Early autumn 2017 Airdrop was a concept to introduce a new blockchain but the tokens had to be in use by the community. ICO is a lot of work, so ByteBall decided: OK every who has 1 bitcoin gets X byte balls..

Airdrops continued in that fashion but since november december 2017 it turned more towards a reward for simple social media task, following twitter, joining telegram channel etc.. Now ICO's do an Airdrop before the private sale / pre-sales to generate awareness of the project, which they achieve by requesting airdrop participants to boost the ICO's social media platforms.

You could consider as reverse advertisement, you get to learn about the project and get paid for it.
I like this concept, though there are many fake Airdrops around which gather information with the purpose to sell them.

A good platform where airdrops are announced takes this in consideration.
