Whining noise from S9 fan?

My S9 fan has a strange whining/whistling noise. Is it normal or is it just my unit? The temperature of each hashing board it well under 75c but my fan ramps up a lot quite often. Any suggestions? Thanks!

How old is it? Could be one of the fan bearings.

I wouldn't be too worried about it as long as it is getting the right hash rate. Can try ordering a replacement fan to get rid of the extra fan noise if it bothers you.

Your 3 boards are working, you are luckier than me. The difference in RPM between the two fans is bigger that what I've seen, but it may be normal. These things are loud in general, I also thought there was something wrong with my fans when I first set it up...

ok, so here's the thing. I saw a post somewhere (reddit or bitcointalk) where someone had mentioned that it's due to a much slower intake fan that the miner makes the whistling sound. Then they talked about replacing the fan with a faster/silent model which reduced the whistling effect. Has anyone else seen this post? or if you can recommend me the fan I can upgrade to?

Under 80C chip temp is gold. 
Under 40 means it's not hashing!!

One of my new S9s also has a whirling fan. Aside from the noise, I dont see any other issues with it. RPM is normal.

you should really try to get temps down. they are supposed to operate under 40C

The s9 can run over 100c.

The fan noise is normal, its an industrial miner not meant for home use. Changing the fan will cause nothing but problems.

The conversation drifted towards another issue that I'm not primarily concerned about. It's not the noise but the uneven nature of the sound which is bothering me. My mistake, let me add more to it. The fan is constantly ramping up and down with a strange whistling noise that my D3 units don't make. I also have some more information to add to it which might help. I found out when is the fan making the noise.

You see 3 'yellow' columns which signify the duration for which my S9 was rented on miningrigsrental.com

From the right, the highly fluctuating hashrate graph is when the S9 is being noisy. At this point, all the hashborads are under 78c. During the rented duration when you don't see the fluctuation in the graph, the S9 is running smoothly.

There's nothing I'm doing from my end that might cause this uneven hashrate.

I was dealing with the same issue. I just got 4 S9's . 3 have the shit fan( not YLD12BM-12D)(just ordered 3 others from aliexpress https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Cooling-Fan-Replacement-D12BM-12D-4-pin-Connector-PWM-12038-12v-2-3A-6000RPM-For-Antminer/32850164857.html) and whine constantly. It is a piercing wail that gets in your brain and doesn't leave, building and building until you think your head will explode.

I found a solution. Reduce fan speed to 75% or somewhere in that range (3360/4920) current temps 82/74/76

I had a whistler once and I solved the issue by unscrewing the exhaust fan a bit and jamming a tiny piece of plastic in the crack to hold everything tight and leave a little space where air could come in.  That reduced the pressure on the intake fan and stopped the whistling.  Probably not the most ideal situation, but it was a tiny crack and didn't seem to effect temperatures much.

I've also found that adjusting the torque on the fan screws can help some.

If your willing to replace them every few weeks, Lowes sells thin poly heating duct register filters in something like a 12 pack.  Ripped in half, they are just about perfect for sitting over the intake grill and will greatly change the tone of your fans.  I only used them on my high pitched whistlers , since I found that noise the most annoying.  You will get a few degree bump in operating temp if you use them - but that generally beats a headache from the sound.

I'll have to try this, I have a wailer as well. I took a piece of tape and put on the front fan after holding a couple fingers to the grill on various places to fin where the air flow seems to "sing" the most. You say a few degrees temp increase, what have you noticed specifically since summer is coming?

Everything remained well in spec with the Lowes filter in front, but that is of course, VERY dependent on your intake air temps.

Usually seeing around 30-40 C intake depending if shop door is open or closed atm. Thinking summer I should expected 40-50 deg intake on HOT days. Usually I'll power down anyway if I cant cycle enough cooler air in as my cooling is only moderate. Once I chip away at ROI my cooling refinement is high priority but in US NW area heat isn't much of an issue outside of a week or two a year of scattered days.

Have you tried the filters on any 741, 821's from Canaan? They can whistle to although I find it more bearable than the s9 at max fan speeds.

Unfortunately only have experience with S3s, S4s, S7s, and S9s.  Thinking about dipping into 841s, but that is a different thread.

High-backpressure-tolerant many-blade fan designs are notorious for their high-pitched "whine" when running at high RPMs.

It's PROBABLY normal.
