Research is key here. Look into the altcoins you will invest in.
Start off with coins that have less risk of losing for example, Ethereum, Dash, Lite or Ripple and maybe consider investing long term.

Nobody will know future and that's why trading is always risk. Do not hold some altcoins for a long period and sell when they bumped. Hold bitcoins and etherium for a long period, because they are most stable and profitable now imho.

If you want to trade then you have to choose any volatile coin with strong tech and community
If you want to choose coins for middle and long term my advice is: Ark, OmiseGo, ETC, Zen, Verge.

Recently altcoins are not doing well due to the price rise of BTC and the fork. Altcoin prices should be recovering. However don’t get into coins that are pumping. The top 10 or 20 coins will be better.

Bitcoin is better to trade because there is more people willing to have that coin than just worthless altcoin.

There are many alts to choose from. If you want to play safe best is to invest in large cap coins, lets say among the top 50 coins that are at coinmarketcap website. If you can take some risk, invest in mid cap coins that are in 2nd page of the above mentioned website.

You should look for coin that already have the product, supported by the community, and at bottomed out for the past six months. Or check out the coin coming out new version, launch new technology

You can't really go wrong with the top ten coins. They are top ten for a reason and that is because people are already trusting them (therefore putting their money into them) and that means they have or are delivering constantly (system upgrades, protocol renewals etc.) "Best" is very subjective. Are you talking about investment wise best? Because if that is the case the well capitalized coins might not offer you the return you are looking for. If that's the case focus on ICO's which offer new tokens for very low prices (usually that's the best price you can buy them at). If you already have money and a fair portfolio to invest in the crypto world, go for altcoins that are mid-capped (top 20 to 60) and if you are well capitalized then invest in the top ten altcoins by market cap.

but small risk means you profit is small . People prefer small market value altcoin, it can easily x10 even x100.

from summer the market on alts got doomed due to bcc fork on august and afterwards btc is very unstable for alts (some alts like dgb,neo,xvg boomed in summer)

Due to the fact that Bitcoin again creeps up investing in altcoins is not very safe. Need to monitor the market. Personally, I'm watching the NEO, Qtum and Ambrosus.
