wallet.dat and started both at command line with -reindex. Catching up on 5 years and 28 weeks now.
