I'd like to use this post to talk a little about the history of GameCoin, from it's beginnings to where we're at now. GameCoin was originally launched on May 12th 2013 under the GMC ticker by a developer using the username gamecoin. Unfortunately this launch was botched due to the developer using the exact same genesis block from Feathercoin or LiteCoin (I can't recall which off hand). This resulted in a successful 51% attack replacing the legitimately mined blockchain with that from the other coin. The original developer did resolve this situation by adding some initial checkpoints and releasing an updated client but the damage had already been done. The difficulty was stuck above 1.0 and most of the miners abandoned it as a lost cause making the hash rates plummet. I had personally mined about 100 blocks legitimately so I was reluctant to give up on it, the same was true for a few other miners so we worked together to mine at what was for us (solo mining) a high difficulty. Somewhere along the line tyrion70 set up a pool so we were able to work together to bring the difficulty down after a few weeks of mining. During this time we all came to the conclusion that having difficulty retargets at 2016 blocks apart is not necessarily a good thing. We'd all experienced just how damaging this can be as we had to mine at too high a difficulty for the size of the network for several weeks. jayo89 had already made some cosmetic changes and started a new repository and I took it upon myself to improve the difficulty algorithm based upon changes made to MinCoin at around the same time as this. tyrion70 once again stepped in to compile some updated wallets. The hard fork for this difficulty algorithm came into force at block 25200 and as I type this there are 48695 blocks so the network has been ticking along nicely ever since this point. The only real issue has been the peers with 300K blocks just don't seem to want to give up the ghost resulting in the client displaying that it is trying to sync with them. This is merely an annoyance and does not impact the functionality of the wallet due to the many checkpoints keeping everyone on the correct chain. UPDATE: GameCoin v0.8.1 should resolve the issue with bad peers once the deadline for upgrading (August 15th 2013 at 00:00:00 (GMT)) is reached. That pretty much brings us up to date, if you mined in the early days of GameCoin and kept your wallet.dat file your coins should still exist. All you need to do is update to the latest client version and you'll be good to go.

Very nice update, and nice to see a new thread. I've been watching this coin with the corner of my eye, sticking with updates and occasional mining if/when the hash dropped over the past couple months.
Shame there is the still existing visual sync issue. For anyone that has their client say "out of sync" and requires something like 350k more blocks to be downloaded. Just ignore it. It's a residing effect from the previously mentioned initial attack on the coin. The client is able to see the unofficial blocks but it will not download them due to checkpoints. Because of this you will end up with a visual discrepancy saying that your wallet is out of sync, all the while it is synced and fully functional.

I was really hoping the change to the IRC channel would resolve this but I guess it's just not sufficient to just change the channel. Although the rogue peers are not connecting to it we are all connecting to each other and telling each other about clients we know about, such is the nature of p2p. I'm going to have to look more closely at the code and see if I can get it to automatically add a banscore of 100 to clients not named as "GameCoin" going forward. As ruecanonrails points out it's merely an annoyance to see your client trying to sync. Your wallet will not download anything other than the official blockchain, at least up to the last block that has a checkpoint (48,500).

I see a bright future here, please contact the Steam team, since they have open sourced with Linux, perhaps they can go a bit further by accepting GME as payment and even encourage developers to allow GME generation and use in-game.

I'd like to thank ahmed for the pool, Sondey10mg for supporting the faucet and everyone else for helping to raise awareness in GameCoin. For too long have so few dedicated miners being supporting what everyone else saw as a dead coin, not worth any attention. it's nice to see new people taking an interest.

I think I speak for our whole (little) community if I say thank you to you. You're spending much time on this coin and you are the one bringing it back to life now. If we all try to do a small piece of the work, this coin might take off

Are any of you Gamecoin people actually interested enough in games to join in a game and try to establish Gamecoin in the game as a viable currency?
Basically get established in the game, maybe form a clan, build up in-game resources, and start offering to sell those resources / items / etc for Gamecoin?
Most coins no-one bothered to do this with, the main exception that comes to mind being Ixcoin, I recall a character named Ix running around in-game as a trader, offering to buy and sell stuff for Ixcoins.
Maybe a bunch of Gamecoin people could even form a clan and work together so they could build up resources and items and so on more efficiently than people who do not work together as co-ordinated teams and thus be able to offer better prices than competing traders?

Good idea. I could do this in Guild wars 2 and Rift. Some others playing these games?
