So what are the main differences between Tradehill vs. Mt.Gox?  What are the advantages and disadvantages to each one?  U.S. based users please.

Tradehill is more transparent with their fee's, Mtgox has more volume of bitcoins on it. I think the best way to go about these two sites is to just sell/buy at the one with better prices at the time.

0.54% commission per transaction with TradeHill, versus 0.65% commission with MtGox
MtGox has bigger volume, but maybe TradeHill is catching up...
For 0.54% commission you need a referral code, mine is TH-R15371 Smiley

What about things like dependability? Is one more secure than the other?

Both of them claim to have taken measures that improve security after the MtGox hack, but we cannot know for sure, i.e. if there are still some security holes then your money isn't safe, unless you withdraw BTC from their central server to you bitcoin wallet (BTC withdrawls are free, and once the bitcoins arrive to your address, you're safe).
The TradeHill security update is here: http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=24802.0
You can also watch interviews with the people who run TradeHill and MtGox on the bitcoin show on youtube (episodes 008 and 011).
