I wouldn't store large sums on Coinbase. I'm sure that they are secure but you have to believe they won't be hacked or anything else. At one point in time, people trusted Mt. Gox and we all know what came out of this. So it's better to store funds where you have your private keys

I use myetherwallet for all my altcoins, it's practical and smooth in transactions.
And I also keep a TREZOR, cause I think that hardware wallets are more protected.

No online wallet is 100% safe from hacks. But, using multiple wallets is better than putting all your funds in a single one.

1.Web Wallets (Hot Storage)
             Easiest but the least safest.

2.Desktop/Mobile Wallets (Hot Storage)
Better than web wallets but depends on a 3rd party server.

3.Hardware Wallets (Clod Storage)
             Simply a USB dongle.

4.Paper Wallets (Clod Storage)
The private key printed on a piece of paper.

5.Other types of wallets
             Eg:-Meta Wallets,RFID enable chip

Should I just write it on a piece of paper? What do you guys use?

I would still recommend using a desktop purse, and do not forget that nobody can disclose the generate key
