why does anyone ever perform identity fraud?

Identity theft is the deliberate use of someone else's identity, usually as a method to gain a financial advantage or obtain credit and other benefits in the other person's name.

in addition to what was said about his company's bitcoin related patents  and other theories I do believe that this was a plan so that he can advertise bitcoin cash which he did a little in the beginning but since from early days of this false claim the community acted wisely and also since this kind of proof is easily debunked, he could never pull it off successfully.

Simple answer, To earn more money from it, To use it for his personal propaganda and a tool for the power and authorship of this system claiming and declaring it as his patent. A clever but at the same time a desperate move for a businessman like him to claim such thing that anyone can do that.

Just read the white paper of bitcoin, study cryptography and you can do a self proclaimed drama that you are Satoshi the author of the very first cryptocurrency, the real one will never gonna reveal his/her identity to the public we don't also know if Satoshi is still alive or not.
