The old thread seems to be out-dated, so I'm making a new one. It's basically just been re-worded.

A common question that newbies will ask is: "Can I trust someone based on the amount of coins they have?", and the answer is that it is entirely up to you now. You are ranked based on a formula that looks at your posts over periods of time, so higher ranks such as Hero Members have usually used bitcointalk for at least a year while being active. While it doesn't guarantee they are fully trusted, it means they probably have some knowledge of Bitcoin and some trust in the community - if you have a lot to lose when trading, use an escrow service.

The regular ranks that regular users can earn are: Brand New, Newbie, Jr. Member, Member, Full Member, Sr. Member, and Hero Member.

There are also sub-ranks, which exist either to warn people of scammers or to show appreciation to someone who has donated to Bitcointalk. These are: Donator, VIP and SCAMMER. Donators and VIPs have access to a private forum, and are also able to change their user title. VIPs can also change their username. SCAMMERS have many restrictions, for example, they can not edit their posts.

Last of all, there are staff ranks for official Bitcointalk moderators and administrators. These are: Staff, Moderator, Global Moderator, Administrator, and Founder. Staff members can delete, edit and move posts, and have access to a special staff board, as well as the Donator board.

The activity number is determined using the following formula:
time = number of two-week periods in which you've posted since your registration
activity = min(time * 14, posts)

Activity is updated automatically every 30 minutes.

For instance, if I make 2 posts in one of the two-week periods, I will gain 2 activity.

Rank
Description
Tag
Brand New:0 posts, gets 1 gold coin under their name.
Newbie:Has made 1 post less than 4 hours ago, gets 1 gold coin under their name.
Jr. Member:1 post written over 4 hours ago, gets 1 gold coin under their name.
Member:Between 15-59 activity, and gets 2 gold coins under their name.
Full Member:Between 60-199 activity, and gets 3 gold coins under his name.
Sr. Member:Between 200-399 activity, and gets 4 gold coins under his name.
Hero Member:400 or more activity, and gets 5 gold coins under his name.

Sub-Rank
Description
Tag
SCAMMER:Manually applied by administration, regardless of post count and gets 5 red Xs under his name.
Donator:Manually applied by administration following a 10+ BTC donation, and gets 5 gold coins under his name
of which the last is half green. 5 coins are shown regardless of post count when user is a Donator.
VIP:Manually applied by administration following a 50+ BTC donation, and gets 5 gold coins under his name
of which the last is half purple. 5 coins are shown regardless of post count when user is a VIP.

Staff Rank
Description
Tag
Staff:Shown when moderators (see next point) post outside of the sections that they moderate.
Always shows 5 gold coins.
Moderator:Shown when moderators of specific sections post within those sections.
Gets 5 gold coins, of which the last is shown as half faded-out green.
Global Moderator:Applied to more experienced Staff that are able to moderate all boards.
Gets 5 gold coins, of which the last is half teal colored.
Administrator:Has all available permissions and can appoint moderators and perform other administrative tasks.
Gets 5 gold coins, of which the last is shown half red regardless of post count.
Founder:Reserved for Satoshi, the creator of Bitcoin, and gets 5 platinum coins under his name.

Excellent work, it would be a good idea to make it "sticky" so anyone can see it everytime
+1 for the sticky idea. Would save a lot of time for the newbies... and a lot of effort for us answering their questions.

The activity number is determined using the following formula:
time = number of two-week periods in which you've posted since your registration
activity = min(time * 14, posts)

Activity is updated automatically every 30 minutes.

For instance, if I make 2 posts in one of the two-week periods, I will gain 2 activity.

What does "min" stand for and why is their a comma between 14 and posts?  I seem too have missed something obvious and have no clue how activity is calculated.  Help would be greatly appreciated. (not in btc) Wink

min() is a function that takes the smaller of the 2 numbers (separated by a comma).
