I have electrum and store my bitcoins on my computer.  I have not claimed my bitcoin cash nor bitcoin gold as the process seemed very hard.  But also because of those fake wallets i heard about.

The other thing is i don't have a spare computer to do this on.   The other thing is i plan to get a nano ledger s to store my bitcoins instead as people say always get a hardware wallet for your bitcoin.

So right now i have a few questions.

1.  If i'm planning to move my bitcoin from electrum to a nano ledger s.... would i need a spare computer to download electron cash and the other program to get bitcoin gold?  Also once i send the btc from electrum too nano ledger s, then there is nothing to worry about?  I was told by 2 people that they was able to claim their bitcoin cash on the same computer as their electrum that did not have a hardware wallet.  They said first thing they did was send btc from their electrum wallet to a new electrum wallet on the same computer.  Thus the old electrum wallet would not have anything on it.  Then they claimed their bitcoin cash on it and even mentioned they use electrum and electron cash on the same computer.  They said because they moved the btc from electrum to another electrum wallet, then its safe.  Can someone confirm here that this is true or not?

2.  If i don't buy a nano ledger s, would doing this still be fine?  The person mentioned he store btc is electrum only and didn't have a nano ledger s.  They said as long as the old electrum where you keep your bitcoin, you send the coins to the new electrum wallet, then you are fine.  Because even if the hacker were to get the seed, there are no bitcoins there.  Is that true or not?

3.  Are you allowed to use bitcoin cash and electrum on the same computer or not?  The thing is i don't want to get a new computer just for this process.  But if someone can confirm there is no issues with this, i won't get a new computer.  Also if i keep my btc in nano ledger s, is claiming the bitcoin forks easier than having btc in electrum.

Even if you use Bitcoin through Tor, the way transactions are handled by the network makes anonymity difficult to achieve. Do not expect your transactions to be anonymous unless you really know what you're doing.

1. Yes, before claiming your BTG and BCH you have to move your Bitcoin to a new brand wallet, it can be a new Electrum wallet, a new Ledger Nano S wallet or whatever, in any case you have to move completely move them to a new wallet, and you will have BTG and BCH on the old wallet without the Bitcoin on it

2. Can you elaborate better? If you are talking about the new wallet with the BTC on it and not BCH and BTG you will need a new wallet, doesn't matter if Electrum or Ledger Nano S, that's up to you, but it's preferable the Ledger Nano S or a offline machine with Electrum and most of all don't have the BTC wallet on the same machine where you will have BTG Core and Electron Cash wallets, just for security reasons, but that's up to you

3. Yes, you can, but it's not good to have a Electrum Bitcoin wallet on a computer costantly online, again, for security reasons

1. Hi there okay thanks because everyone says first send your btc from old electrum wallet to somewhere else.

2.  I meant if i do not get a nano ledger nor do i use a spare laptop, can i claim my bitcoin cash/gold on the same computer without any issue?  Of course i would create a new electrum wallet, send the btc from the old one to the new one.  Then i download electron cash and/or the program to claim the bitcoin cash/gold.  Then once i claimed it, i would have bitcoin cash in electroncash... bitcoin gold in ... what program?  Is it also electron cash or not?   And i would have bitcoin in my new electrum wallet.  Would this be fine?  Thus from then, i would have bitcoin in the new electrum wallet, and bitcoin cash and gold on the other wallet.  Is that fine or not?  A few people mentioned they claimed their bitcoin cash this way without using a second computer.  They said because they sent the btc to the new electrum wallet, they are not exposed anymore.  I believe they said they still used the bitcoin cash wallet on the same computer as electrum.

3.  What is more important here?  Getting a nano ledger s or a new computer?  If i get a nano ledger s, then send btc from electrum to nano ledger.  I would have bitcoin cash and gold on my computer.  But would i still be able to use electrum or not?  Is there any security risk at all?  You said in the last line don't do that?

2. Yes, you are right on everything, the most important thing is that you move your Bitcoin to a new wallet, you choose Electrum or Ledger Nano S

The only reason I said don't store BTG and BCH on the same computer is because as you can see Bitcoin Gold and Electron had a security problem with their wallet that stole a lot of Bitcoin to users so it's just for security reasons to not use BCH wallets and BTG wallets on the same computer.
Electron Cash for now seems fine but you never know, for BTG I recommend you using Coinomi if you have Android (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.coinomi.wallet) instead of BTG Core Wallet so you can avoid to download the full blockchain.
It's now up to you

Hi thanks for that information.

I'm confused with what you mentioned.  So the computer that you claim bitcoin cash.. you can also use it to claim bitcoin gold right?

For bitcoin gold, you obviously have to put in that seed to get it.  So you telling me people that claimed bitcoin cash first did the process of installing bitcoin cash on another computer.  But of course move the btc from the electrum to new electrum first.  Then when they claim their bitcoin gold, they input the old phrase from the electrum wallet inot either coinomi or btg core wallet to get it?  The thing is i dont have an android so the only way is to download btg core wallet to get bitcoin gold?  But those people that claimed bitcoin gold on btg core wallet, they are doing this on the computer that they did the electron cash on right?  Also on the spare computer, its safe to use electroncash and bitcoin gold wallet there?

Another thing i want to ask.  But could a chromebook be used as a second laptop or not?  Because chromebook use google os as oppose to windows etc.

Has anyone here used a chromebook as a computer for electrum and any other altcoin wallets they have?  And if so, is that good idea or not?

Also is this fine then?

Get a nano ledger s?  Send all my bitcoin from electrum to nano ledger s.  Then delete electrum on my computer.

Then download electron cash on the same computer as my main computer.  This computer is where i do everything else though.. financial transactions and use other cryptowallets.  Would that be fine or not?

What you need to realise is that when people say "you should so this" or "you should do that" or "it's OK to do this"... they are speaking from their point of view, and their own personal level of risk acceptance. It also seems that you a confusing the ability to do something with whether or not it is a safe thing to do... You ask "can I do X?"... when I think what you really mean is "should I do X?"

For instance:

CAN I use Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash and Bitcoin Gold on the same computer?
Technically... Yes. There is nothing stopping you from running a Bitcoin wallet, a Bitcoin Cash wallet and a Bitcoin Gold wallet on the same computer.

SHOULD I use Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash and Bitcoin Gold on the same computer?
That depends on a number of factors... do you have access to multiple computers or do you have one computer? do you value security more than convenience or do you just want your fork coins? are you extremely risk averse or you'll accept some risk to get things sorted quickly and easily?

The short version of getting your Bitcoin Cash and Bitcoin Gold goes something like this:

1. Move ALL your Bitcoin from your current Electrum wallet to a completely new Electrum wallet.
2. Use ElectronCash with your OLD (and now empty) Electrum wallet to get Bitcoin Cash.
3. Use [Some Bitcoin Gold Wallet] with the private keys from OLD (and now empty) Electrum wallet to get Bitcoin Gold

Now, people will recommend you take "appropriate" precautions to ensure safety of your coins like using a separate computer for each currency or using offline wallets etc... but none of that is REQUIRED to be able to get BCH and/or BTG... it is only RECOMMENDED to help minimise risk.

The thing is i dont have an android so the only way is to download btg core wallet to get bitcoin gold?
No, you can use the "Bluestacks" Android emulator and run Coinomi on that...

Hi there.

No i only have access to one computer.  The thing is i could buy another computer but my problem is that computer is not in english... its in another language.  Thus most of the computers here even though they are brands like dell, asus etc are in a different language.  So would that still be fine?

I 100 percent value security here.  But if people say as long as your bitcoin is not in your electrum old wallet, then that does make me feel okay.  Have there been cases of people who had their bitcoin cash/gold or any other wallets hacked on the computer they downloaded bitcoin cash/gold wallet on etc?  Im very risk averse here.  That is why i still havent claimed my bitcoin cash and gold yet.

In those steps you listed, would the bitcoin gold wallet program be used on the 2nd computer like with the electron cash?  Also do people who download electron cash on the 2nd computer... what do they do on the other computer then?  Do they use it to store bitcoin cash if they plan to keep it or buy more of it?  The bitcoin gold wallet would be downloaded on the 2nd computer as well right?

Well the thing is if i get a nano ledger s, then i send btc from electrum to it... then erase electrum on my computer... because i will no longer use it... then download electroncash on the comptuer and also the bitcoin gold wallet, would that be okay?  The thing is i have other wallets and do all my other important financial things on this computer though.  But that should still be fine?

I have an apple phone, i dont have an android.  I could claim my bitcoin gold on my iphone instead?

No idea... although I see no reason why the language are computer is set to should affect anything... there are plenty of russians and chinese and japanese and italians and germans and <insert other ethnicities here> all using bitcoins and other cryptocurrencies without issues... I doubt they're all using English on their computers Tongue

I never said use a 2nd computer... I didn't when claiming coins... and I haven't lost a single satoshi... I have Electrum, Bitcoin Core, BitcoinABC (Bitcoin Cash), ElectronCash, BitcoinGold Core, Byteball, Bitcore, Ledger and Trezor all on the same computer. I just took what I considered to be sensible precautions. I didn't rush, I took my time, I made sure to move my coins off the private keys before using those keys to claim the next lot of coins.

Theoretically, if you're going to be all paranoid about using a separate computer to prevent a rogue wallet from stealing other coins, you should use a separate computer for EVERY currency Roll Eyes

Why would you delete Electrum? I use Electrum with my Ledger Nano S... I prefer to use Electrum in conjunction with a hardware wallet as I feel it offers better features than the Ledger Chrome App Wallet or Trezor wallet app.

Absolutely no idea... If they have a Bitcoin Gold wallet on an iphone then sure... you can claim using your iphone... try searching google for "bitcoin gold iphone" or "btg wallet ios" etc

Hi there.  Wait so you claimed your bitcoin cash and gold on the same computer as your electrum?  I just want to make sure of this.

So when the bitcoin fork happened with bitcoin cash and gold, so your bitcoin was in electrum at that time?  But then afterwards you got a ledger and trezor?  Im confused why would you have electrum on your computer if you already have a ledger or trezor?

Well im definitely taking my time here.  Thats why i still havent claimed it.  But if you claimed your bitcoin cash and gold on the same computer and held btc in electrum at the fork, then i feel pretty comfortable then.

I was going to delete electrum because you said some people say its not good to have electrum and electroncash on the same computer.  So i figure if i get the nano ledger s. then i move the btc there.  Then once i do that, i could delete electrum.  Then i can install electron cash and there won't be electrum nor electron cash.  When did you get your ledger nano s?

So you claimed your bitcoin gold on the same computer?  Because if you did, im going to do that then.  But would there be any difference between you and me because even though you use electrum, its connected with a hardware wallet?  So if i get a nano ledger s, i should use it along with the hardware wallet as oppose to the ledger chrome?

In a word... yes.

Like I said... I use my Ledger/Trezor WITH Electrum. Effectively, the Ledger/Trezor is just a "tool" for signing transactions etc. It doesn't really contain any "wallet" functionality. You still need to use a "software" wallet like the Trezor web wallet (wallet.trezor.io) or the Ledger Chrome app (the somewhat confusingly named "Ledger Bitcoin Wallet" that you use for ALL coins except ETH and ERC tokens)... OR you can use a number of desktop wallets that also work with Trezor or Ledger... like Electrum.

I do it this way because I'm used to using Electrum, I like the UI and features... like the ability to specify custom fees, freeze addresses, coin control etc. I am comfortable with it and I know how it works.

I got my Ledger Nano S and my Trezor early Late August after the Bitcoin Cash fork. So, I claimed BCH from Electrum and Bitcoin Core. I claimed BTG from Ledger and Bitcoin Core... and have helped other people claim BCH/BTG from all sorts of wallets like Electrum standard\multiSig\2FA, MultiBit Classic and MultiBit HD, and Armory

Quote

That decision is totally up to you... I am not advocating one method over the other. I am just stating that this is how *I* claimed my coins. I'm comfortable that I took adequate measures to protect my assets while claiming coins. I read all the technical notes and made sure I fully understood the process and how it worked and the best way to do it for *MY* situation.

