everyone could hold coins and tokens as long as they desire as some of the crypto investors are investing cryptocurrencies and choose to hold them as long-term investments and some crypto investors are investing long time ago like 3 years ago around 2014-2015 that until today they still didn't open their wallets even though they're even earning higher rewards and earnings.
I am holding my altcoins for almost a year but this month I choose to sell some of my coins to cover some of my expenses.

You can hold for a long time, you can even leave it there for more than 5 years but the value is tied with the success of the project. If the project is great and they keep growing in one or two years then of course the value of the token that you hold will increase but if the project fail and stop midway, your token will become useless that's why it's very important to monitor your investment, so you know what's the future of the project is gonna be.

Well, you can hold your investment for as long as you want but then you need to understand that you need to keep an eye on the market as well. Do not hold till eternity and then the next thing you know is that you are one of those left over bag holders. It happened to me when I started, I got attached to a coin so much that even when it was ath, I just couldn't let it go and then the next thing I realized was that I did make a good amount of coins but the value reduced. In my own point of view, yes you could hold your altcoin for a year inside your wallet just like bitcoin but the problem is if the volume of a coin becomes low you might sell it in a very low price, so its much better not to hold your altcoins in long enough inside your wallet.

It will depend on many factors. But one thing you should aware is, you can't just leave it. You have to update with the recent news related with the development of the project from the coins you hold. Otherwise, if the swap occur and you failed to catch it on time, sure your token will be worthless!
