Has anyone heard of a hack or attempted hack on Bitcoin

sure, there was a kind of DoS attack on Bitcoin last week from Bitcoin Cash. They basically spammed the BTC network with 100k+ transactions driving the transaction fee up to 20$

People attempt to hack bitcoin everyday. All have lost and will never win. I think i will say todate bitcoin is unhackable.

Then there will be those who come to bitcoin.org to spam other people's posts... Just as hackers have failed hacking bitcoin, they will fail too.

Has anyone heard of a hack or attempted hack on Bitcoin

there has been lots of attempts to hack bitcoin, break the cryptography, find the private keys to an address (which is impossible), ... and lots of other types of attempts but all have failed. and will continue to fail because the cryptography that is used by bitcoin is unhackable.

don't listen to the idiots such as @freightjoe who are spreading FUD.

there has been lots of hacks of web wallets, online wallets with no security measures, exchanges and things like that. but none of these are "hacking bitcoin" itself.

To the people who have lost a lot of money it really does not matter what the technical details are. It really does not matter. fact is they bought bitcoin - they got hacked - the money was lost. End of story.

Techno-types like you always end up blaiming the user for anything bad that happens so you can protect your precious ivory tower.

Are you talking about hacks on individual wallets or attacks on the blockchain/devs etc themselves? Anyways, there have been a lot of different hacks, scams and all kinds of other things in the past. We are living in the wild wild west right now.  Shocked

Hackers are just right there waiting for a chance for the right guess of the secret codes. But this is only intended  for personal accounts. Bitcoin System hacking is very rare as hackers knew that its suicide for them. Bitcoin system established with all protection that makes it hard for the hackers to manipulate.

That's not surprising. This is a common situation. One of my friends has been hacked into 10 bitcoins. Hackers hate people, we have to do a good job of wallet backup, try not to use paper wallet, it is easy to leak passwords and keys. My advice is to use the hardware wallet as much as possible.

You need to somehow distinguish between Bitcoin and Blockchain. Blockchain is merely a technology, and can't be hacked as such. Though security may get compromised. However, I'm having a really hard time imagining this will ever happen. Whether or not Bitcoin has been attempted hacked. I have no idea. What I do know, however, is that if anyone should every succeed in hacking Bitcoin core systems, they'd end up with a lot of bitcoins that, by then, would be completely worthless. So a hack of Bitcoin, would render the currency completely worthless, thereby eliminating anyone's desire to do it. People looses their wallets to hacks, disk crashes and the likes all the time. But that's probably more fair to say, that Windows, Linux, Mac OS etc. was hacked, and data stolen.

No one is blaming the user. It's just that saying that "Bitcoin has been hacked" is misleading and exactly the kind of misinformation that leads to people not properly protecting their cryptocurrency holdings. It shrouds the issue in ignorance and therefore disrupts any meaningful discussion about it.

How are you going to hack bitcoin if the confirmation of each transaction is coming from all of the users of bitcoin? Or are you pertaining to the hacking incidents that happened to some exchanges that only means that what they attacked was the exchanges but not the block chain technology that bitcoin uses.

Hacking is everywhere, maybe bitcoin is being attacked by hackers from time to time but I never heard of a successful hacking on bitcoin. There where news that their bitcoin was stolen  by other people but it was not stolen on the block chain. We can say that bitcoin was hacked when someone was able to get a bitcoin from a transaction or bypass the confirmations on the block chain but for now all the hacking incidents was a fault on the end of the users.

Has anyone heard of a hack or attempted hack on Bitcoin

You have to be more precise with your question. Do you mean either 1) Bitcoin/Blockchain itself being hackable or 2) Anything related to BTC (including your stored btc) being hackable?

1) Bitcoin itself is not hackable in any way. BTC is "just a code" running on a lot of distributed computers around the world. There are no flaws and also no vulnerabilities which could be exploited.
2) Wallets, your pc (containing your coins), exchanges, websites (containing btc in any form) are always "hackable" (or to be more precise: they are vulnerable to exploits). You won't get 100% security in wallets, web applications, ...

If you store BTC's right and use your common sense when transacting with bitcoins, you (and your btc's) won't get "hacked".
I hope this clears things up. If i missunderstood you, feel free to awnser with a more precise question.