Like I said, different people want different things... this is why wallets like Exodus (which I personally dislike a LOT) have a userbase... a lot of people just want "one click" solutions to storing and exchanging their altcoins... so they go for a multicoin wallet. I looked at Exodus and was immediately put off by lack of opensource, the inability to set fees how I wanted them and even the ability to test the backup features of the wallet unless you actually deposited money!!?! Roll Eyes  However, for some people... it is the "greatest wallet ever made"™

So, you may not like Electrum as much as I do... you may prefer the look and feel of the Ledger chrome wallet... you may also prefer to use the Ledger Chrome as it means you can deal with all your altcoins etc... I don't really play with altcoins that much... I've accumulated a few here and there from people tipping with altcoins... but I'm essentially PRO-"Bitcoin" Wink

For the record... these are the wallets that have Ledger Nano S integration: https://www.ledgerwallet.com/products/ledger-nano-s#integrations

My advice is to try things out. Find a solution that works for you and go with it. Don't just blindly trust the advice of "RandomStrangerHCP"™ on the internet Tongue

Hey there thanks for the response.  Im confused here when you say you claimed BCH from electrum and bitcoin core?  You mean you had bitcoin in both your electrum wallet and bitcoin core wallet when the fork happened right?  Thus you claimed your bitcoin from electrum when using electron cash?  I got confused because i thought bitcoin wore was the bitcoin cash wallet you used to claim your bitcoin cash because i did not know bitcoin core is another bitcoin wallet.  I only heard of electrum, armory, exodus and few others etc.

Yes i read if you used ledger s or trezor, you still need to use a software wallet with it.

Oh no, I like using electrum a lot.  I honestly wouldn't mind using electrum only but i read people say you should not store btc in a desktop wallet and should always be in hardware wallet.  That is why im considering getting a nano ledger s for this reason.

Okay so if i claim my bitcoin cash on the same computer as my electrum, would you recommend me do this when i get my nano ledger s first or not if im planning to get one?  Because if i do get the nano ledger s, then i would be fine right?

Because right now what you tell me, the process for me to claim the bitcoin cash is pretty simple right?

Thus create new electrum wallet and send btc there.  Then download electroncash and then put the seed.  Then i have the bitcoin cash and im done right?

But if i get the nano ledger s first, it would be send btc to the nano ledger first... then download electroncash and then in put seed right?

The other thing im a bit confused is this.  So right now your btc is in your nano ledger s right?  So you obviously no longer use the old electrum seed anymore.  But since you use electrum with nano ledger s... are your any bitcoins showing in your new electrum wallet or not?  Because what has me confused is your btc is in your nano ledger right?  Then how is it possible for it to show on the electrum screen?  Or it doesn't?  And do you have a new seed for your new electrum now?   Because i know there is a 24 word phrase for the nano ledger s to recover your bitcoin.  So there is no seed for your electrum?  I know i sound confusing when i ask this but i assume you know what im trying to ask?

I like electrum a lot same as you... because you could set fees etc.  So based on that, i should do exactly what you do right after i get the bitcoin cash?

I tried exodus.  It looked nice but the issue is i heard the fees to send are huge for every coin.  So because of that, i don't want to use it.  So yes just like you, i like electrum a lot.

Bitcoin Core is basically the evolution of the "original" Bitcoin wallet... "Bitcoin-Qt"... https://bitcoin.org/en/bitcoin-core/

This is the "full node" wallet everyone talks about and which requires the 150Gig full blockchain download etc.

I had some coins in Electrum and some in Bitcoin Core... I used ElectronCash and "Bitcoin ABC" (which is the BitcoinCash version of Bitcoin Core) to get my Bitcoin Cash...

Quote
Because right now what you tell me, the process for me to claim the bitcoin cash is pretty simple right?
Thus create new electrum wallet and send btc there.  Then download electroncash and then put the seed.  Then i have the bitcoin cash and im done right?
But if i get the nano ledger s first, it would be send btc to the nano ledger first... then download electroncash and then in put seed right?
Either way is fine... I'd probably wait until you got the ledger, then you just do one transfer of BTC to your ledger... instead of a transfer to new Electrum wallet, then a transfer to ledger... with all the fees Tongue

Quote
The other thing im a bit confused is this.  So right now your btc is in your nano ledger s right?
No... the BTC is on the blockchain... my private keys that control the addresses the BTC are attached to are in my Ledger.

Quote
Your Ledger Nano S contains a "seed", from which it generates a "xprv" - Master Private Key... and a matching "xpub" - Master Public Key. From the "xprv" you can generate all the private keys (and public keys/addresses)... from the xpub you can ONLY generate the public keys/addresses

When you connect your Ledger to Electrum (File -> New\Restore -> Standard wallet -> Use a hardware device)... it will get the "xpub" ONLY from your ledger... this allows you to create a "watching only" wallet... which will show all your coins, addresses and transactions etc... but has NO PRIVATE KEYS. So it functions exactly like a normal Electrum wallet, you just can't spend... UNLESS you create an unsigned transaction and send it to the Ledger for signing.

Same as the Ledger Chrome app (and all other wallets that can be used with Ledger)... it just gets the "xpub"... and you can see all your coins, but unless a transaction is signed and approved by using the actual hardware device, you can't spend.

Even if someone steals your Electrum "ledger" wallet... they really can't do anything with it but see how many coins you have and who you're sending them to...  because all the private keys are safely locked up in your actual hardware wallet Wink

Hi there okay when you say bitcoin qt, i definitely heard of that.  Thats why im confused when you say bitcoin core.

Okay that makes sense with the ledger and waiting to get it.

So if your transfer your btc to your nano ledger s... even if you don't use electrum and use that ledger chrome... your btc is still on the blockchain?

So your ledger nano s contains a seed, just like how electrum does right?

So when you create electrum to your ledger, that means what shows currently in your electrum wallet is exactly what it would show when you use the nano ledger s with it.  But on your actual electrum program, you basically only have one address right?  Thus the old one from which you transferred the btc from?  Thus there is no 2nd wallet with its own seed?

Can you explain how would you send btc then when this process goes?  Would you be copying and pasting a btc address to the electrum wallet like you normally do?  Then you click okay send?  But once you do that, that will show up on the ledger s nano with the address and btc and then you look and confirm if its right... then you press okay?  But before this, don't you have to type or copy/paste the password that you put in electrum right before you send?  And if you do, is this a new password you create since its obviously not the old password from the old electrum wallet?  Its the password you create for ledger nano s right?

What do you mean exactly if someone steals your electrum ledger wallet?  Do you mean the computer or that file?  But if someone gets your ledger nano s, or both it and your computer, i believe they still need both your password to send the btc from nano ledger s and also a pin number right?

Also wanted to ask.. what other coins do you keep in your nano ledger s?  Also you are using the trezor as well?

Also do you own altcoins that are not eth, litecoin and the main ones that are traded with usd or usdt?

If so,  do you download wallet for each coin or do you keep it on the exchange?

Hi there okay when you say bitcoin qt, i definitely heard of that.  Thats why im confused when you say bitcoin core.
Bitcoin-QT is just one component (The GUI client) of Bitcoin Core... it also has a background service called "bitcoind" (aka "Bitcoin Daemon") and a command line client called "bitcoin-cli"... Collectively, they form the "application" known as "Bitcoin Core".

Quote
So if your transfer your btc to your nano ledger s... even if you don't use electrum and use that ledger chrome... your btc is still on the blockchain?
That is the whole point of blockchains. It is the immutable record of all bitcoin transactions. Whatever your actually wallet software says is irrelevant. The blockchain is the absolute authority on which address controls what bitcoin.

Quote
So your ledger nano s contains a seed, just like how electrum does right?
Yes... but unlike Electrum, you can't get access to it after it is initially displayed during the initialisation/setup process.

Quote

So when you create electrum to your ledger, that means what shows currently in your electrum wallet is exactly what it would show when you use the nano ledger s with it.  But on your actual electrum program, you basically only have one address right?  Thus the old one from which you transferred the btc from?  Thus there is no 2nd wallet with its own seed?
Huh

When you create a wallet using a "hardware device" in Electrum... it will read the "xpub" from the ledger. This "xpub" is a Master Public Key. Electrum will then use this to generate identical bitcoin addresses to the ones generated by the Ledger. So, it knows which addresses to monitor the blockchain for. When it sees transactions relating to these addresses it adds the information to the local copy of the wallet.

So, your Electrum "ledger" wallet will contain the xpub from the Ledger and a bunch of bitcoin addresses generated from that xpub... but no private key information. All it can do is "look" at your addresses/coins. Hence the term, "watching only" wallet.

You can continue to have normal Electrum wallets as well if you want... Electrum lets you have and use multiple wallets.

Quote
Can you explain how would you send btc then when this process goes?  Would you be copying and pasting a btc address to the electrum wallet like you normally do?  Then you click okay send?  But once you do that, that will show up on the ledger s nano with the address and btc and then you look and confirm if its right... then you press okay?
Yes

Quote
But before this, don't you have to type or copy/paste the password that you put in electrum right before you send?  And if you do, is this a new password you create since its obviously not the old password from the old electrum wallet?  Its the password you create for ledger nano s right?
No. It doesn't use passwords for Ledger wallets. It relies on the Ledger being connected and "unlocked" with the PIN. There is currently work in progress to allow Electrum to password protect "watching only" wallets.

Quote
What do you mean exactly if someone steals your electrum ledger wallet?  Do you mean the computer or that file?  But if someone gets your ledger nano s, or both it and your computer, i believe they still need both your password to send the btc from nano ledger s and also a pin number right?
The file. If your computer is hacked and the hacker has your electrum wallet file, they can't do anything because they need the ledger device to get the private keys. If they have your device as well, then they need your PIN (3 guesses and it gets wiped).

Also wanted to ask.. what other coins do you keep in your nano ledger s?  Also you are using the trezor as well?
Yes... I strongly believe in redundancy and backups.

Quote
If so,  do you download wallet for each coin or do you keep it on the exchange?
I don't keep anything on an exchange any longer than it takes to buy/sell. "If you don't control the keys, you don't control the coins" Tongue

Hi thanks for all that information.  Okay so that means its best to download wallets for every altcoin.

One other question.  So if you have electrum and someone has access to your computer, say a hacker, does that mean even though you have a password that you have to put down to send btc, that would not matter or not?  Because i have heard of electrum wallets getting hacked and others say it must be malware.

If you have a password on your Electrum wallet... then this means either all the sensitive info (like seeds and private keys) inside your wallet file are encrypted and/or that the WHOLE wallet file is encrypted (depending on if you ticked the "encrypt wallet file" box when you created the password).

If a hacker gets your password protected wallet file, then they will need to crack your password to do anything with it.

With a watching only wallet, if a hacker gets your wallet file, they can't do anything other than see your balance and transactions... there are no private keys or seeds stored in a watching only wallet. It is simply a collection of public keys/addresses. You could publish a watching only wallet online with 1,000,000 BTC in it... and no-one would be able to steal your coins Tongue

Hi there.  For electrum wallet, there are 2 passwords i believe.  One is the when you open electrum, you would have to input the password to see how many btc there are and the transactions right?  Thats the encrypt wallet file?  Then there is the one where when you send btc, you have to enter the password.  But these passwords has to be the same password or not?  And you suggest to encrypt the wallet file right?

Okay so for example.  If someone has their electrum wallet get malware on it.  Then why do i hear cases about electrum wallet or other wallets getting hacked then assuming they put a password on it?  Is it because the hacker cracked the password?  Because i thought if the hacker were to have access to your computer/electrum, they can't just download a trojan or program and then unlock the program like that?

