For a portfolio in excess of USD 150,000

> moderate risk appetite (by crypto standards)
> don't want to just put it in btc and have it maybe double
> don't want to spread too thin on tiny, speculative alts. Pure gambling, IMO, and also usually means risk of loss/exchange problems/so many different wallets, etc.
> Have lost significant money on ~15 then-popular altcoins in 2013 so slightly wary
> yes, can afford to lose it all Wink

Current split:

BTC - 70%
LTC - 11%
IOTA - 10%
BCH - 6%
ONION - 2%
BTG - 1%
ENJ- 1%

You split looks great but why you havent bought Ethereum? You should think about adding it to your portfolio, its definitly a coin that will pump with Bitcoin in long term!

30% BTC,
30-50% DASH, ETH, NEO, LTC
20% ICOs
0-20% Shits like emc2.

If you want put just one egg into basket, and try luck for new year my bet is.... NEO (You can earn GAS too if you holding them into a wallet).

Good portfolio but it seems you don't love risk because it is not a moderate risk portfolio but I am not sure about this as well, since we might be faced with a market rising to $1 tln

I would spread it in this way:
50% in bitcoin
40% in solid and consolidated cryptocurrencies like ethereum, dash, monero
5% in altcoin, where you can make a short term investment and also do trading if you are able to
5% in ICO (I personally suggest you to follow the ICO that will be done from the Gilgamesh project, I think that this project can have a bright future and can bring a lots of advantages to the industry where they are trying to innovate)

I like your distribution and that your portfolio has 70% allocation to bitcoin. In my personal opinion there are better options available than Onion. It will be better if you can add ethereum. There are plenty of good projects running on ethereum platform and it is here to stay.

BTW your distribution comes out at 101% based on your allocation.

What do you recommend, % bitcoin? if I drop to 50% that gives me about $40,000 to put into other stuff. Which coins do you count under encryption services?

I think NVST would be a good bet as well. The dividends would really pay off if their DEX becomes popular.

Why didn't you include DASH? Do you think it will crash and burn? Because that one has been rising a lot lately. Same for Ripple by the way.

So basically I had BTC and LTC from years ago. BCH and BTG I got from the forks. The others I just bought on a whim, essentially. I struggle to keep up with the crypto world and am slow on the uptake with what is "hot right now". I haven't intentionally excluded any coins, specifically.

Dash, ripple... maybe I should just spread around top 10 market cap coins. I really don't believe anyone can genuinely predict the success of most of the others, they all pump and dump and you have to be there at the right time, I guess. People don't tend to post about their bad trades.

I do have the capital to go deep in some ICOs, though. I guess then dumping immediately when they hit an exchange?

For a portfolio in excess of USD 150,000 [...]
moderate risk appetite (by crypto standards) [...]
yes, can afford to lose it all Wink

I've picked these three parts from your post. #1 I think is less relevant than #2 and #3, but then #2 itself makes #3 irrelevant... so the only thing that is important regarding advice is moderate risk...
In that case I would advise a similar strategy to the one I'm following:

- a good proportion in BTC,
- a good proportion in top alts (I have ETH, XRP, NEM, NEO, and lately Cardano; missed the IOTA train but hoping to catch it later when the price against BTC is better)
- the rest in your favourite lower cap coins.

And then add to this some 'moderate risk' trading if you wish, betting small amounts on daily fluctuations or larger (but still cautious) amounts on more reliable longer-term trends.

I would have distributed everything like this
60% in Bitcoin
25% in ETH, NEO, LTC, DASH, IOTA, WAVES
10% in other crypto-currency coins, for trading on the exchange
5% in ICO

Dont pay attention to this guy if you do not want to lose your funds because of him.

bitbay blocknet byteball

You have a nice portfolio at the moment, the 70% in bitcoin is perfect, but the ten percent in IOTA is the only thing that i have not liked about it.

Why dont you put that money on Monero? In a few months it will be much more profitable than hold this kind of coin that is useless.

And onions? Why are you going to buy something that you can earn for free?

of course you can divide your money into several projects. But if you invest in one worthy project like Eth, Stratis, Neo, ltc - then you can earn a lot more  Wink

Congratz if you have BTC and LTC from years ago :-)

It's true what you say. Nothing can be predicted with 100% certainty. But that's true for the top 10 market cap coins as well.
With obscure and new coins, the biggest short term profits or losses can be generated. With the bigger coins you can see jumps as well, but they're more a long term investment.

I would put far less iota and on both in the portfolio. I would add bytebsll, bancor and waves. And perhaps a few among zcash, set and similar.

