Question: So nobody likes a sports coin or a religion coin, but there has to be a mass appeal coin which would draw millions.  So how about SantaCoin?  (Voting closed: July 15, 2013, 07:23:44 AM)
SantaCoin is awesome - 3 (8.6%)
Not crazy about it but I'd mine or invest in it - 0 (0%)
I'd mine it but never invest in it - 2 (5.7%)
Another really stupid idea - 26 (74.3%)
I agree we need a namebrand mass market coin but this ain't it, keep trying - 4 (11.4%)

Thanks for your input.  I disagree. I think bitcoin has too many things lacking but I give it props for creating a whole new industry.

"I don't see anyone but techies buying coins for their features and most features can be turned on at any point via a hard fork so its not really a big issue."

So which is it?  No one cares about features, and they can always be added later, but bitcoin doesn't have enough features?

Profit-Switching Pool w/ Vardiff -> http://hashco.ws  Optionally keep the alts we mine or auto-trade for BTC. In addition can be paid out in any of: 365, AC, BC,  BTC, C2, CINNI, COMM, FAC, HBN, MINT, PMC, QRK, RDD, WC, XBC

If your looking for something that gets people with the name, then make the coin I have been wanting to mine.  "Itchy and Scratchy Coins"  Religion and Santa don't bring people the way a good show like the Simpsons does.  Plus it relates to something that already existed on TV.  Kind of similar to the Bottlecaps I am currently mining with the Fallout theme.

That won't work.  Trademarks.  It's pretty tricky finding a name in the public domain.

Techies care about features.  The masses obviously don't care or they'd jump from bitcoin to PPCoin or another coin with way more better features.

I'm talking about the MASSES, that's who's coming for dinner after the bitcoin ETF.

But don't get me wrong, if I would launch a coin I'd look for the best cutting edge features at the time to make it the best possible.  But not so much cause I think people will drop bitcoin for it, that's just not happening but simply because doing hard forks later sucks and if you're gonna do something make it the best you can.

But all the features in the world won't get your coin to even 50 cents.  If you look at litecoin and bitcoin it was pure timing and chance.  Whatever people decide to jump on next - herd mentality which is why a great name is so important. People buy what they know.

What are the features of the coin? If it's just another scrypt clone I don't see the point.

When the masses come in next year they're gonna buy into ideas that either sound good or ideas they agree with.  Some will buy a coin just cause it sounds cool or its associated with someone famous or has a good rep.  Hardly anyone is gonna ask well, does this one waste less energy than this one and are the transactions on this one faster than on bitcoin.

Very good point.

However, they are going to want and demand ease of use.

If they all have to download a block chain to make use of the coin, then the deal is off!

Exactly. Give them a normal banking app or an exchange, they don't actually want their money on their own drive at home where they are responsible for backing it up and keeping burglars away from it and not browsing suspicious sites and not installing trojans and worms and all that geeky crap.

Just get massive insurance on an exchange and have them use the exchange as online wallet, with all their deposits insured.

Also the whole blockchain expense can also go, it too is not needed, just offer them hundreds of limited edition "financial instruments" they can jump on like tulip bulbs when they see how other people jumping on them drives them up in price due to that clever limited edition feature, and bob's your uncle, no miners needed, that saves the victims uh I mean users vast sums right there, miners are an expense that is utterly not needed.

Absolutley agree, Mark, but I think by next year, once Bitcoin gets its ETF that the really big banking, wallstreet money will come in and you'll see high end apps with secure wallets for all kinds of coins.

Once the big devs are convinced Bitcoin is no longer a fad they'll start making serious apps so there's gonna be one push miners for your iPhone and built-in secure wallets on your Android or iPhone NFC phone.

So by then there won't be a need to keep your wallets in an exchange although that will be a viable options for some.  hence the $5 Million invested by a huge San Fran VC in CoinBase, that's one secure exchange, and it has an awesome and very secure APP, but it's still a hassle compared  to having it on your NFC phone.

You think that's crazy, the same nutjob who came up with both of those was actually full-serious about launching CatholicCoin.  thank God he had the sense to run some polls and actually took some sound advice from the many here who were puking on their screens.

I think you missed the sarcasm. Or maybe me.
Anyway, Allahcoin did a much better job.

But seriuoulsy, was there was there an Allah coin?  I thought about buying it but I was worried if I didn't give it I'd get some cute bow-tied bombs in the mail so I passed.

But they're a loyal bunch.  And if the ayotollah told them Allah said to buy just a few coins can you imagine?  1.6 billion buying just 3 coins each?  It would dwarf  it coin which is why I thought a religion coin would be so huge.  But you God haters did away with that one.

Thanks, noodle appendage guy.

That image kinda grosses me out like in a more than normal way but I can't stop looking at it.  Maybe there's something wrong with me and you just helped uncover it.  Great, that's all I needed in this utterly messed up 24 hours.

You missed only one tiny little but important thing. These "masses" are not brainwashed barbarians who will do what the medicine-man said. E.g. if we talking about muslims I would dare to say many (if not the most) of them are at least as good businessman as you, and quite quick to spot BS. Maybe -for the western eyes- they look a bit obsolete because of their code of honor but this is quite far from the reality when we are talking about business.
BTW I think the first wave of the "masses" who will jump into the cryptocurrency business will be a bunch of battle hardened day traders and investment agents/bankers looking for a new "niche" to exploit... usually these blokes eating guys like you for breakfast. The real masses will be the third wave after few years later. So be careful and keep breathing in the next few years Smiley.