Okay so the watching only wallet.  So with your electrum wallet right now connected to your ledger nano s, you have a password that you have to put that you need to type in before you can view your balance or not?  I assume no?  Thus when you open electrum, it shows how much btc you have and the history right there?  Thus because you are using electrum with nano ledger s, you cannot make it where you have to type in a password to open electrum right?

No. It has ONE password that does both.

Generally, this is people downloading FAKE versions of Electrum, importing private keys or seeds from other wallets... the fake wallet then sends this information to the thief (like what happened when people stupidly put their private keys/seeds into mybtgwallet.com).

It does not have a password on watching only wallets... it is a "feature request" that has been made and the devs are working on it apparently.

Hi thanks for your response again.  So for the one password only that does both, you would suggest people encrypt their bitcoin wallet for the first part right?  The one where when you open it, it would show the btc balance etc?  Also its easy to do and undo this on electrum?  Such as you turn the encryption on for looking at how much btc balance you have.. then unencrypting it and then back to encrypting it?

When you say importing private keys from seeds from other wallets, you mean from bitcoin wallet right?  Yes i heard about that with people trying to claim their bitcoin gold in that website you mentioned.  But as long as you aren't copying and pasting that key or seed, then it general then there would be no hack?

Okay one other thing.  So you say as long as you like using electrum and comfortable with it, you should use it with ledger nano s and avoid the chrome ledger app then right?  Im very used to using electrum and wouldn't really want to use another program etc.

Ok... so Electrum wallet has three levels of password protection/encryption:

1. No password - Wallet file and ALL of it's contents are in plaintext - NOT RECOMMENDED

2. Password/No File Encryption - The important parts (private keys/seed) of the wallet are encrypted, rest is in plaintext - MINIMUM RECOMMENDED LEVEL

3. Password/Wallet File Encrypted - The important parts (private keys/seed) are encrypted AND then the whole file is encrypted - HCP's RECOMMENEDED LEVEL

With 1. - Anyone who gets a hold of your wallet file, can basically take all your coins
With 2. - Anyone who gets a hold of your wallet file, will only have access to addresses and transaction info... private keys/seeds are still encrypted... not ideal, but it should slow them down long enough to move all your coins to safety (assuming you have a decent password 10+ characters/numbers/symbols etc).
With 3. - Anyone who gets a hold of your wallet file has access to nothing (assuming you have a decent password 10+ characters/numbers/symbols etc)

I personally recommend 3... for "normal" Electrum wallets.

When used with a hardware wallet... you (currently) DON'T GET TO SET A PASSWORD. You run at Level 1.

As for which software to use, like I said... try them all out. There is nothing stopping you from trying Ledger Chrome app, Electrum or any of the other compatible wallets until you find the one you like the best.

Hi there thanks for that information.  One last thing.  The most secure option.  You could basically change it from option 2 and 3 pretty easily if you want right if you already have one set?

Yes, you just goto "Wallet -> Password"... and then enter your current password... and then a "new" password (can actually be the same as your current password)... and tick the box that says "Encrypt wallet file"

HCP one last question.  If the nano ledger s stops working, you need the 24 word phrase that you wrote down from the nano ledger right?  Also is it always 24 words?

Also what if you cannot get another nano ledger s?  Could you restore it without it or not?

Yes, 24 words is all you need to recover to either another Ledger, a Trezor, a KeepKey or any BIP32/39/44 compatible wallet.

https://ledger.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/115005297709-On-which-wallet-can-I-restore-my-wallet-if-I-lose-my-Ledger-device-

NOTE: The list is a bit outdated... as you can definitely restore to Electrum now.

Hey thanks.  One other thing i want to ask you.

I spoke to a guy who recently just got the nano ledger s.  He tells me he is currently using it with the chrome.  He said he is doing this way because he is just looking for a place to store his bitcoins and not move it around.  He says if he wanted to move bitcoins, he would just leave it in electrum.  The thing is the way he said it, it seemed like he meant he wanted to keep his btc in a secure place like a nano ledger but mentioned the nano ledger isn't really for sending btc a lot.  He is incorrect with this right?  He also said you can't set fees like you could on electrum... is he correct on this or not?  Because that would seem ppl who use nano who pay lot of fees?

I mentioned to him someone said they are using it with electrum as oppose to the ledger.  But im surprised he is using it with chrome?

Hey HCP i just thought of something else.  If someone wants to own say 10+ coins... especially those that aren't supported by the nano ledger s and you have to download your own wallet, would it actually be better to buy a separate computer such as even a chromebook or small laptop solely to store these cryptocurrencies?  For example you could have 20+ wallets on the computer and the only thing you do on it would be to send/receive coins?

The other thing besides that would be of course your bitcoin exchange account and do that only on that computer.  Would you say that would also work as well?  But if someone was to have access to your laptop where you have say 20 different cryptocurrency wallets, as long as you encrypt each wallet, then you should be fine?  Thus you only download wallets and do transactions on that computer along with using the exchanges?  Thus no watching youtube or visiting any other sites at all.

Would you say that would also work?  Because if you have a few coins that ledger nano doesn't allow storing, then you still have to use that wallet on your regular computer right?

The nano s is made to be used a lot. For (only) a cold storage a paper wallet would be enough.
A hardware wallet is made out of the purpose to being able to access your coins at any time and always perfectly secured.
The native ledger wallet (chrome-) app does have the ability to set fees either for slow, normal, fast confirmation or you can set them mannually.

If someone wants to own say 10+ coins... especially those that aren't supported by the nano ledger s and you have to download your own wallet, would it actually be better to buy a separate computer such as even a chromebook or small laptop solely to store these cryptocurrencies?

This definetly would be better than just storing them on your everyday-pc. Depending on how much money you store on this pc and how secured your wallet has to be,
the ideal case would be if this pc never had a connection to the internet. A trezor/keepkey is also just a minicomputer.

This depends on 1) the encryption algorithm and 2) the password used to encrypt your files. With a non-broken encryption algorithm and a strong(enough) password your files are considered to be safe.
It doesn't matter whether you use this pc to only download wallets or safe youtube too. As long as it is connected to the pc there is always a risk of getting infected by malware.
Higher amounts (which you don't want to lose) should be stored offline for ideal security.

Hi there thanks for that information.

But what if you have wallets that are not compatible with the nano ledger s?  Would it actually be a good idea to get separate computer for those coins?  But a ledger nano for the main coins?

I"m confused with what you mean connecting to the internet.  So electrum doesn't connect to the internet?

HCP, what happens if the nano ledger malfunctions and you need a replacement?  Also don't these need replacement eventually as they cannot last that long?

Most importantly, would it be possible to recover your bitcoins/altcoin on a computer if you cannot buy another nano ledger s?  Or would you have to get a replacement?

The above info was very helpful and I am hoping someone can answer this question.

I need to claim my BCH (it was in my Electrum wallet at the time of the Aug 1 fork). However, I moved it to my Ledger Nano S thinking that it can split my BTC/BCH. This is apparently only possible if my BTC was in my Ledger wallet at the time of the fork (which is was not).

I transferred my BTC from my Electrum wallet to my Ledger Nano S but I then permanently deleted my Electrum wallet from my PC because I switched PC's for (security purposes).
I do have backups of my Electrum wallet (if that helps) but these were made before I moved my BTC to my Ledger Nano S.

Can I gain access to the required private keys on my PC or from my Electrum backup? In order to finish claiming my BCH on Ledger Nano S. Any help is appreciated!

That's good enough. Your Electrum wallet/seed never changes. It doesn't matter if you moved the funds or made any new transactions. Backup once and you are done!

Just download Electron Cash[1] and open your Electrum wallet file with it. Then, send your BCH to your Nano S.

OK thanks but I am a little confused. What part of my back up am I supposed to use? The wallet file or the program shell?

The program shell I believe can only be re-installed from a download (even if I have a copy on my backup USB drive) and if that's the case it would be a fresh install and would not have my private keys

Are you saying download a new Electrum wallet and recover my wallet with my seed phrase?

If so, then how does Electron wallet play into this sequence?

What exactly did you backed up?

Electron Cash looks exactly like Electrum. If what you backed up was the wallet file, just select it in Electon Cash like you always did with Electrum when opening your wallet.

Ok I understand. I do have the wallet backed up on a USB drive. But the backup was made when I had BTC in it. I since sent my BTC to my Ledger Nano S from my wallet that was on my PC.

So what will happen when I go to my old backup Electrum file (from my USB drive) that was made when I did have my BTC in it?

Nothing will happen. Like I said above, you backup once and the file will be the same forever. There is no such thing as "old backup" with Electrum.

Your coins are not stored in the file. You don't have any BTC but the BCH is still there in the blockchain, waiting to be spent. Do like I said and you will see your BCH balance.

I assume that because my BTC is already in my Ledger Nano S (BTC wallet) that using this risky Electron wallet is not the same security risk as when someone splits their BTC from the Electrum wallet?

Yeah. It should be safer because even if a fake wallet steals your private-keys, there are no Bitcoins in there anymore. So you are only risking your BCH.

But you can *kinda* trust Electron Cash Smiley (at least for now)

To the nano ledger users, i have heard cases where the nano ledger s is very confusing to use and heard people say they made mistake and you could easily make a mistake of sending bch to btc wallet and vice versa and stuff like that.  Is that true or false?

It's true Rewording after reading HCP's post: It's true that some users may think it's confusing and will end up sending coins to the wrong address (not Ledger's fault). But I'm not sure if Nano S already supports the new cashaddr format for Bitcoin Cash which will make things easier.

Normally, both BTC and BCH will have the same valid addresses in both chains. So, my address 1NinjabXd5znM5zgTcmxDVzH4w3nbaY16L is valid for both chains and can store BTC and BCH. This means that you can send BTC/BCH to the opposite chain by mistake (BTC to BCH or vice-versa); (Btw, If you do that but you own the address - which is the case with the Ledger Nano -, you can recover it.)

To avoid this kind of mistakes, BCH adopted a new format that looks like this (which like I said above, is or will be supported by Nano): bitcoincash:qrhyrhms7kplesyktkfv2ea53x2dlacuuuxna40hym

It's false... the Ledger Nano S is NOT confusing to use. It is relatively simple and straightforward...

However, like a LOT of Bitcoin/Bitcoin Cash related things, because BCH was attempting to "be Bitcoin" and deliberately chose to use the same address format, there were a lot of issues with people sending BTC to BCH and BCH to BTC... because they were careless.

This was NOT limited to just Ledger, nor was it Ledger's "fault"... I've seen plenty of cases of people doing it to/from exchanges like Poloniex, Bittrex, Coinbase, Binance etc (hence why ALL the exchanges put the warnings about making sure you're sending to the correct address etc.)... and also with various wallets like Trezor, Bitcoin Core/BitcoinABC, Electrum/Electron Cash, Exodus, Jaxx etc... and other online services like changelly and shapeshift etc.

I see Bitcoin Cash has now introduced a new "CashAddr" format to try to reduce the amount of issues going forward. It won't stop it completely, as "legacy" addresses remain valid, but it should hopefully make it a little less likely that people mess things up by being careless.

Hey all.  I just sent my btc from my electrum to my nano ledger s.

So now i want to claim my bitcoin cash and gold.  Also does anyone know if you could claim bitcoin diamond now or not?

I mentioned how i only had one computer and didn't have access to another computer as it was recommended to download electroncash on another computer even though HCP and a few others say that is absolutely not necessary as they downloaded electroncash on their computer with no issues.

At the moment, i do have access to 1 or maybe 2 computers.  One is an old desktop computer that uses windows 7.  I had formatted it a while back but im pretty sure i did not do it correctly because it still had old files there.  So there is/might be a chance there is a virus there.  But if my plan is to just download electroncash and then send the bitcoin cash to nano ledger s, then that should be absolutely right fine right?  Or should i make sure i do a complete format of my desktop first before i download electroncash on the desktop?  I havent used that desktop in a very long time and do not play to use it after this as my laptop is my main computer that i use etc.  There are no issues with using an old laptop that is windows 7?  Now could i also do this with bitcoin gold?  I would like to send bitcoin gold to the nano ledger s as well.

