So I am finally diving into the world of crypto and really confused as to how to initially purchase Ethereum with US dollars?

My goal is to trade Ethereum for Paragon Coin (PRG) on hitbtc.com or Livecoin.com (currently the only 2 exchanges Paragon Coin is listed on)

Do I have to first buy Bitcoin and then trade it for Ethereum and then trade that for Paragon Coin?  Where would Ether (GAS) fall into this? Do I need to buy Ether to buy Ethereum?

So where/how do I go about quickly & easily buying ETH so I can trade it for PRG?

I would like to do a test purchase of $2 just so I understand the process before depositing any larger amounts.  But can I even buy ETH with that low amount?  Or do bank wire fees kill that deal?

Please help a NEWB navigate these weird waters.

I have created a wallet with MyEtherWallet.com & also have a ParagonCoin.com account that seems to also have generated it's own wallet address.  I have also created an account on Livecoin.com & hitbtc.com.  But I'm still totally confused how I load/deposit money onto the exchanges initially.  And I don't want to want 3-7 business days for wire or verification of some kind.

Can someone help clear up this process for me and expedite my purchase of Ethereum so I can get started trading for other cryptos?

Thanks.

I jumped on coinbase.com - seems to have been the easiest/fastest way to get the ball rolling.  A few more fees upfront than some other places probably, but still very reasonable.

By the way, you can buy ether for cash using Dether dapp. Installing the dapp on your smartphone you'll see on the map of your city people who sell ether. You can choose the right offer, meet with the seller and make a deal. Over time, Dether developers will add other coins, including bitcoin.

Coinbase is easiest but as you figured out has the highest fees. Kraken has lower fees but their interface isn't good. Bitstamp has good interface but the process isn't as quick especially if using larger amounts. All have their drawbacks but all have their perks as well. Pick your poison so to speak Roll Eyes

This sounds really awesome - I'm going to look into this now.  Thanks for that.

I'm still confused as to what ether is to Ethererum.  I realize it's the "Fuel" but I don't understand what the point of "fuel" is since bitcoin doesn't have it and I know you can purchase ether like ethereum also, but is it something that has a value that will also go up?

Good points on all of that.  I love coinbase.com & the dashboard look & feel.  I also love how fast & easy it was to purchase and feel it's worth the extra few dollars in fees.  (at least for now) I will look into others to see how they fare as I get deeper into this.  I'm currently also on hitbtc.com so I could buy paragon coin.

What is the difference between coinbase.com & hitbtc.com?  I understand hitbtc.com as a peer-peer exchange that allows me to trade for other coins.  But coinbase only allows me to purchase, so it's not an exchange?

There are a lot of exchanges that you can purchase Ethereum direct with your usd using visa/credit card, or bank transfers. For example EXMO exchange and CEX.io

Thanks for that info.  I'll look into them and try to buy some more ethereum right now since coinbase has disabled it and litecoin lol

Also, I can't seem to find the dether app in the app store on iphone?
