They are funding target of an ico, softcap is the minimum funding goal set by developer of ico while hardcap is the maximum funding goal set which no fund will be received after it is reached.

I've noticed several ICO's reaching their softcap well before presale or crowdsale, usually by having private investors on board that buy a small portion (compared to the presale and crowdsale number) for a low price, still earning a few million $. Not many actually rely on reaching their softcap nowadays or so it seems.

Alarming is the amount of ICO's telling people when they didn't reach their hardcap (or barely reached their softcap) that they will keep tokens for a 2nd round later....

Low capped projects often offer the best opportunity to go x5 or better. High capped projects have the benefit of immediately getting enough funding (once reached or near) to be able to buy into exchanges like Binance.

That is why It is so important to see how much is their soft and hard cap since it is so important to be involved in the ICO that we want to invest at so that the success of the ICO is also our success.

When an ICO(Initial Coin offering) is announced, the coin decided by the project team is sold as an investment. And out of the total budjet that is required for the company to go ahead with the project, they are supposed to attain a certain investment levels. This is nothing but funds. The minimum amount that is required is a SOFTCAP and the maximum amount that is enough is a HARDCAP.

Its some made up point, especially the "hard cap". Soft cap i can see that some may need, but no way the majority of ICOs need it. Low amount of money just means longer development time. Its bullshit.

Is there a cryptosite that provides information on hard/soft caps?

Soft cap is the minimum amount of investment required to finance the project. Hard cap is the maximum amount that management can effectively use.

These are fundraising goals. Soft cap is the lower limit, the minimal amount required for the project to be considered. If the project does not reach its soft cap, the team will return the funds. On the other hand, hard cap is the maximum amount a crowdsale will receive.

Hmm, interesting. Is that true if the project does not reach its soft cap, the team will return the funds?
Because the fact which I've experienced it was not like that. I join ATFS ICO and the project not reached soft cap. But the team still continue the project and hit the coinexchange.io exchanges
No refund plan and the investors still disappointed about the ATFS progress.

As interest and money volume increase in crypto currency units, ico numbers also increase. these icolar have the softcap and hardcap values they set at the time of sale. Those who reach hardcap value are successful.

Hard Cap and Soft Cap are extremely important in determining whether to invest in an ICO or not.

Ico's that have no soft cap because they are a business that is already successful or have secured private funding is a good sign.

Also, low hard caps are good too because it will create more demand for the token.

The biggest red flag for an ICO is if the hard cap is really high.  Anything that is 30 million or above is high.  I know that it is normal for icos to have 30 million hardcaps, but that is still ridiculously high.
Last year, there were icos that were trying to collect 50 to 70 million dollars...thats crazy!

In the normal startup world, even in silicon valley, tech startups receiving 1 to 5 million dollars in funding was considered amazing and enough to operate the business for over a year.  So why is it that these companies need 30 million dollars?

But, thankfully, since the last three months, there have been more and more icos that have been lowering their hard caps.

Low hardcap + hype = quick profit.

soft cap is the amount of minimum investor funds collected and hard hats is the maximum amount of investor funds, the funds will be used to develop the project ideas and run their plan according to the roadmap.
when only soft cap or hard cap is achieved in an ICO they will continue to pursue the idea of the project but it would be great if the hard cap is achieved because it will invite many investors who want to buy the coins in exchange.

Soft cap is the minimum amount of project needed to be able to execute the plan according to the roadmap. Having a hard cap means the project has successfully completed its ICO campaign. Hardcap also shows the scale of the project. If the project has a small hard cap then the return on investment will likely be higher. I like the project with Hardcap from 10 million $ - 20 million $.

What is the difference of hard cap to soft cap? Did we base on this if we are going to invest in altcoins? Share your comments.
yes, we should base on this to decide investment if you know nothing or don't understand about these industry so you can follow other.
people only invest on the good one, so if a project can reach hardcap you can put some if still have chance.

Soft cap is the minimum amount funding that the IcO was aiming it means if the Ico reach that soft cap sale we can already say that they are supposed to begin their project with that amount and the hard cap or maximum funding is for more expenses to the project. Some icos that hits the hardcap is a proof that an ico is too good to invest and there is a lot of expectations from it.

True softcap is the minimum and hardcap is the maximum. You should be really carefully with the project that has very high hard cap. What kind of project are they, value proposition and why they need that amount of money - these things are important to consider.

It depends on campaign. Sometimes it can be not softcap, nor hardcap, but goal of the current stage of token sale for example.

I would not focus on companies that want to build a very small softcap. For example, the company GYM which starts with a minimum collection of 10 ETH, and the maximum to infinity. I believe that such projects simply can not be started. After all, even a shortage of wages for employees to develop a platform.

Both of these caps are just to make people are attracted toward coming forward to invest with ICOs. They are like some milestone in terms of how much capital so far made. If some people are waiting till the soft cap achieved, then definitely they will start investing once devs announce soft cap is done. Because achieving soft cap must be their way of identifying a good potential ICO.

Hard cap must be the end of ICO, most of the times still there are devs to continue the ICO by altering hard cap to next big levels. Anyway these are some of explicit criteria we need to consider to measure how successful an ICO and not definitely a measurements for potential of ICOs.