Are there any issues if i use a very old laptop that might be using windows xp or vista to claim this or that might be issues?  Again, im planning to send the bitcoin cash and gold to my nano ledger s.

Also when i click on the chrome apps, i have the bitcoin ledger wallet and the  ledger manager showing only.  So basically if i want to have bitcoin cash/gold and say ETH or any other currencies, i need to open up ledger manager and click on the down arrow and download the bitcoin cash, gold wallet etc right?  And then i would open each one of them up to use it since you cannot have bitcoin opened up and bitcoin cash opened up as i read one issue with the the nano ledger s is you could only open one currency at a time?  Right now i just want to get the bitcoin cash and gold.  But there is no bitcoin diamond there.  So how would i be able to get that since the nano ledger s doesn't have it?  Someone told me in another forum they used an android phone with coinomi to get it.  The thing is i dont have an android phone.  Well i actually have an old android phone but the buttons have issues and basically doesnt work.  I would most likely just sell the bitcoin diamond as i dont think it would be any use.

So based on this, would you guys recommend me use the desktop computer to claim the bitcoin cash and gold?  Or maybe even another laptop that uses vista or even xp?

Thanks all.

I would not suggest to use xp or vista. Simply because those OS are outdated and contain a ton unpatched vulnerabilities.
It would be more efficient to use an USB stick from which you can boot a linux distro. Claim your coins on this live os.

With the ledger manager you can download those wallets onto your nano s.
You need to do this with every currency you want to hold.

Note: The storage of your nano s is limited. You  may have to uninstall apps before being able to install new ones. Your coins stay safe! You just have to uninstall/install the application again. Takes 5 seconds.

And then i would open each one of them up to use it since you cannot have bitcoin opened up and bitcoin cash opened up as i read one issue with the the nano ledger s is you could only open one currency at a time?

Yes.

Right now i just want to get the bitcoin cash and gold.  But there is no bitcoin diamond there.  So how would i be able to get that since the nano ledger s doesn't have it?

The nano s does not (and probably never will) support bitcoin diamond.
If you want to hold this shitcoin (better you don't) you need to install a bitcoin diamond wallet.

Okay i wont use vista or xp and will use windows 7 computer then.

Am i suppose to click on that green arrow next to bitcoin cash to download the wallet?  Its the list that shows

bitcoin
bitcoin cash
bitcoin gold

and the whole list of other coins?

Because when i did that, it ask me to confirm on ledger s my pin to download.  It then downloaded because i saw when i click right button, it goes from bitcoin to bitcoin cash.  However, when i open the chrome app, there is only ledger wallet bitcoin and ledger manager.  Shouldn't there be an app that shows ledger bitcoin cash?  Because how am i suppose to access my bitcoin cash wallet?  I already closed the ledger wallet bitcoin app.

What you did (when downloading an app in the ledger manager menu) is to download an application onto your nano s.
You can access your bcash wallet via the bitcoin chrome app. You will be asked which chain you want to use (BTC/BCH).

When you have your BTC app (chrome) open, you can click on 'Settings' -> 'Blockchains' and choose BCH.
Then you will have to open the bcash app on your nano s to be able to actually send BCH.

Hi there yes okay so yes i downloaded the green arrow next to bitcoin cash.

Oh you mean i just open up the bitcoin chrome app.  Then i click settings, blockchain and then bitcoin cash right?  And after this, what do i choose?  There is main or split?  I had btc in electrum when the fork happened.

And do i click remember in that page of bitcoin or bitcoin cash?  I assume dont remember since i mostly will log into my bitcoin app as oppose to bitcoin cash right?

So when i log into bitcoin wallet just click on blockchain and bitcoin and segwit and then my btc wallet will be there like normal?  But if i choose bitcoin and then legacy, then there will be no btc showing right?

And everytime i log into bitcoin cash, dont click remember since i rarely will log into to it?  I am planning to just get bitcoin cash from electrum... send bitcoin cash to nano ledger s and just store it in nano ledger s.

Okay so i just watched a video on the setting up of bitcoin cash wallet on the nano ledger s.

So claiming the bitcoin cash from electroncash from what others tell me is very easy.  Download electroncash and then send the bch to the nano ledger s.  However,. if you set up the bitcoin cash wallet correctly such as if you have to first click split first before you do it again and click main, then you are going to have both your bitcoin and bitcoin cash balance decrease?  I saw comments on youtube where their bitcoin wallet went to 0 because of this.  A video mentioned make sure you do the split otherwise your balances will both decrease.  Can someone explain what he means by this?  So basically if you make a mistake here, you can lose your btc and even some bch?  If so, man this nano ledger s configuration/setup for all these coins are very complicated.  I really thought the ledger s was very simple and even though im not tech savy, im not a complete tech newbie as installing electrum is not something that is super simple for most ppl... but this is very complicated for a wallet that supposedly is very easy.  You could easilyl make a mistake or think you make a mistake.

I already have the bitcoin cash program installed on my nano ledger s.  But should i even send bch from electroncash once i claim it?  Im thinking maybe just keep bch in electroncash or send it to an exchange as im worried i might do something wrong here and then my bitcoin balance will get lower etc.  Can someone tell me about the main/split thing?  First off, they ask questions like legacy or segwit and then main or split.  So basically if you pick legacy or segwit, well if you pick legacy, you only pay a little more transaction fees... no big deal.  But here if you choose main instead of split, then you risk losing your bitcoin and even bch?

No... the whole "main"/"split" thing is ONLY if you had BTC on your Ledger Nano S...

If you had BTC in another wallet, like Electrum, just use "Split"... The "Main" wallet on the Ledger Nano S uses identical addresses to the BTC Legacy wallet and exists so people who had BTC on Ledger at fork can get easy access to BCH...

It is NOT a good idea to continue to use the same addresses for BCH as it is easy to get confused and send the wrong coins to the wrong wallet.

BCH Main = derivation path m/44'/0'/0' (same as BTC Legacy), uses the BCH network for creating/signing transactions
BCH Split = derivation path 44'/145'/0' (BCH derivation Path), uses the BCH network for creating/signing transactions

BTC Recovery = derivation path 44'/145'/0' (BCH derivation Path), BUT uses the BTC network (designed to recover BTC send to BCH address by mistake)

BTC Legacy = derivation path m/44'/0'/0' and BTC network
BTC SegWit = derivation path m/49'/0'/0' and BTC network

Hi there.  Well i have btc on my ledger nano s right now.  I transferred the btc already from my electrum to nano ledger s already.

So you mean if i had btc on my ledger nano s during the fork?  Im confused here

Yes i had btc in my electrum during the fork and a long time after it.  I just recently transferred all the btc from electrum to nano ledger s.

With my bitcoin wallet on the nano ledger s, i already chosed segwit as opposed to legacy because others all recommended that so i did that earlier.

So you want me to create the bitcoin cash wallet by pressing bitcoin cash and then split?

Then i go and claim my bitcoin cash from electroncash?  Or should i claim my bitcoin cash from electroncash first before i set up bitcoin cash in nano ledger s.

Why confused? It's pretty simple...

BTC on Ledger at Fork = BCH on Ledger BCH "Main"
BTC sent to Ledger AFTER fork = NO BCH on ledger

It's like EVERY OTHER WALLET... Roll Eyes

BTC on <insert wallet> at Fork = BCH on <insert wallet>
BTC sent to <insert wallet> AFTER fork = NO BCH on <insert wallet>

Quote

Then Ledger BCH "Main" is useless to you and will be empty... use "Split" from here to find your shiny new (empty) BCH wallet and receive addresses.

Your BCH is on the same addresses as the old Electrum wallet. Use ElectronCash to see your BCH.

Quote
Then i go and claim my bitcoin cash from electroncash?  Or should i claim my bitcoin cash from electroncash first before i set up bitcoin cash in nano ledger s.
You don't "claim" BCH... it's not like this is a time limited thing... or you do anything special... BCH currently exists on the BCH blockchain for any BTC you had at the time of the fork... if you haven't done anything with it, it will just be sitting there... You can either leave it there... or move it by importing your old BTC seed/private keys into a compatible BCH wallet... which in your case would be ElectronCash (as it reads Electrum seeds/wallets)

So, in your case, install ElectronCash, open a copy of your old (now empty) Electrum wallet with ElectronCash... all the BCH will show up and you can send it wherever you want (Ledger "Split", Exchange etc) or just leave it there...

Hi there well thats confusing for someone like me but im sure ppl who are not that savy would find this confusing.

Yes i had btc in electrum at fork.  Nothing obviously in nano ledger s when the fork happened.

So you are telling me when i click on bitcoin cash in the option of bitcoin or bitcoin cash, i have to click on SPLIT as oppose to MAIN right otherwise i would have issues?  So you suggest i first do this... then that way i have BCH addresses available.

Then i install electroncash on same computer or different computer and input the seed.  Then i would get my BCH in electroncash.  Then send all the BCH to my BCH address in my nano ledger s when i click on the receive tab on the BCH account right?  Sorry im still confused why you say open an old now empty copy of your electrum wallet.  Isn't electrum not necessary at all to claim bitcoin cash?  I thought you only need to download electroncash and input the electrum seed.

Yes i know you could claim your bitcoin cash anytime.  I havent claimed it after all this because i didnt have another device and thinking i could mess it up.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i7--pmPa11E

This is the video that shows how to get bitcoin cash from electrum and the video is 1 minute only.  Its titled get bitcoin cash out of electrum in 60 seconds on youtube.

So this isn't the proper way then?  There is no mention of electrum wallet etc.  Just the 12 word phrase that you have to input.

The whole point of using a copy of the Electrum wallet file is that it means you don't have to type your seed in, so there is no chance that a keylogger can get it... You're simply using ElectronCash instead of Electrum to open up the wallet file (it'll even have the same password!)

But yeah, use the seed if you want... it really doesn't matter... one way potentially exposes the seed, one way doesn't... both will allow you to get BCH

hcp that makes sense.  i did not think about that.  Okay so just to make sure.  This is what im planning to do.

1.  Create a bitcoin cash wallet and click SPLIT.  Now i have BCH address in my nano ledger s.

2.  Im going to use a separate windows machine.  But i also will have to download electrum on it first right since i would input the 12 word electrum seed to restore my electrum on the separate machine?

3.  Then i install electron cash on the separate windows machine.

4.  Then i would import the private keys from electrum to electroncash correct?  And to do this, both electrum and electroncash will be opened at the same time since i have to go to options in electrum, look for private keys... copy that and paste that into electroncash?

5.  Once i do this, the BCH will appear in my electron cash wallet

6.  Use my main computer with the nano ledger s and have the bitcoin cash split opened where it shows the BCH receiving address.

7.  Then send the BCH from the electroncash on the secondary device to the BCH address.  But if i were to do this, how do i copy and paste my BCH address from the bitcoin cash receiving address to electroncash?  Thus if its the same device, i would just copy and paste the BCH address from the nano ledger to electroncash.   Im not going to type it out manually right?  Or should i be doing that since its a separate computer?  Or just send an email of that address to another email address and open it up on the secondary computer so i could copy and paste?  I know i sound confusing here but i assume you know what i mean by this?

8.  Have BCH in my nano ledger s.  And anytime i send bch to another site, i make sure i click on bitcoin cash and then split.  Everytime i use bitcoin, i click on bitcoin and segwit right?   Also does that mean i no longer click on remember my choice when i click on bitcoin?  I did that earlier since i only used bitcoin.  So what would happen if i click on bitcoin and then legacy or bitcoin cash and then main?  there would be 0 btc and 0 bch in those wallets right?

