I will agree with the author, and I have somewhere met the same information. To my mind, Ethereum has almost equal chances with Bitcoin. Litecoin is also a cool crypto, and it is underestimated. I love DASH as well.
Litecoin even better than bitcoin fork coin but that was not so good as you said. how the litecoin development will always be following the bitcoin. It looks the litecoin just a lite version from the bitcoin itself.
How dash comes with its master node and a lot of the new coin was following the dash.

Excerpt from: investopedia.com/tech/6-most-important-cryptocurrencies-other-bitcoin

"Bitcoin has not just been a trendsetter, ushering in a wave of cryptocurrencies built on decentralized peer-to-peer network, it’s become the de facto standard for cryptocurrencies. The currencies inspired by Bitcoin are collectively called altcoins and have tried to present themselves as modified or improved versions of Bitcoin. While some of these currencies are easier to mine than Bitcoin is, there are tradeoffs, including greater risk brought on by lesser liquidity, acceptance and value retention. Since Bitcoin prices are soaring new highs, we look at six cryptocurrencies, picked from over 700 (in no specific order) that could be worth your while.

If we talk about cryptocurrencies, which already have working technology and application in practice:
1) Litecoin
2) Waves
3) Etherium
4) Dash
5) NEM
6) BitShares
I do not take into account such as Ark, Lisk, IOTA, Stratis, Qtum, OmiseGo and others, because they have not shown their suitability.

Important?  Link is just a list of the largest and posters above are going same direction.  Why is Litecoin or Dash important when there a dozen other coins that could do the same thing?  Ethereum was important in broadening the scope of blockchain, now perhaps some of its prodigy are important.

Important crypto's should be those that deliver solutions to real problems. For example Civic giving a new way to authenticate between different systems and countries.

IOTA because it solves all current btc problems:

-No miners (who have too much power in btc)
-No fees (which are too high for btc)
-More users means faster transactions (Exponential scalability) (bitcoin could in best case scale linear if block size would be increased)
-German Foundation with access to >100 million dollar funds (btc devs need money from blockstream and don't act indepently any more)
-Foundation members including influential people in old and new economy. (btc: none)
-Partnerships with big names in industry (Bosch, Samsung, Microsoft, Accenture, Cisco etc)  and academia (UCL, Berkeley etc) (see here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Iota/comments/7f3dmx/list_of_known_iota_partnerships_corporate/) (btc: none)
