Language barrier is not that great in Japan. Some of my friends are studying there, and they have told me that most of the people know English. But still, it is better to learn Japanese in order to travel to the rural areas. And in Japan, the problem is that it is extremely difficult for the expats to learn the Japanese language, as it is very complex.

Why learn English when it is so difficult? Well, knowing English will make you bilingual and more employable in every country in the world.

It's not really hard. All you have to do is read and read and read. Make your vocabulary deeper and construct simple sentences one by one.

Good point there. I personally applied this approach too. Reading a lot of English texts to have a big grasp on the English vocabularies and sentence construction; however, just as it would be expected of any rich language, I would say it almost takes a lifetime to master English. You keep learning it,  because news words are even being coined year in year out. It never stops growing.