No, why do you care about Electrum if it's already empty and there is no BTC? Huh There is no point recreating the wallet in Electrum. My advice regarding opening the Electrum wallet file in ElectronCash was only valid if either ElectronCash was on the same machine, or you copy the wallet file to the machine with ElectronCash.

3.  Then i install electron cash on the separate windows machine.
Yes... I don't personally think the separate machine is required, especially if your BTC is already on a hardware wallet...  but whatever floats your boat...

No, just use your Electrum Seed with ElectronCash - "File -> New\Restore -> Standard -> I already have a seed"

5.  Once i do this, the BCH will appear in my electron cash wallet
Yes

Quote

You don't have to have it open, you just need to have the BCH Split "receive" address (Written down or copy/pasted etc)

seriously? Roll Eyes *smh* Honestly mate, you are taking a VERY simple process and totally over-thinking it to the point that it is just painful and annoying.

If you want to run ElectronCash on some separate computer because #paranoia... then go right ahead... but now you want step by step instructions on how to get an address from one computer to another??!? Roll Eyes write it down, type it in... email it to yourself... text it to yourself... take a picture of it on your phone... copy it into a text document and use a usb stick... tattoo it on your ass and then use a mirror so you can type it in...

OR... I don't know... maybe you could just INSTALL ELECTRONCASH ON THE SAME DAMN COMPUTER and copy/paste the address Roll Eyes

Yes

Yes, assuming you want to use your SegWit wallet

Yes... Believe it or not... but if you don't send anything to those wallets, they'll be empty. Just like every other bitcoin/bitcoin cash wallet ever made... Tongue Roll Eyes

HCP, i appreciate you so much for answering all my messages very clearly.

Okay i get what you mean with the one the same machine now.

I will be setting up my old computer soon so i could claim the bitcoin cash on it.

But since i will be using a different computer to use electroncash, would you say its necessary to do a complete reinstall of windows 10 of it or that is completely unnecessary?  For me, security is very important.

And since im using electron cash on different computer, there is no harm at all in just typing the 12 word phrase?  But if the computer might have virus, that might not be good idea?

Hey HCP.  Im going to finally get my BCH now as i just recently set up my old windows 7 desktop.  I been very hesitant doing this so sorry for taking so long with this.

Right now on the nano ledger s, after i type in the pin, there is bitcoin and if you right click button the nano ledger s , there is bitcoin cash words showing on my ledger.  Does that mean i had earlier downloaded the bitcoin cash app fro the ledger manager?  Because im sure it wasn't there earlier?

So right now when i log into my nano ledger, when i click bitcoin and then segwit, it shows how much btc i have etc.

Then i just click blockchain and click on bitcoin cash and split.  Thus i dont need to unplug my nano ledger s and plug it back in and put the pin again right?  Then once i do this, it would show my BCH address right?  So let say now i want to go to my btc wallet.  I just click on settings, blockchain, bitcoin and segwit, then i get back to my btc balance right?  Then i can go right back blockchain, bitcoin cash and split?  So make sure to never ever click blockchain, bitcoin and legacy or blockchain, bitcoin cash and main?  Or does doing that doesn't matter because it always will show 0 btc or 0 bch there?

Then i email my bch address from one computer to the other... thus send the email from laptop to the same email on the old windows 7 desktop computer... then open that email up.

Now i download from the electroncash.org site on the old windows 7 computer.  Then click on already have my seed.  Then manually type in my 12 word phrase.  Then it would ask me if i want to put a password or not like in electrum.  I just put a password on it etc.  Or does it not ask you that and you have to do it mnaully?  Then i would click send bch to that BCH address i copied but first do a very tiny amount just to make sure.  Then once i check its there in my nano ledger s, then i send the rest of it right?

So is this the right steps?  I want to make sure as im set up right now to do now as i did not set up my old windows 10 computer earlier when i posted this.

Also with the bitcoin gold

I actually have an android phone that i could do this with.  So how would i claim my bitcoin gold on an android?  This is a phone that someone else uses so there should be no issue right?

But first before i do this, i have to download the bitcoin gold app first right?  To first get the bitcoin gold address.  But are they going to ask me anything strange like bitcoin legacy/segwit or main/split?

Right now i want to make sure i claim the bitcoin cash first and send it to my nano ledger s.

Then i do the bitcoin gold.

Thanks HCP.

After you have downloaded electroncash, just create a new wallet then use i have recovery seed, put the seed there and your coins should show up

for bitcoin gold, download coinomi on your android phone and sweep the private key with the address and you should see the coins.

Okay so i just downloaded bitcoin gold app on my nano ledger s.

So at the moment, i have bitcoin, bitcoin cash and bitcoin gold app on my nano ledger s.

I think i might made a mistake in those steps i listed.  So in the process of claiming bitcoin cash... i first click on the ledger wallet bitcoin app.  Then i put in my pin number in the nano ledger s.  But when i do this, make sure i click on BITCOIN CASH on the nano ledger s right?  Because previously i had clicked on bitcoin... hold 2 buttons on the nano legder s... then it showed the option of bitcoin or bitcoin cash and then legacy or segwit.  So had i clicked on BITCOIN on the nano ledger, then clicking on the bitcoin cash and then SPLIT it would not have worked?

I ask this because i had clicked on BITCOIN GOLD on the nano ledger s and it showed option of i dont know, legacy or segwit.  So when i get my BCH address, i need to make sure after typing in pin on the ledger s, make sure i right click once and thus CLICK ON BITCOIN CASH right on the actual nano ledger s?  Thus after i do that, it would ask me bitcoin or bitcoin cash and then MAIN OR SPLIT?  Because right now im thinking had i just opened BITCOIN ON THE NANO LEDGER S... then clicked bitcoin cash and then split, then that WOULD BE INCORRECT?

I just noticed this right now so i haven't made a mistake yet so just want to make sure im doing this right HCP.

Yes, you need to make sure you have selected the correct "coin" on the ledger nano S device.

- If you want to look at your BTC wallet, it is best to select "Bitcoin" on the Ledger device
- If you want to look at your BCH wallet, it is best to select "Bitcoin Cash" on the Ledger device
- If you want to look at your BTG wallet, you HAVE to select "Bitcoin Gold" on the Ledger device

With BTC and BCH, because they were so similar and because of "forking" requirements, you can actually look at BCH wallet even if you have "Bitcoin" selected on the Ledger device... as the Chrome Wallet app allows you to specify which "blockchain" you want to use (it's actually bad terminology, it should say "derivation path"). I believe this is where a LOT of the confusion occurs. Personally, I find it more useful to specify the "coin" on the device as well, so I have it straight in my head, which "coin" I SHOULD be looking at.

BTG is a completely different story, and you won't be able to access the BTG wallet unless you select "Bitcoin Gold" on the device.

HCP, the first time that i clicked on BCH on my nano ledger and then clicked SPLIT, it took a just a bit before the wallet opened.  Now it shows the BCH wallet and 0 BCH and when you click on receiving address, it shows the receiving address..

So whenever i want to go from btc wallet to bch wallet, could i just click on blockchain and then click on bitcoin cash and then split?  Then if i want to go to btc wallet, i click blockchain and then bitcoin and segwit?

Because for me right now to make it safe, whenever i would log into btc wallet after typing in pin and clicking bitcoin on the nano ledger, the first thing i would do is close the ledger bitcoin chrome app.  Then i unplug my nano ledger s from the usb.  Then click on ledger bitcoin app.  Then plug my nano ledger s into the usb, input pin and then click in bitcoin gold on my nano ledger s... then i click bitcoin cash and then split.

Is there a way for me to go from one coin to another without having to unplug and plug my nano ledger s?  Or is that not possible?  Because when i close the ledger bitcoin app, my nano ledger s is still connected.  Thus i need to unconnect it so it then ask me for my pin again.  Otherwise i cannot go to another wallet such as bitcoin cash.  Thus if i want to go to bitcoin gold, it would not work etc... unless there is some button i can click on?

Because right now i have to unplug my ledger s and plug it in everytime i go from btc wallet to bch wallet.  So i figure if i go to BTG wallet or any other wallet like dash or eth etc, then it requires me to unplug and plug it again and again?  Because not only is this annoying, but i might break the cable/wire if i keep unplug and plug etc.

You don't need to keep disconnecting the ledger when you want to change to a different coin... on your device, scroll down using the right button (labelled 'v' on the screen) until you find "Quit App"... click with both buttons to go back to the "coin" selection (main) menu. You should notice that the "Ledger Wallet Bitcoin" Chrome App, goes back to the default "To begin, connect and unlock your Ledger wallet" screen. When you select a new "coin" on the device, the chrome app will open up the wallet dashboard again.

Alternatively, if you're just switching between BTC and BCH, just click "Settings -> Blockchains"... you don't need to disconnect the Ledger to do this.

I made a video demonstrating how to go from one "coin" to another on the device... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=viKI0BqP-mo

The quality is terribad and the music is a bit naff, but you get the idea Tongue

So whenever i want to go from btc wallet to bch wallet, could i just click on blockchain and then click on bitcoin cash and then split?  Then if i want to go to btc wallet, i click blockchain and then bitcoin and segwit?

You are able to switch between those two wallets this way, yes.
But to be able to send coins (or sign messages) you need to have the corresponding app opened on your nano s.

Meaning: If you have BTC app on your nano s open and currently are using BTC on your chrome app -> if you now click on settings and change to BCH -> You will be able to see your balances/addresses
but won't be able to spend coins until you have opened the BCH app on your nano s.

There are basically 2 steps you need to do to get your nano s back to the status of 'just plugged in':
  • Scroll down to 'Quit App' on your nano s (and press it)
  • Close the chrome wallet application

Afterwards you can start any app you wish in chrome (and nano s) without unplugging it.

Has there been anyone that still have not claimed their BCH yet or Bitcoin gold?

Im planning to claim both of them as i will have access to another laptop as i don't want to do this on the computer with electrum on it.  So when claiming, bitcoin cash, do it with electron cash and make sure its right link right?  Then once i do that, send it to my nano ledger s?

Then claim the bitcoin gold from an android phone?  And once i do that, send it to my nano ledger s?

Then what about the bitcoin sv?  How do i claim that?

I want to claim all of these and have them sent to my nano ledger s.  I been putting it off for way too long.

Very little point claiming anything other than the BCH at this point... the rest aren't really worth anything unless you had "a lot" of BTC (10+) at the time of the forks Tongue

For reference, BTG is currently at $12... Bitcoin SV is $65...

Also, there is no reason for you to use a different device to claim each fork... ie. BCH using laptop and BTG using android phone... just do it all on the laptop.

Then what about the bitcoin sv?  How do i claim that?
For the record, Ledger don't support Bitcoin SV, you'll need to find a Bitcoin SV wallet to store them: https://support.ledger.com/hc/en-us/articles/360012270054-Safely-claim-Bitcoin-Cash-SV-BSV-

As far as I'm aware, there was a special version of Electron Cash created that enabled one to claim Bitcoin SV... instructions with pretty pictures here: https://github.com/markblundeberg/coinsplitter/blob/master/doc/coinsplitter_user_guide.md

HCP.  Well i want to claim the forks so i have them in the nano ledger s or whatever wallet so i dont have to think about it in the future.

You could claim bitcoin gold on a laptop?  Im pretty sure i never heard this?  I remember many ppl said you should use an android phone for it for gold.  What program you suppose to use on a laptop for bitcoin gold

Well the thing is this.  Well i kept all my btc in electrum for a while before i moved them to my nano ledger s.  So i of course still have that 12 word phrase with electrum.  Thus i don't want to have anything in electrum anymore due to the security etc.   Thus i want to get the bitcoin cash, gold, sv etc so then i have nothing left in electrum.  Does that make sense?  I actually have some btc still left in electrum but i havent opened the program yet due to reading about the fake updates with it so i just want to take precaution.  Because i still havent claimed my btc cash yet.