Has anyone heard of a hack or attempted hack on Bitcoin

If we talk of hacking incidents that target huge and famous Bitcoin wallets and hacking of the Bitcoin blockchain itself, I think there is none. But if we talk of individual Bitcoin owner's accounts being hacked, there are so many of them. As a matter of fact, somewhere there is a statistical data showing that more than 50% of the Bitcoins circulating today is stolen. I cannot confirm such news but it is what is presented.

Bitcoin can't get hacked, it's a distributed ledger... It's like hacking a book containing a bunch of records about transactions, it's worthless. But users can get hacked, and that's how people steal coins: through phishing sites, trojan hacks, malwares and many other ways. Keep yourself safe at all times!

Thank you all for your discussion. I understand that the framework cannot be hacked however personal interaction can compromise security. I was asking for a friend who has to clarify where he got the news. His wording made it seem as if it was not a service provider.

yes anyone of us heard that. bitoin can be hack because it is online and anything online can be hack and attack by virus or ,malwares or phising attepmts, thats why it is advisable to transfer your bitcoins to an offline environment (i.e cold storage) like hardware wallets or offline computers, devices, gadgets, etc as long as it can install and run a bitcoin wallet.

Many of these things happened. But one of these attempts has not been realized. Because they have a hard time hacking the bitcoins, the number of its code and the depth of the vein is so hard, so no one can manipulate bitcoins because it's decentralized. Depending on whether Satoshi Nakamoto will delete it. Because sure the crypto is in disarray

Bitcoin itself can't be hacked (blockchain 101, for a block being altered you should alter all other previous blocks and mine them, which is impossible). However websites can be hacked or spoofed so you need to be very careful when managing crypto and never, ever, share your private keys or keep them in your computer.

Yes its true everything that can access through online is hackable. It so happen that hacking bitcoin account is profitable than any other sites. So bitcoin is more prone to hackers, so for us being a traders of bitcoin we must be feel awared and make our coin wallets secured enough to prevent it being hacked.

Bitcoin (the blockchain technology) can't get hacked, unlike Ethereum's smart contracts (which are also not a hack to the coin, but to badly written code built on top of the platform). The users, however, can lose their coins in many different ways if they're not secured enough (phishing sites, losing private key, for example)

Bitcoin itself cannot be hacked, barring a massive, monumental breakthrough in quantum computing. There may be people working on this now, but they obviously haven't succeeded, or they'd be swimming in Bitcoins just from the dormant wallets. I say dormant wallets because it would be better for them not to disclose the hack, as it would cause the price to plummet.

Users can be hacked, however. If you're not using an exchange, you're likely the weakest link in your Bitcoin's security. Most hacks rely on user error; whether that be being careless enough to catch a virus, or stupid enough to fall for a phishing attempt.

All in all, Bitcoin is perfectly secure, but users can only be as secure as their precautions. There are no magic, hollywood-type of hacks in Bitcoin thefts, only user carelessness.

-snip-

this is an extremely misleading article that you shared here and forgot to share the link to source of it.
https://www.investopedia.com/articles/investing/032615/can-bitcoin-be-hacked.asp

first of all the "recent network security" that author is talking about are the hacks that happened years ago in 2014 and 2013 and none of them have anything to do with "network security" but with "third party security", exchanges such as Bitstamp hack in 2014, Mt. Gox scam in 2013, Bitcoinica in 2012. these are all third parties that scammed people and most probably not even hacked. even if they are hacked, it is not "network security" at all.

Has anyone heard of a hack or attempted hack on Bitcoin

i think the meaning of hack here is stolen from his wallet because i heard the news and even news from here which saying that his bitcoin is stolen by someone. i think its because from himself which is not careful to save the private keys and let other people know how much bitcoin he have. so this will attract other people to trying to steal his bitcoin and some of them is success to steal. we need to be careful to keep our private keys from other people and we need to save in the hidden place.

If you're talking about the main Bitcoin being hacked not the ones in each people wallet then i think there aren't so many people who dare to try hack bitcoin, hacker know that it's almost impossible to hack bitcoin although theres a slight chance maybe 20% out of 100 but they know that it will take a lot of money and it will gonna take a long time before they can hack bitcoin because bitcoin itself is a server each bitcoin is a system that almost every seconds it's encryption code change without any pattern. But i'm still not saying that bitcoin can be hacked but for me bitcoin really is ssecure..