No ETH?
Well I always prefer not to put all eggs in one basket but this one is pretty accurate, 70% BTC means you have minimized the risk of your total investment but it will be more better if you split 10% from BTC into ETH means 60% with BTC and 10% ETH. I think LTC percentage should be at least 15% because there is high potential in LTC as compared to others, IOTA percentage should be more less and that of BCH should be increased about 4-5%. My suggested portfolio is
70% BTC or 60% BTC and 10% ETH
15% LTC
10% BCH
5% Others

It’s surprising to see a portfolio of that size, and no Ethereum.  Why are you avoiding it?  It kind of pays divedends in that you’ll get some ERC airdrops.

I have no vested interest in any coins other than what I've personally placed my bets on, started this crypto journey in late September, spent the month of October trading, buying a bunch of coins at their ATH, panic selling, etc etc....long story short I've also made some very good bets and my initial investment which was reasonably sizeable has gone 4 X since Nov 1st. So take this advice as what I'm personally invested in, in the hopes of being mortgage free in a few years. I don't currently hold BTC, depending on my feelings reading charts I'll hold BTC briefly to improve my positions, for example selling SONM yesterday at 1500 and buying back in 7 hours later for 1172. Once I've reached my targets for each coin I'll trade into BTC.

My guess is this will greatly outpace Bitcoin. It's not as risky as buying a single coin but doesn't spread you too thin.

40% Split Litecoin, Ripple, Etherium
30%Ark Stratis, Factom(or waves,neo,Nem)
20% Bitbay,PoSW, XtraBytes
10% Anything Else

Etherium and Litecoin-  just because the are on coinbase(and good development).
Ripple- I follow closely and there is much much more good going on with it then people here will lead you to believe.

My favorite sub 1 billion coins are - Ark,Stratis,Factom.  You can't go wrong with platform coins and factom has a great use case.

Favorite sub 100mil coins- Bitbay,POSW, XtraBytes

Please add all the blockchain platform coins to your portfolio like NEM, NXT, Cardano, Waves, Ethereum, Stratis, Universa, Lisk, NEO and Neblio.
Also Cryptocurrency mining coins like  Electroneum, Minexcoin, Monero, and utility coins like Omisego, Genesis Vision, Cartaxi, and Worldcore.

Not avoiding it, just never bought it. IOTA is really the only alt I've intentionally bought, recently. I am paralysed by indecision.

I personally would throw away iota and bch from that bag and would add monero. I think it has better developers and a better chance of succeeding even more in the future.

Onion is also a pretty strange choice. Could you explain  why you bought it?

Basically just recommended on a whim by a friend, I wanted to get in on the airdrops which were pretty valuable at the time, hundreds of $ per week worth. But then I wasn't able to, still waiting for this forum account to mature, etc. etc. Could trade it for something else, I guess. I am at a slight profit with it. Same with IOTA, just a couple of grand up on that at the moment.

Your portfolio is not a risky and stable set of coins. Perhaps this makes sense, since my wallet contains 25% of risky projects. In your wallet there is no ethereum and there is no NEO, WAVES, DASH. I would add them. Since this is a very good investment.

Things have changed a bit since this first post, I've tried to chase some pumps and it hasn't really worked out. I need to sort out a portfolio and stick to it, and get back to my life! It's just so tempting seeing 10x pumps, and with me already at this good level of funding, thinking of what I could make! Hmm

Currently at:

BCH: 45% (safe bet)
BTC: 22% (safe bet)
ETH: 13% (safe bet)
XRP: 9% (small loss at the moment but probably safe)
ONION: 2% (20% profit)
ENJ: 2% (from ICO, 3x profit)
ENG: 2% (holding bags)
BTG: 1% (free from the fork)

I am thinking to just do something like
60% BTC/BCH/LTC/ETH
30% mixture of top-20 coins I like
10% (i.e. about 1BTC) random small coins or ICOs

I gave the below suggestion to someone seeking ideas for 100K $.

Hi there,
1st of Good luck and God Speed.
Then buy 2 or 3 Hardware wallets and make sure you safe guard your investments. (Ledger Nano S &/ Trezor)

My suggestions (or My investments if I had that much would be...)

Buy 1 BTC and HODL, like forever..
Buy 25 ETH and HODL, like forever..

now ~40K $ invested, lets go for Alt coins. Includes both short term & Long term.
Sell 50% when each one turns 2x, so that your investment is returned and what ever you HODL will be your profits

Ripple - 5k $
IOTA - 5k $
XPSEC - 5K $
PASC - 5k $
Verge - 5K $
NAV coin - 5K $
DigiBytes - 5K $
BURST - 5K $
Po.ET - 5k $
RaiBlocks - 5K $
Dent - 5K $
FunFair - 5k $

Research well & choose what you like and increase / decrease amount as you fit.

Also try to keep a watch for a good ICO.

I wouldn't put 150k into any Altcoin.
Definitely 99% into BTC and 1% for Altcoin
May be 15k into top 100 coins?

I will increase a loot the altcoin quota (like onion should be much more than 2%). Putting 70 % in BTC I think is too risky... You can maybe expect a double in the price, but how long you have to wait for just 2x ?!?!