So right now im going to use a desktop to claim my btc cash.  So download from electroncash and do that right but make sure its the correct link?

Then do that with the link you posted for bitcoin gold as oppose to using an android to claim btc gold?

Okay the claiming bitcoin gold thing through android is through that program coinomi as i just went through old threads.  But now i read there are issues with it?

HCP, right now i have access to another computer.  The issue though is its windows 7 which isn't a big deal.  But i did a clean reinstall of it a while back but issue is i didn't do it correctly as i still have old files from it.  Also its extremely slow and has no antivirus protection at the moment.  Have to download one.

Would you suggest first do a clean reinstall of windows 7 everything to make sure its fully clean first before installing electron cash on it?  Installing electron cash on the computer now where it might potentially have a virus is not good idea right?  I don't think it has virus... i did clean reinstall it but i didnt delete those old files... so if any old files have virus then its not good idea?  I know you said installing electron cash on same device as electrum is fine as you did it with no issues.  But you did say look at your tolerance and risk to it and you said for you, it wasn't risky because you know what you are doing.

Are you referring to the problem with the desktop version of Coinomi where one user lost a lot of money since the desktop version does a spell check on the seed words with google? As far as I know that vulnerability was only present in the Desktop client - not in the Android version.

The download page for Electron Cash doesn't mention if they have support for Windows 7 but there have been problems in the past with various wallets/software not working properly on Windows 7. I think Ledger Live also doesn't support it any longer.
If you don't have any important documents on that computer just reinstall your OS, install Windows 10 if you can. Better be safe than sorry and risk your funds being stolen due to malware that could be present on your device.

jerry0, why complicate something that should be pretty easy? To claim forked coins two things are important :

  • To move Bitcoin from wallet which private keys / seed you will use to claim forked coins.
  • To be careful with downloads of wallets for those coins.

Furthermore, it is important that you claim one coin at the time by download wallets and importing your seed / private keys. After you import seed / private key in wallet you will see your balance, and then you can send that coins to Ledger Nano S.

Electrum bitcoin and ElectronCash can work on same device without problem, it has been repeated several times. I advise you to read this thread from the beginning, answers to all your questions have already been posted.

Yes that is what im referring to.  Well i read a while back that people said if you want to claim bitcoin gold when your bitcoin was in electrum at the time, you can use coinomi on the android.  I have access to an android phone now so i figure i could do that.  Would you recommend this?

I don't have anything important on that windows 7 desktop at all.  The thing is i have done a clean reinstall on it before but it did not completely wipe everything out as i made a mistake somewhere in it.  So there could be chance it has malware or something like that.  So i thought of do i want to do that and download electron cash on it and do it... or make sure i wipe computer fully clean on the desktop before doing this.

I still have a small amount of my btc in my electrum.  So right now go and send the rest of btc from electrum to nano ledger.

Then go to www.electroncash.org  and download that.

Then i type in my 12 word seed to claim the BCH right?  Or should i import the file?  Or either is fine?  My windows 10 laptop that im using now which has my electrum wallet and everything important... there is virus or malware or at least there should not be as i been using it for a while without issue.

Then send the bitcoin cash from electron cash to my nano ledger?

Then should i delete electron cash from my windows 10 laptop that im using now?

Then for bitcoin gold, use the android phone to do it?

Yes HCP mentioned to me no issue downloading electron cash on same computer as electrum.  He however did say he took necessary precautions though and said he knew what he was doing even though there was a risk.  But as long as you download the correct electron cash from www.electroncash.org  you are fine right?

~snip~
Sending bitcoin from Electrum or from any other wallet which seed / private keys you will use to claim fork coins is just for security of you bitcoins in case that you download fake wallet. So yes, you should send all bitcoins to Ledger Nano S since you have such wallet.

When you download ElectronCash wallet just follow steps : Standard wallet -> I already have a seed -> Enter seed words -> Then choose type of address (in your case it is probably "legacy"). When ElectronCash wallet is sync you should see correct balance and then you can connect Ledger Nano S and depending what you use (Ledger Live or Chrome App) navigate to BitcoinCash receiving address -> copy paste that address in Electron Cash and send to Ledger. You can delete ElectronCash after that, and use same seed to claim any other forked coin.

I have ElectronCash and Electrum in same PC for long time, nothing bad has happened - if it is a legitimate wallet you are perfectly safe.

Hi there.  When you say enter seed words and then choose type of address... you say its probably legacy... how would i know if its that or segwit?  Are there only 2 options?  So how i know for sure?  If i put in legacy but its segwit, there will be issue?

I know that for my nano ledger s, the bitcoin wallet, i set it up as segwit as oppose to legacy a while back because ppl said you save money on sending fees or something like that?  So segwit has nothing to do with the nano ledger s right?

So how i know if the address i have is probably legacy?  If it isn't then what will happen?  How do i know if my electrum was legacy or segwit?

If your Electrum addresses start with "1"? --> Then it is guaranteed to be "Legacy"

If your Electrum addresses start with a "3"... there is a chance your addresses were SegWit, but isn't likely unless you specifically created the Electrum wallet to be SegWit... However, if they are "3", they're more likely to be part of either a 2FA or multisig wallet... it won't be "easy" to claim the BCH, but can be achieved with a lot of manual effort.

If your Electrum addresses start with "bc1"... then you're shit outta luck... as they are guaranteed to be SegWit... and BCH doesn't support SegWit... no way for a typical end user to recover these coins.

Took a look at my electrum 3.3.4 wallet and all the addresses receiving ones start with a 1.

So that is legacy.  But do you know why the other person thought it might be segwit?

HCP, im going to do it with the claiming the bitcoin cash and gold now as you seen from when this thread was created, i still have not done it due to being paranoid of a mistake.

As of now i do have a separate computer to download electroncash on but its windows 7 and i have to do a clean reinstall because im sure not sure 100 percent if the computer is malware free or not.  My currently laptop with windows 10 which i have other wallets and ledger live and everything on it... is fine.  So like you and others say do it on the same machine its fine as long as you take necessary precautions so i will do this.

Also of now, i have no bitcoin in my electrum wallet anymore.  Everything is in my nano ledger.  So the steps now are

1.  Download Electron cash ... make sure its the legit one

2.  Then type in i already have a seed.  Last time you said you could copy/paste the file there or manually type in the 12 word seed.  You seed its better putting the file because you are not exposed to it unlike typing the 12 word seed.  But where is this file on my computer?  So you say do this as oppose to type it out?  I want to do it exactly like you but where is this electrum file so to speak?

3.  I downloaded the bitcoin cash and bitcoin gold programs into my nano ledger s a while back BUT THIS WAS WITH THE CHROME LEDGER... NOT THE LEDGER LIVE.  At the moment, im using ledger live as others here recommended b/c the chrome app is outdated.  When i check my nano ledger and scroll through it, it seems the only coin wallets i installed is btc and waves only right if i scroll and there is only bitcoin, waves and then settings and nothing more?  I however did not connect the waves wallet to it yet.  So basically i only have btc there now.  When you go to accounts under ledger live, there is 1 account and its called btc.

So now i have to download bitcoin cash and bitcoin gold wallet from the manager tab right?  Download bitcoin cash and bitcoin gold one after another?  However when i do this, the only question it will ask me for bitcoin cash wallet is legacy or segwit right?  And because the addresses in my electrum wallet start with a number 1, its legacy?  The thing is, would it ask me anything else like is it a split or something like that?  When looking at the thread earlier, when i installed bitcoin cash and gold wallet into my nano ledger s when i used the bitcoin ledger on chrome, i recalled you mentioned i had to make sure i make sure it was so and so.  But since im using ledger live now, is the only message it will ask me after installing bitcoin cash wallet into ledger live via ledger live is legacy or segwit and thats it?  Then after i do that, install bitcoin gold wallet and it would not ask me anything or it would ask me?

4.  After this, do i need to click the plus button and add more accounts in ledger live?  It shows 1 account and its bitcoin only.  I see if you click on the plus sign, you could add bitcoin cash or bitcoin gold and other coins.  Is this necessary since im claiming bitcoin cash and gold and have it sent to ledger live?

5.  So after i enter the information from electroncash, i will have the bitcoin cash showing on the wallet similar to like how it displays bitcoin in electrum wallet right?  So when i view this wallet, i should first send a small amount of bitcoin cash to the nano ledger s just to make sure it works first before sending the entire balance right?  Also what about the fee?  Better to send it with faster speed right?

However, wouldn't it be good idea before you do any of this, set a password on it similar to like how electrum does it with that 3 form of security?  Thus no password and no encrypt?  Or password and no encrypt or encrypt and encrypt?  Or don't bother with any of this since im planning to send all the bitcoin cash from it the nano ledger live and then no longer would be using it?  I might just delete it right afterwards once the bitcoin cash hits my nano ledger s?

6.  With the bitcoin gold claim.  You mention you could do this with a computer?  What program you need for this?  Someone a while back said you could use an android phone and use coinomi to sweep the bitcoin gold so to speak... then you send it to your bitcoin gold wallet.  At the moment, i do have access to an android phone.  So which of these would you recommend?

I been procrastinating way too long with this due to paranoia.  I didn't open my electrum for a few months because i read those security updates and issues so i just kept some btc there until later on.  And now i sent all the btc i had left from electrum to nano ledger s so i feel better now.  But of course i still have the bitcoin cash and gold that i want to move to my nano ledger s.

Actually from the steps i listed, first install bitcoin cash and gold first in my ledger first before installing electron cash right?  Then the bitcoin gold thing?  That way it would be much faster?

Tried to install bitcoin gold app first from Manager.

Message shows bitcoin and eth apps required.  Install the latest bitcoin and eth apps first.

I already have btc app installed.  So i then tried to install btc app and it says i already have it...

So i need to install ETH app even though i don't have eth?

Firmware version is 1.4.2 if that means anything?

Okay i just clicked on update ledger live as i saw this.  It did updated.  Firmware version shows 1.4.2.  But next to it shows firmware version 1.5.5 is available.  Do i update the firmware first before downloading the bitcoin gold and cash wallets?

Ok... first of all... LEARN TO USE THE EDIT BUTTON FFS!!?! Stop multiposting... it is VERY annoying and actually against the rules... If you think of new questions, and nobody has posted after you... simply edit your post and put ALL the questions together in ONE post...  Angry

So that is legacy.  But do you know why the other person thought it might be segwit?
Because Electrum supports both... so they were checking.

1.  Download Electron cash ... make sure its the legit one
Yes

Quote
Just use the 12 word seed... trying to find and use the electrum wallet file is unnecessary.

Quote
You actually don't have any coins "on your ledger"... Coins are NOT held in wallets... coins are recorded and listed on the blockchain... Simply put, all a wallet (like Ledger or Electrum) does is hold private keys that allow you to sign transactions to spend coins...

I don't know why you're so hung up about Chrome Webapps and Ledger Live... simply use Ledger Live like it was the Chrome app... it is essentially the same thing... an interface to interact with your Ledger Nano S device. It allows you to install/uninstall coin apps on the device... and view your "accounts"

It probably won't ask you anything... it'll probably automatically scan for accounts... when it can't find any transactions, because you have none... then you'll be able to choose

Quote
Well obviously, Yes. If you want to be able to create BCH and BTG addresses to send to, you're going to need to have set it up on both the device and within Ledger Live. Click add accounts, choose the coin types you want to add (Bitcoin Cash and Bitcoin Gold).

Quote
BCH doesn't need big fees... the network load is low and the block size is massive... use the lowest fee, you'll likely get next block confirmation.