I think this is old news, there have been so many attacks on Bitcoin in recent years this is the reason why so many forks has been happening, just be sure that you keep your wallet secured and your private keys safe while developers are doing their best to protect bitcoin.

Has anyone heard of a hack or attempted hack on Bitcoin

There maybe attempts to hack bitcoin and the block chain technology in the past but all was unsuccessful. The block chain technology that bitcoin is using is impossible to be hacked since it doesn't have one particular server, every users are included in the network that is why it is too difficult for hackers to compromise it. There were hacking incidents that occur on several exchanges and bitcoin were stolen from its owners, but we can't consider that as a successful attack to bitcoin.

maybe you mean wallets hacked, bitcoin per se is unhackable, with its sophisticated algorithm, it is impossible to hack the whole main frame of bitcoin itself, im sure with this huge assets, they have great wall for any hacker to penetrate bitcoin system, just trust the system.

I never heard anyone claiming that their bitcoin get hacked some instances where people failed to remember their authentication code that's why they bitcoin were gone but hacking bitcoin account issues so far is not a problem today. The wallet we are currently using are good storage. But just in case I didn't keep much of my bitcoin I always convert them and transfer to my bank account for assurance.

Rising value of bitcoin has increased a risk of getting bitcoin wallet hacked.  bitcoin has its own security system blockchain which is almost difficult to break or hack. To hack this blockchain  one has to hack more than 51% bitcoin using terminals spread all over the world. Instead these hackers hacks the mobile wallet . Security of mobile wallet lies in the hand of its user. Its duty of the owner to use only recommended mobile wallet. Wallet has to be secured with updated firmware and antivirus. Hackers are active all the time, we must not share our passwords, private keys with anyone. Do not click on any unknown links or open unknown emails. Every year many mobile wallets gets hacked and bitcoins get stolen.

For something with this kind of value, every hackers would love to get it for free and it is really prone to hacking attempts. The blockchain technology already proved that it is un hack-able that is why hackers are targeting exchanges and wallets. It is everyone's responsibility to secure their own wallet to avoid Bitcoin being stolen.

I haven't heard about it, could you link me to your reference in form of an article? I suspect that the coins are not hacked because of the way Bitcoin is build but actually a human mistake. A lot of people store their Bitcoins in web-wallets that are not properly configured and don't use the recommend security measures. To everyone that recognizes themselves, please do proper research to the capabilities Bitcoin has. Web-wallets are not the only way to store your Bitcoin and if you decide to use a web-wallet make sure that you use good security measures.

-snip-

this is an extremely misleading article that you shared here and forgot to share the link to source of it.
https://www.investopedia.com/articles/investing/032615/can-bitcoin-be-hacked.asp

first of all the "recent network security" that author is talking about are the hacks that happened years ago in 2014 and 2013 and none of them have anything to do with "network security" but with "third party security", exchanges such as Bitstamp hack in 2014, Mt. Gox scam in 2013, Bitcoinica in 2012. these are all third parties that scammed people and most probably not even hacked. even if they are hacked, it is not "network security" at all.
Well I believe that it’s not possible that bitcoin can be hack because bitcoin is now very meatier and it know how to protect itself from hackers because bitcoin is a digital currency it its connected with internet so hackers also using internet to hack something so for bitcoin it’s very easy to trace someone although bitcoin is decentralized but I believe there is someone who is going to monitor bitcoin and they are defending bitcoin in any forum.

Bitcoin is inherently designed to be hack-proof, which is the fundamental revelation of the Blockchain technolgy in that the only way to hack it is to control over 50% of the hashrate and if that happens then Bitcoin would die, but realisticallyit will not happen becuase it takes too much money to make it happen and mining is a global initiative now.

Are you talking about hacks on individual wallets or attacks on the blockchain/devs etc themselves? Anyways, there have been a lot of different hacks, scams and all kinds of other things in the past. We are living in the wild wild west right now.  Shocked

I also still try to understand which hack does he mean? Hack to wallet or blockchain?
If blockchain i will say it is not hackable. But if wallet hack, there are many issue about it out there since they are not aware to security.
We must put security in first of all amd use 2FA is recommended.
