I believe I should be given the power to temporary ban people for 3 days for not following guideline, especially after not fixing their shit after I give a nasty reply and a nasty PM.

Hear, hear! +1

kiba, I consider myself your biggest fan, and I fully support your war on the chaos and disorganization that those scumbags bring to the press section!

Where do I vote? [kiba 4 prezdent!]

Try being friendly in your PMs letting them know about the guidelines. Otherwise, just fix it and move on. Only request a ban if it gets serious.

My goal is to reduce the need to fix press thread to zero so that I literally eliminate the need for moderation.  If people aren't reading my PM or showing that they understand the guideline, then it is one more person to moderate in the future.

With a temporary ban, I can force them to learn rather than avoiding reading the thread they post in or avoiding reading PM.

Is it being used incorrectly that much?  I honestly have no idea as I hardly look in there, but how many posts per week (an average) would you say are wrong?

I don't think a global ban of any kind would be justified for violating the subboard-rules in one subboard. Temp banning from posting in this sub-board on the other hand...

Karma is a bitch. Don't forget to wear a condom. Really, not censoring. Just teaching people how to follow guidelines. I agree with OP. If guidelines not followed why have them?

NE
It makes sense to have one thread to bunch all links and date to news thread, so much cleanser and

neat.

I also want to add that it's pretty ballsy to come out and ask for the ability to be able to ban people out in the open.  It really doesn't seem necessary to ban people for using one subforum incorrectly as phantastisch said.

Gee, can we show a little less class and decency?

As for the OP, it's a lose-lose situation. I helped run a LISTSERV back in the day, and whether you're nice in pointing out rule violations or not-so-nice in pointing them out, you offend someone.

Maybe the thing to do, if possible, is simply delete the violating post to be replaced with something like

[Post deleted due to nonconformity with rules. See (link).]

Any way you do it, moderating boards like this is a thankless job. (So, thanks!)

Well, Press subboard rules are very clear, if you violate them then you just didn't read them. There are rules about the title and the post, that's all. We can discuss if a "news" is fine or not, but the rules about how to make a thread are very clear.

They aren't rules, they're guidelines. Banning is a little excessive.

How about kabi is venting a little frustration?

And, by the way, it's not censorship. Censorship is when you target something because of what it says. It's not censoring when you require people to adhere to certain rules or guidelines--if they do, they can say what they want.

Seriously, just fix the posts. Being a mod means that you're more of janitor instead of a decider, so just deal with it. If someone gives you flak and reverts the date back to the incorrect format after you've changed it, then request a temp ban. Beyond that, even if every thread was misformatted, it would take all of ten minutes to fix every thread posted in a day, if that. Don't worry, you get paid for it.

Surely it is best to just fix the date yourself, which must take seconds, and send a polite PM with a link to the guidelines. This can be a template mail which will also be quick to send. Banning is a last resort and should be used only for known scammers and spammers.

Kiba, moderating is more than scolding users for not following rules. You should fix what's wrong AND scold them, if that's your thing.
Also, please look further than the title formating, because the users cryptocoinnews and bitstop only post links to their blogs. cryptocoinnews likes to post FUD, bitstop only posts 2nd-hand articles, as in copies them from other sites.

cryptocoinnews likes to post FUD,

He's also a plagiarist. His content is entirely stolen down to the point where he doesn't even bother to remove references to the site he stole from from the article. (like "Here at the [publication x] offices we have often said..."/"[publication x] readers know by now that...")

a mod shoudnt act like this

What the fuck is this? More incorrect date formatting?

Date fixed. I need to do something against people who don't fix their own shit.

It's a mean of "education", given that people don't read the god damn press guideline.

Is that a quote? He's power tripping. Happens pretty often when one gets ones first mod position. Give it a week and he should have it out of his system. If he's still tripping after a week, he might have been the wrong choice for the position.

I think those who don't understand a clear warning in the form of a reply or a PM from moderator, should get atleast writing lock (can only write PM) for a few days. Or maybe get banned from the Press for a while.

Global mods can ban anyone, usually only used for spammers, phishers and the like. Been that way for 3 or 4 months, since the run up to 100+. Bans for other reasons are still supposed to go through theymos. Local mods can ban newbie status members only.

Ain't fixing people's shit at the press forum anymore, either as a mod or a regular user.

1. Been told that I can't say "NEED DATE FIXING" in the forum thread.

2. Been told to simply quietly correct it.

3. Not getting support to help reduce irregularity in the press forum.

4. Been told that this is only "guideline".

Did not gain much if anything from ensuring press forum is clean and threads follows the rule of that subsection except for my own satisfaction.

The site owner and mod team essentially told me that keeping the particular subsection clean is not a priority or is important to them. They won't help me reduce the number of irregularity events caused by people who don't read the guideline, don't read their own thread, and don't read private messages.

As I have better thing to do, I might as well just play minecraft and be entertained by this thread.

You won't get people to follow your guidelines with punitive action for minor infractions.
This will only lead to being seen as dictatorial, which people don't deal too well with, especially here.

Instead lead as good example, correct the false formatting and explain to users the benefit of following the guideline. This will in time lead to broader adoption of the guideline. Note I'm talking weeks here not days. People adapt slowly.

I should offer courses on this for dirty fiat money.

Wait, what? (the bolded part)
Can't talk for others, but whenever I see some problem in the Press forum I try to fix it.
In the last days I deleted/trashed lot's of spam there, sent PM's with warnings to 2 of the worst offenders and requested a ban for 1 user. And you say people won't help you? Undecided

Yep, this is it right here. I agree with what you want to do Kiba, I just don't agree with how you want to go about it. It will ultimately drive people off this forum or at the very least discourage them from posting in the press section.

Ok. I changed my mind about how I should mod(should I ever mod in the future here or else where), but I am not visiting the press forum or bitcointalk anymore.

Well, let just say I respectively disagree with how moderation should be done.

Ok. I changed my mind about how I should mod(should I ever mod in the future here or else where), but I am not visiting the press forum or bitcointalk anymore.

Well, let just say I respectively disagree with how moderation should be done.

I have read all the thread and come to the conclusion you're 12, is that right kiba?

Edit: Disregarding that I really hate the US date format, I actually think you do a great job and should keep it up. Follow example of fellow moderators like gayhawk or psy and you can safely ignore badbear  Grin. I PMd theymos to restore your mod for the News sub-forum, let's hope now.

Simple fixes are better than power abuses. Just make it so that when posting in Press, the first 10 characters are checked for ####-##-## format (simple regex will do). I can do this if theymos doesn't have the time.