Use this Bitcoin "Electrum"-like wallet: https://bitcoingold.org/electrumg/

Actually from the steps i listed, first install bitcoin cash and gold first in my ledger first before installing electron cash right?  Then the bitcoin gold thing?  That way it would be much faster?
You will need to:

1. Install Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash and Bitcoin Gold "apps" on your Ledger device
2. Create BCH and BTG accounts on Ledger Live and get BCH and BTG addresses.
2. Install Electron Cash, create wallet using 12 word seed, send Bitcoin Cash to Bitcoin Cash address from Ledger
3. Install ElectrumG, create wallet using 12 word seed, send Bitcoin Gold to Bitcoin Gold address from Ledger

You are DONE. It's not that complicated... or "dangerous" Roll Eyes

No, it's an incorrect message... you DON'T need ETH... but you DO need the most up-to-date BTC app (version 1.3.8 when this was writtent)... chances are you have an old version installed on the device. Simply, uninstall ALL the apps from the device (you'll need to uninstall Bitcoin LAST)... Then, install Bitcoin (should be 1.3.Cool, then install Bitcoin Cash (1.3.Cool, then install Bitcoin Gold (1.3.Cool.

Okay i just clicked on update ledger live as i saw this.  It did updated.  Firmware version shows 1.4.2.  But next to it shows firmware version 1.5.5 is available.  Do i update the firmware first before downloading the bitcoin gold and cash wallets?
You should be able to stay with firmware 1.4.2 I think... however, if you have issues installing BTC, BCH and BTG apps, then update the firmware to 1.5.5.

Hey hcp thanks for the reply.  Okay will make sure i edit my replies now as oppose to making more replies as its confusing.

Okay i tried to install bitcoin gold right now without updating firmware and i get that same message.  When i tried to click on update firmware to 1.5.5, it give me message please uninstall all apps to make room for the update.  Uninstalling does not affect your crypto assets.

Then it shows the release note and says your 24 word phrase is not required but make sure its within reason as a precaution.

I do not have the 24 word phrase with me at the moment.  So i should not do this right now?

Or do I just do what you say and uninstall all the apps first?  You say uninstall bitcoin last.  I only have waves and bitcoin wallet i believe?  How do i know which wallet i have in it?  Because when i scroll through it, there is waves, bitcoin, settings and it goes back to waves.  So i only have 2 right?  So uninstall waves and then bitcoin?  So even though i installed bitcoin, bitcoin cash and bitcoin gold in that google chrome bitcoin ledger a while back that has nothing to do with ledger live right?

And when i uninstall waves and then bitcoin, then install bitcoin, bitcoin cash and bitcoin gold right?  Then install waves since im planning to use it later on?

There is nothing that can go wrong when i uninstall waves and bitcoin right?  When i uninstall bitcoin, that mean the ledger live will show i have no bitcoin there in the portfolio or accounts right?  But once i download bitcoin wallet right afterwards from manager, it should be there?  Or i download it and then press plus and create account so it look like how it does now?

But if i can't install bitcoin 1.3 etc after all of this, then install the firmware to 1.5.5 right?  Which firmware are you using now?  Do you know why in the world i have this issue where i cannot install bitcoin cash or bitcoin gold etc?  I mean i just updated ledger live now... why doesn't that solve the issue?

Also before i attempt any of this, i should make sure i have my 24 word phrase with me at the moment just in case right?  What im worried about is some firmware update that gets frozen and this happened last time and i freaked out.

Up to you... it *shouldn't* wipe the device... but as they say, if something does go wrong, and you end up having to completely wipe/reset the Nano, then you'll need the 24 words to restore the device.

No... that's not how it works... once an account is "imported" into Ledger Live, it stays there until you remove it... it makes no difference what apps you have installed on the device itself.

When you add the coinapps to the Nano, it won't automatically accounts into Ledger Live... you will need to click the "+" to add accounts, then select which ones you want to add to Ledger Live.

1.  Hi there.  I have the 24 word phrase put somewhere at the moment and will look for it in a bit.  I wrote the 24 word phrase a while back when i first got it.  I never did test the 24 word phrase so to speak.  But i did make sure i looked carefully at all the word before writing each one extremely carefully.  There was an app i recalled in the app where you could test your 24 word phrase that you mentioned not long ago.  But i cannot do this now right since i cant install anything?

Okay thanks yes waves and bitcoin is only what i see on the device.

2.  Okay so when i remove waves and bitcoin wallet from the ledger, it will still show the amount of btc i have there and the balance of it right?  When i uninstall bitcoin, will i see the accounts (1) bitcoin under it there or not?  I just don't want any surprises as a little thing like that would freak me out.

3.  I see new version of bitcoin to install is 1.3.2.  So there is no way to know what version im using now right?  Okay so because i didn't bother installing any new apps the last few months and didn't do any update to the ledger live until today, this is the reason im having this issue?  Thus say you haven't touched it for 2 months.  Then you notice you could update ledger live and do it.  You will have issues like this?  But say you are someone who use it almost every other day etc, then there would be no issue since you would update ledger live when necessary?  Or that wouldn't even work because when bitcoin app updates to like 1.4 or 1.5, you wouldn't know about it and everyone eventually have the same exact issue here?

May i ask what firmware you are using now?  Are you using 1.4.2 or 1.5.5?  I just want to make sure i do the same thing as you.

It's called "Recovery Check"... you should be able to install that regardless of what else you have installed on the device... although, it might be a Firmware 1.5.5 feature.

It won't change anything in Ledger Live

To know what version you are using... on the device, open the bitcoin app, and then scroll to "about" and select that. It'll show you the version currently installed.

If you only see 1.3.2 in Ledger Live... then you'll most likely need to update to Firmware 1.5.5. to see Bitcoin 1.3.8.

I went to bitcoin on the ledger nano... click the about... it shows version 1.3.1.

So based on that... you recommend me updating the firmware 1.5.5 first while the nano ledger is plugged inside my laptop?

OR

Just uninstall waves and then bitcoin wallet and then reinstall bitcoin, then waves, then bitcoin cash and gold and if there is issue, update to firmware 1.5.5?

Also im curious but even if you use your nano ledger s everyday, do you even get an update for when bitcoin wallet version updates?  Example it doesn't alert you when there is a new update right?  So wouldn't that mean the issue im having... almost everyone will be having this issue?  Or its because i did not update ledger live and the firmware for a while?  But if someone uses the nano ledger every other day and updates whatever is necessary that is showing on the nano ledger whether its ledger live or the firmware, they would never have this issue?

Did you ever have this message i have HCP?  And curious how often you use your nano ledger s?  By that i mean just plugging it into to your computer and not doing transactions.

Because if any of this is the case, then i guess its best to just plug the nano ledger s and open ledger live every other day etc so i won't have an issue like this?

You don't get updates that the coinapp versions have updated... you only get notifications that Ledger Live version can be updated and that the firmware version can be updated.

At this point you can:

1. uninstall all apps from your device... install Bitcoin, install Bitcoin Cash, install Bitcoin Gold (optionally install Waves, it isn't required for claiming BCH and BTG)

or

2. uninstall all apps from your device... update firmware to 1.5.5, install Bitcoin, install Bitcoin Cash, install Bitcoin Gold (optionally install waves)

With either option, you should be able to get BCH and BTG

HCP thanks.  So that means that you also had to uninstall bitcoin and the other versions because you had the same issue too?  So wouldn't mean everyone would have this same issue?  I mean how could you NOT have this issue then?

Okay so the 3rd option of just updating the firmware to 1.5.5 and then trying to download bitcoin cash and gold wallet isn't an option?

Most likely not... because:

a. You'll more than likely need to uninstall all the apps so the "updater" can be loaded onto the device
and
b. After you update to firmware 1.5.5... BCH app and BTG app available in "Manager" will be at 1.3.8, but the BTC app already on your device will be < v1.3.2... BCH and BTG apps rely on the BTC app. You will get an error when you try to install higher version BCH and BTG telling you that you need to update BTC app first.

So, like I said... you have two options.

HCP, one other question before I do this and will post back.  But as of now, you cannot use the ledger wallet chrome anymore?  Or you could still use it?

Also if i remove waves and bitcoin wallet and cannot install bitcoin, bitcoin cash and bitcoin gold wallet... do i even have the option to send the bitcoin in my ledger live to somewhere else or its not possible because i removed the bitcoin wallet?

So if someone say did not have their 24 word seed at that moment after removing the bitcoin app from ledger live... they are screwed?  But if you could use still the ledger wallet on chrome then its still fine?

As far as I'm aware... the Chrome app still "works"... but can be unreliable with things like countervalue (ie. USD values) not working correctly... long sync times etc.

Quote

No. If you do not have the appropriate "coinapp" installed on the device, you will be unable to sign any transactions for that particular coin... so you will be unable to send any of those coins anywhere until such time as you can install the coinapp.

Why would they be screwed? Huh Simply removing the bitcoin app from the device does not destroy coins or render the device inoperable etc... You can simply "reinstall" the coinapp on the device via "Manager" without the 24 word recovery phrase and everything will still function as normal.

The issue is with updating the firmware... and even then, you don't need the 24 word recovery phrase to complete the firmware update. It is just recommended to have access to the 24 word recovery phrase in case something goes wrong when updating the firmware and you have to completely reset the device.

In the vast majority of cases, the firmware update will complete without incident and you won't need to use the restore the device at all.

You can use Ledger Bitcoin App in Chrome until the same app is supported by Ledger or Chrome. In order to update new firmware 1.5.5 on Ledger it is necessary to remove all apps from Ledger Nano S, and after that you will add them back by using Ledger Live.

Seed words are only backup in case something goes wrong, so it is important that you have them - but they are not necessary to make firmware update. Everything is very simple, but for some reason you make all complicated for yourself.

2. uninstall all apps from your device... update firmware to 1.5.5, install Bitcoin, install Bitcoin Cash, install Bitcoin Gold (optionally install waves)

Use this advice from HCP, It is very easy and you just need to follow the instructions from Ledger Live&Ledger Nano S. If you need extra help visit this link, there you can see text&video tutorial : https://support.ledger.com/hc/en-us/articles/360002731113

Hey HCP.  Okay i uninstalled waves and then btc.  Then i installed btc, bitcoin cash and bitcoin gold wallet.  I did not do the firmware update to 1.5.5.

I then added bitcoin cash in the accounts and have it showing.  Then i click receive to show my bitcoin cash address and it starts with a 1.  Then i did this with bitcoin gold and then when i click receive bitcoin gold, it shows an address that begins with the letter A... that is correct?

Okay so right now i have all the wallets added to my nano ledger s.

Im going to download electron cash on my same windows 10 computer and do as you mentioned.  And I will be sending tiny amount of bch from electron cash to test it out by sending tiny bit of bitcoin cash first to it to make sure i receive in ledger first.

Then i send the rest.

And last one before i confirm.

But just to make sure of this

How do you want me to type electron cash to visit website to make sure i get to the correct one.

Do i type in

https://electroncash.org

Because when i type in electron cash on google

first link that shows up has it spelled this way.

I want to make sure this is the correct electron cash as others say don't use google as it could lead you to a fake wallet.

I took a look at the electroncash site and i should click on download latest version 4.0.0 right in the middle of the page correct?

HCP sorry for posting this in a new post but the one above it looks too long.

I downloaded electroncash from me typing out on address bar

https://electroncash.org

Then i downloaded it on the windows installer.  When i try to open it, i get message from windows its unrecognized, do you want to run anyway.  I click yes right?  Did everyone here receive this message first before opening electroncash?

That sounds about right... I believe that Ledger generates "legacy" addresses for Bitcoin Cash... Electron Cash will still be able to send to that. It even has a builtin address converter.

That's simply Windows 10 being Windows 10... unless you pay Microsoft for the privilege of having a digital signature, it'll flag as "unknown publisher". If you want to check the authenticity... simply follow their recommended procedure for verifying the downloaded files: https://github.com/Electron-Cash/keys-n-hashes

Yes... just like you would with Electrum... "Standard Wallet". Then input your Electrum seed... it'll create a wallet and you should see a BCH balance that matches whatever BTC balance you held in Electrum at the time of the original Bitcoin Cash fork.

HCP thanks.

Do i want to leave password for my wallet keys?  Im planning to first send a tiny amount of bitcoin cash first to my nano ledger s.  Then once that goes through, i will send the rest of it.

But is it better to put a password in my case or not?  Did you do it?  I assume you sent your bitcoin cash pretty quickly after getting it from electron cash right?  I just want to do exactly what you did.  Im on the page where it ask me if i want to put a password to encrypt the keys.  Obviously with electrum I did this.  You want me to put one for electroncash here?

Set a password or don't... it doesn't make any difference if all you are going to do is immediately transfer BCH from this Electron Cash wallet to your Ledger... and then never use Electron Cash again.

Setting a password simply encrypts the sensitive information (seed, xpriv etc) within the Electron Cash wallet file... (and possibly fully encrypts the entire file if you select that option during wallet creation). Do whatever you feel most comfortable with.

Hey HCP thanks a lot!  Got the bch and then sent it to my ledger nano in a few increments just in case.  I been wanting to do this since i posted this thread.

The bitcoingold wallet you posted

https://bitcoingold.org/electrumg

That is the confirmed site for bitcoin gold right?  I went through old posts of mine and check old threads and you posted about bitcoingold.org/electrum and you posted use it at your own risk but that thread was from a while back.  Because i recalled a while back you got your bitcoin gold through another program and not this one.

Coinomi on an android was what others suggested last year i believe or when it first came out to use it.

HCP, did you use

https://bitcoingold.org/electrumg

To Claim Your Bitcoin SV?

And if so, where do you keep your bitcoin SV?  Because nano ledger s there doesn't seem to be a wallet.  So you keep it in that program you downloaded?  Or you sent it to an exchange like binance or bittrex since they have those wallets?  Of course keeping it in exchange is not good idea if you are holding.

ElectrumG is for Bitcoin Gold... NOT Bitcoin SV. Bitcoin SV is a fork from Bitcoin Cash

bitcoingold.org is the official website of Bitcoin Gold... ElectrumG is linked from there. The only reason I said "use at your own risk" is that I am not vouching for that wallet. It looks "OK", and as far as I'm aware there have been no known thefts directly attributable to that wallet, but I am not going to guarantee that it is 100% safe.

I've no idea about Bitcoin SV... as far as I can tell, there isn't even a Windows client for the official Bitcoin SV release. There are supposedly some forks of the official client that support Windows, but I am not going to vouch for or link them.

Hi, yes i know ElectrumG is for bitcoin gold.  Okay since you don't vouch for it... i will most likely stay away from that.  But what did you use specifically to get your bitcoin gold a while back then?  Was it coinomi?  So basically you have heard others say bitcoingold.org gets you bitcoin gold from other users and you have not heard anything negative out of this right.  That seems to be pretty safe then i say but for me as you know, im always paranoid.  What is your best recommendation for me to claim my bitcoin gold?  Is it coinomi?

So you had your btc in the nano ledger s when the bitcoin SV fork happened right?  So are there even ppl that claimed their bitcoin sv yet?  I mean thats a very long time since the fork came out in November?  I mean i would have thought having it in ledger... that would be easier.  But those who kept it in exchanges like coinbase, binance and bittrex were basically given it then?  Thus it would been better to keep the bitcoin cash there those days instead?  Thus we had no idea how ppl would get the bitcoin SV from it if they had it in nano ledger?  What about those with bitcoin cash in electroncash?  Is it just the same tough process?

As far as I know... ElectrumG is "fine"... like I said, no reports to my knowledge of it being a scam, but I am not going to put my reputation on the line and claim that it is definitely safe. I haven't checked the code and I haven't used it.

Quote
But what did you use specifically to get your bitcoin gold a while back then?  Was it coinomi?  So basically you have heard others say bitcoingold.org gets you bitcoin gold from other users and you have not heard anything negative out of this right.  That seems to be pretty safe then i say but for me as you know, im always paranoid.
I used the Bitcoin Gold "QT" fullnode wallet (basically, the port of Bitcoin Core -> Bitcoin Gold) and Ledger to get Bitcoin Gold.

As your bitcoins were in Electrum at the time of the fork, you're kinda stuck with using Electrum derivatives like ElectrumG if you want "the easy way" using the 12 word Electrum seed mnemonic due to Electrum seed mnemonics not being BIP39 compliant... otherwise, you'll have to identify each address/private key in Electrum that contains coins, then export those keys and then import/sweep them into another BTG wallet.

Quote
What is your best recommendation for me to claim my bitcoin gold?  Is it coinomi?
I'm not going to recommend anything... as I'm not willing to take any responsibility for anything that you do. Your "options" are:

1. use ElectrumG - quick and easy.
2. use Bitcoin Gold "full node" - you have to export all your private keys, import all your keys... then wait for the node to sync and scan your imported addresses.
3. use some other BTG compatible wallet (like Coinomi) that allows importing and/or sweeping of individual private keys.

Time to put your big boy pants on and make a decision.

Quote
So are there even ppl that claimed their bitcoin sv yet?  I mean thats a very long time since the fork came out in November?
Well of course there are... otherwise there wouldn't be any Bitcoin SV in circulation, other than those from mining Roll Eyes

Quote
I mean i would have thought having it in ledger... that would be easier.  But those who kept it in exchanges like coinbase, binance and bittrex were basically given it then?  Thus it would been better to keep the bitcoin cash there those days instead?
My understanding is that "some" exchanges offered to honour the SV fork... but not all supported it.

Ledger has chosen not to implement SV, can't say I blame them... developing/testing for every single fork ever would be a complete waste of their time... they have to make a call as to which forks are going to continue to exist and are worthwhile developing for... SV appears to have lost in the Bitcoin Cash "war"... the majority of the hashrate and value remains with Bitcoin Cash and Bitcoin SV is currently worth 1/3 of BCH.

Quote
Thus we had no idea how ppl would get the bitcoin SV from it if they had it in nano ledger?  What about those with bitcoin cash in electroncash?  Is it just the same tough process?
If you had Bitcoin Cash in a ledger, your only option for getting Bitcoin SV would be to move ALL of your coins off the current seed on the ledger to a new seed... then, using the old seed you could safely export your private keys, them import them into a Bitcoin SV wallet...

If you had Bitcoin Cash in Electron Cash, originally you would have had to export/import private keys... as the only Bitcoin SV wallet to start with was the default Linux-only client. Apparently there is now (since January) an ElectrumSV... They even have a guide for splitting SV coins using this wallet... but again, USE AT YOUR OWN RISK.

HCP as usual thanks for the detailed response.  Im going to have to think about this a bit for the bitcoin gold.

But for Bitcoin SV, are you waiting till a legit program like electroncash comes out before you do anything right?

To those who claimed Bitcoin Gold, which wallet did you use?

HCP says electrumG is recommended by many others and he hasn't heard anything negative about it but he never used it so he isn't going to say he endorses it.

So anyone else?

Also what about bitcoin SV?  What wallet do you suggest i use to claim it?  I just claimed my bitcoin cash not long ago from electron cash.  So that would mean my bitcoin cash was in electrum when the bitcoin sv fork happened.  So how do i get the bitcoin SV?

I said nothing of the sort... Roll Eyes

HCP, I have bitcoin cash in my nano ledger s.  So this is bitcoin cash abc right?  Thus if i could send the bitcoin cash to binance if i like and it would be to the bitcoin abc address on binance?  Or does it need to be split?
I just thought of this right now.  And how does one split it if i have to?  Or is this bitcoincash ... well bitcoin cash?
Bitcoin Cash = BCH

When the fork happened, you had Bitcoin Cash "ABC" and Bitcoin Cash "SV" both vying to be the "True" Bitcoin Cash... As far as I can tell, ABC won... so, BCH == "Bitcoin Cash ABC"... Bitcoin SV generally has a completely different "ticker" on the exchanges.

If you have BCH on your ledger, then it is going to be "ABC"... send it to "Bitcoin Cash ABC" on Binance

Hi HCP.  So I have Bitcoin Cash.  Wait so other exchanges like bittrex or any other exchanges, they call Bitcoin Cash... Bitcoin Cash ABC or its only binane?  I always thought because of the bitcoin fork, they just named it Bitcoin Cash and Bitcoin SV?

Okay i made a mistake with what you said about electrumg.  sorry about that.

Can anyone here endorse electrumG?  I would like to get my bitcoin gold now and claim it so i dont have to in the futre.

The thing is if i claim my bitcoin gold through say android and coinomi or through electrumg, well the danger is you expose you bitcoin wallet if you download wrong program.  But since i moved my btc to nano ledger s already and claimed my bitcoin cash from electroncash already since bitcoin was in electrum at the time of the bitcoin cash and gold fork, is there anything im exposed to?  Thus my original 12 word seed in electrum is just the bitcoin gold now?  But what about diamond and private?

Because ppl said if you claim bitcoin cash or gold, make sure you move your btc to another wallet.  Well does that mean even if some issue happens with bitcoin gold, thats all i lose?  However, there is bitcoin diamond and bitcoin private which i believe are the only 2 other legit forks besides bitcoin cash and gold and sv?  So you basically lose your bitcoin diamond and private if download incorrect wallet?

Okay well is my situation a bit different?  I kept btc in electrum at time of bitcoin cash and gold fork.  Also i kept btc in electrum at the time of bitcoin diamond and private fork if there was one.

I did not claim but bitcoin cash till recent using electroncash.  So I'm still eligible to claim bitcoin SV even though I didn't claim my bitcoin cash recently via electrum?  Because i know how you get Bitcoin SV depends on where your bitcoin cash is located.  But i never claimed my bitcoin cash before that date of the bitcoin SV fork.  So does that mean my bitcoin cash was in electroncash at the time?  What confuses me is well couldn't you claim your bitcoin cash from another wallet as oppose to electroncash if you kept btc in electrum?  Because if so, then wouldn't that mean your bitcoin cash is located in somewhere else?  Or its always located in electroncash?

Mate seriously... unless you had hundreds of BTC (and therefore hundreds of BCH)... the amount you stand to lose in Bitcoin SV/Diamond/Private if you download a "bad" wallet is probably about $1.50... Roll Eyes

Bitcoin SV is worth $83.72 per coin
Bitcoin Gold is worth $18.14 per coin
Bitcoin Diamond is worth $1.30 per coin
Bitcoin private is worth 44c per coin... and isn't even traded on any "proper" exchange. Roll Eyes

Your Bitcoin was moved from Electrum and your Bitcoin Cash was moved from ElectronCash to your Nano... so they're "safe"... Even if you gave your Electrum seed to someone, there is no chance they can get either the BTC or BCH. So, just go to the official sites... download the wallets for the coins you want... get your coins and stop panicking about everything.

Bitcoin SV wallet - https://electrumsv.io/ (linked from official BitcoinSV site here: https://bitcoinsv.io/services/wallets-and-exchanges/)
Bitcoin Gold wallet - https://bitcoingold.org/electrumg/
Bitcoin Diamond wallet - https://www.bitcoindiamond.org/download/
Bitcoin Private wallet - https://btcprivate.org/wallets

As always, get them in order of value, most valuable first... so do SV, then Gold, then Diamond, (then, if you care about the pennies... do Private).

To my knowledge... SV, Gold and Diamond wallets are perfectly safe. Private simply isn't worth worrying about unless you have thousands of coins.

Hey hcp, yes i know even if someone has my electrum seed, they can't claim my btc or bitcoin cash because they are already moved to my nano ledger s.  Yes it make sense to claim whatever is the highest value.  That is why i went with bitcoin cash first.

Then i was going to do either bitcoin gold or SV

Crypto makes me panic.  Whenever i check firmware or anything like that, im panick.  I just can't help it.

With the bitcoin gold wallet you posted, isn't it true you need to download entire blockchain which takes a long time or something like that?

Thanks.

No. Those are all links to forks of Electrum for various fork coins...
